We thought we would try Italian cuisine for a change, but Osteria was disappointing. It does have a very good and inexpensive wine list - we had the '08 Nero D'Avola, which was excellent - the coffee is first rate and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The pasta dishes, however, were very ordinary and the dessert options extremely limited.

Located in a little lane in the Kastro area, we took the effort to find this place given its strong reviews on TA and LonelyPlanet. The restaurant has a little courtyard and terrific food, with a menu which changes daily (a few vegetarian options as well!). This is one of the few restaurants in Greece that served us bread without charging for it! The food was delicious, and freshly prepared by the mamma of the family (Dolly). At the end of the meal, they gave us wonderful cherries and maps with bookmarks as well! Dolly also came by to greet and thank us when we left, after a wholesome and friendly meal in a home-like setting.

We asked the advice of a Greek shop owner where to eat in the Port of Naxos. Interestingly she advised against Greek food, despite the fact that Naxos island grows amazing produce. She was of the opinion that all the good produce was exported and the dregs left behind for the restaurants. Sound familiar? We took her advice and went to the Italian L' Osteria wine bar restaurant. A great find, with us sharing a wonderful green salad loaded with strawberry, other fruits and lots of pine nuts - delicious! We both ordered the fresh prawn linguini - absolutely the best pasta yet!

The restaurant itself is small, cosy, and beautifully decorated with full size paintings of leafy trees on a background of white. Green tablecloths with wine glasses and candles set just the right ambience. Timbers across the roof are draped with white hanging fabric.

The staff were pleasant, attentive and helpful. Even the chef came out after our meal to ensure that we were satisfied. The menu was limited, and in my opinion a good thing. You are sure to have a memorable meal here, but beware. You will likely need reservations in busy months.
