“Small, very small”
Reviewed 15 October 2007

Have just returned from Naxos and it is still hot and sunny enough to swim every day in the sea. The journey is ok, Flight to Mykonos, 2 hour wait at the harbour but you can leave your bags and walk into the town (5 mins) for lunch. Sunny Beach studios are in a quite location a few minutes from a lovely beach, but the room was very small. We booked a late holiday in a 2/3 person studio, (room 30). The room was really only meant for 2 single beds but they had squashed in another full size single. Great pillows and comfy beds. The bathroom is tiny, you sit on the loo with one foot in the shower tray, the shower curtain was hanging on only 4 hooks and useless and we managed to flood the bathroom every day. But plenty of hot water and good pressure and plugs for the sink. No mop for drying the floor, or bath mat. So you had to remember to put your shoes on for every visit, even in the night. Don't even consider cooking in the kitchette apart from tea or coffee, there is no area to prepare anything, plates and bowls are plastic and not enough cutlery.
The rooms were cleaned bedding and towels changed every day , we never saw the cleaners, owner or our rep all week(this didn't bother us) Location is great, beach is sandy and very quiet, theres a small bay at one end for sailing and windsurfing, short walk into town where there are some great eating places especially in the old town.
Naxos is great, you should go but if you want room to move don't choose the Sunny Beach studios.

This must be our fifth stay in Naxos so far, and our fourth at Sunny Beach apartments.

Very handily situated close behind the quieter end of St. George Beach, (behind the Flisvos water sports centre) the Sunny Beach apartments are in a two small blocks which surround a small circular swimming pool. From the road, the apartments look like a private villa - and to be honest once you are there, it feels like one too. Not in the decoration, which is standard greek style (nothing to write home about), but by the fact that it is so close to a lovely part of the beach, that most other guests don't hang around the pool very much - so it often feels like it is just yours.

The rooms are cleaned every day, (except Sundays) fresh bedding and towels every day, and the lovely cleaner isn't banging on your door at 9:15 - they seem to be aware of when you have left the room somehow. Its a clever trick because there is no one in residence at the apartments. When you first arrive you are given your room number by your representative - the key is in the door, and thats it basically. If you need help you can either call your rep (or see him at the meetings) or nip over to the hotel across the road and see Katrina who is far more helpful.

There is a small area that I suppose you could call a reception, where the tour rep boards are, and also various books, magazines and items such as lilos, brollies etc., are left by nice guests who have left, but didn't want to take them with them on the plane.

The pool is checked regularly for chlorine levels etc., - we saw both the local guy, and our rep do it a number of times. There are also plastic loungers around the pool - about six - but enough considering hardly anyone spends time at the pool.

The rooms are average size, some seem to have had a bit of a white wash recently, most have a hairdryer, and some have a television. However ours didn't have a lead, so we didn't get to watch anything (not that we would have of course). We had a small clock radio, which worked fine and we picked up some quaint local music, which was nice occasionally.

All rooms have airconditioning, but you do have to pay an extra 5Euros per day for this - which seems quite steep, especially as in some rooms it doesn't seem to work very well.

You could also be sneaky and use a neighbours remote control, and split the cost of the a/c which makes it cheaper of course. There are no fans in the room, so I would say you do need this.

There is a small bathroom with loo, shower, and sink, and as usual the shower is a hand-held contraption and water sprays everywhere. But the water was always hot, and the shower was a good strength.

Some rooms have a double bed, and some have twin beds, which they will push together for you. The beds are very hard though to be honest - not terribly comfy. Small bedside tables at either side, lights for reading, and above the mirror and centre of the room and plenty of plug sockets - all in useful places i.e. near the mirror/seating area. There is a good size double wardrobe, with extra blankets, and pillows, plenty of different types of coathangers, and enough storage space for a couple of weeks I reckon.

A little balcony on each room with plastic chairs and metal table, and either views of the surrounding countryside or the pool area.

In terms of situation, i find it really ideal. Far enough away from the town but not too far to walk, (10 to 15 minutes with plenty of tavernas enroute) and within 2 minutes walk to the beach. It is a five minute walk to the bus stop where you can buy tickets opposite in the bakery (yum) to get to the beautiful Plaka beach area, and only a bit more up the hill to get to a superb clean and well stocked supermarket, and also the good fun open air cinema (don't forget to take your own beer ) which is opposite the supermarket. You don't hear this by the way when you are at Sunny Beach - the wind must blow in the opposite direction.

If you need it (which I hope you wouldn't) the police station is about 10minutes walk away) and you can get into town easily by either strolling leisurly along the beach (whilst catching the sunset with cocktails at Trata Bar on the beach) , or going the back way and up via the main streets.

Whilst Naxos Town has something for everyone including good shopping, great little stylish bars (try Naxos Cafe or the Ouzo bar)
fab tavernas to suit all tastes etc., you must really try to get a quad or a car and tour the island. Its not difficult, and once you get out of the main town (which takes about a second) the roads are quiet, well signposted and the views are amazing. Lots of little villages en-route, and loads of things to see. There are free road maps everywhere - so grab the chance - its worth having a quad for atleast three days.
If you have any questions, I am more than happy to answer them about Sunny Beach or about Naxos.
