“The best view in Italy?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2012

Way up in the mountains, this hotel in Scala is a little gem! just under 2 hours drive from Naples airport.A quirky up and down hotel with beautiful views of Ravello from every room and dining terraces. Our room was very nice, twin beds pushed together, wardrobe, desk, big comfy chair, fridge and tv but only Italian channels with occasional English dialogue.Nice roomy bathroom with bidet, shower w.c and sink, lovely white soft towels. Good sized balcony with table and chairs. The only thing missing was a chest of drawers!, we had to make piles of clothes in the wardrobe. Bedroom cleaned daily. No air conditioning but we didnt feel uncomfortable and it was very hot - mid August, the shutters did their job.Very quiet at night, we didn't hear anything except sometimes fireworks from the local fiestas. Breakfast was minimal, croisants, yoghurt, cheese slices, coffee, corn flakes and juice but adequate. Dinner was all freshly cooked, from 2 choices you chose at breakfast time. A pasta dish followed by meat or fish and desert, all very nice and served by the very friendly Antonio, reasonably priced wine and beers. Not much to do after evening meal, the terrace bar downstairs not open when we were there. The swimming pool was nice and had very useful changing rooms/toilets, but it was used by locals so you couldn't always get a sunlounger. There are buses to get you around, quite cheap,to Ravello,Amalfi and further afield. You buy the tickets at the Tabac in Scala village. The view is the best I've had in Italy,You look over the Ravine to Ravello, you feel you could reach out and touch the church there! just beautiful.

In my opinion z'intonio is a guesthouse rather than hotel with all the limitations this implies. Neither is it quiet - doors slam until the early morning, passing traffic can clearly be heard echoing from the valley and, worryingly, local Italians do not care for their dogs, leaving them outside barking constantly all night which is extremely upsetting. Bathroom walls between rooms are very thin, every visit can clearly be heard from next door - MOST EMBARRASSING -you may be woken during the late hours/early morning because of this.

Meals are not 3 star standard and certainly not representative of any Italian meals I've had in the past. The fruit is often past its best and desserts are small, sometimes repeated, and ice cream provided is the cheapest type. Breakfasts are adequate, but rolls are often stale.

The hotel appears to be run on a tight budget with the staff's convenience seemingly more important that the guests, hence the use of the smaller dining room and veranda rather than the more pleasant larger dining room which is further from the kitchen.

Dinner is strictly 7.30 pm. Your day is therefore curtailed as you need to get back to freshen up beforehand. There is then no bar facility or even anywhere attractive to sit and relax for the remainder of the evening.

The simplest of requests can cause extreme problems and even rudeness.

Scala itself is a quiet but very small village, pleasant, but not particularly charismatic.I doubt you would wish to spend a whole evening there. It is the sort of place you could pass through and then forget.

Beautiful views and surroundings, clean rooms, but not a holiday I will repeat.I'm afraid.

I found some of the reviews of Zi'ntonio a bit flattering, folowing our recent holiday. There are several good things to be sure: it's a friendly, genuine sort of place with a great outlook over Ravello. The breakfasts are more than adequate and dinner is freshly cooked and tasty. Staff are helpful and accommodating too. However, rooms are basic and would certainly benefit from air conditioning. A creaky awning and shutters struggled to deal with the August heat and consequently the rooms were hotter than outside at night-time. Also be aware that the swimming pool, whilst clean and cool is, in effect, a public pool with non-residents including noisy teenagers and families (reserving sunloungers with towels) present every day and detracting from the peacefulness of the scene. Externally some of the decor is a bit tired and there seems to be an ongoing extension scheme. It is also somewhat out on a limb. Walking, you can get to Ravello in about 25 mins, Amalfi in just under an hour (well worth it) - but there are steps everywhere! The terrain makes it difficult and slow to get about, so bear this in mind if you want somewhere as a base.

We stayed at this little Italian Gem for two weeks in July...
Firstly, the hotel is not really suited for the Elderly or Infirm, As the translation Scala=Steps, suggests. The hotel like the mountainous area has plenty of these, with unless we missed something, NO facilities for anyone with walking difficulties.
The rooms, are average size, containing, Wardrobe,Large table,Small TV(With digital box attached.)(No apparent UK Channels, but some movies with an English language option) Mini Bar with price list. Ample power supply sockets at the bedside tables. Our room and most others we observed have balcony's containing small table and two chairs. Oh and absolutely stunning views across to Ravello . The bathroom/En-suite, I would say varies, from room to room, Ours was quite small but had all the facilities, ( ie: Shaver socket and old style wall mounted hair-dryer.)Good lighting in both rooms and outside balcony. Our room also had an electric Sun Canopy, which kept the room cool from the early morning sun.
We did request more drawer space which was supplied by the hotel.
The dining area of the Hotel is serviced by Antonio, and Anna, who both do a great job at making sure you get fuelled for the day ahead.. We found that if you wanted something else food wise, the family and staff were more then willing to facilitate. The terrace of the Restaurant has, like the room balcony's, stunning views over the ravine towards Ravello and beyond.
Food:- Breakfast was traditionally European, with pastries, croissants, breads, cheese, ham, jams and cereals. Coffee, tea and fruit juices.
Evening meals are on a two starter, two dinner choice, selected at breakfast. The starters are usually Pasta based, with the mains usually Meat or fish. Desert can be anything from Cheesecakes to Fruit. Wine and water are served with your meal, if required and the house wine (Red and White) are both very palatable. Half Carafes at time of writing are approx 4 euros. It should be noted that, if on any occasion you require something different for your meal, the staff and family, will normally facilitate your request.
After your evening meal, (which is served at 1930hrs) you can retire to the Garden Restaurant/Bar located down by the pool area of the hotel, this area is serviced by Stefano and Kiarra, who like Antonio and Anna, do a great job of making you feel at home. Again the views are terrific. Or you can walk into Scala town located about 10 minutes walk from the hotel.
The Garden Restaurant/Bar is, I said located by the pool, area, which has ample loungers and sun shades for guest/room ratio, it also has changing facilities /toilets/shower/hair-dryers etc (It should be noted that at weekends the pool area does fill up with local Italian families, so can be busy!)
You can partake of lunch/snacks in the Garden Restaurant (Which is also open to members of the public!) Everything we consumed here was excellent.
The hotel is family run and during our two week stay we got to know most of them. Their friendliness makes you feel like part of their family, just passing through.(So Italian-Terrific!)
The reception area has most information you will require for you stay, with free use of the computer there, courtesy of Michael (mee-KAY-lay) the manager. If you cannot find it here, your holiday Rep should be on hand to help (Sharon-Thomsons Rep is excellent!) If your a lone traveller The Village of Scala also has a Tourist Office.
Scala itself is a beautiful village based around a church square. It has as I mentioned a tourist office, several restaurants/bars/shops and bank with cash dispenser. It has two commemorative sites, one in the town, which consists of a walk through tunnel, to commemorate the people who lost their lives in 9/11(New York) The second is on the outskirts of the village, walking towards the hotel and consists of a commemorative garden/seating area in remembrance of Swedish passengers and crew whose plane crashed there n 1947.
The area is strewn with wonderful walks, which we have to say are not for the faint hearted, especially in the 34c July heat. But well worth it for the scenery! Travelling independently, you can buy local bus tickets from the gift shop in Scala Square. The best value one is approx 7euro 60. Which gives you travel on the local buses for 24hrs.
Conclusion:
Although ranked a three star hotel, it has inner qualities, that you have to be in Italian mode, to take in and appreciate. Home cooking, fresh vegetables, from the garden above the hotel, the whole families willingness to make your stay memorable, it all adds up to what you want it too, if you want fish and chips and no smoking, no drinking areas, stay at home-This is rural Italy at it;s best........
This was our second visit to the Amalfi area, and it is a stunningly beautiful area and the local people are so, friendly, many going out of their way to point us in the right direction. This trip was specially significant as we met and made friends with wonderful people, both local and guests alike...

Would generally agree with all the positive comments here. Scala is a delightful Italian village overlooking the Amalfi gorge facing Ravello on the other side. The hotel is clean and well-run, the food was delicious and the portions were small but then it is traditional Italian cooking so you wouldn't want too much of it (i.e. can be a bit on the heavy side!).
We were a bit irritated that the tables were allocated according to your room number so you sat where you were put - this meant that we never got to sit on the small terrace for breakfast and one night at dinner when we were on the terrace, we were moved without warning or explanation which was a bit annoying. It is true that the staff are friendly but we happened on a week where there were a number of others who had been before who kind of flaunted their relationship with Antonio and other staff and we felt like we had intruded on someone else's private club. In particular this was annoying when, on refusing to eat veal three times in a week, our request for salad was overlooked and although salad was provided once we refused to eat the veal, it was all too apparent that others were allowed to have all sorts of variations on the standard menu on the basis of sucking up to Antonio!! That aside, we had no complaints, we would just have preferred a more professional approach to dealing with guests.
The breakfast was fine (ham and cheese available now). The pool was clean and good to swim in and the surrounding areas offered beautiful scenery and nice walks (but there is a lot of climbing, to get down to Amalfi required descending and then ascending approx 1500 steps!).
Ravello has a festival which runs during July and August with music and food every night, mostly free. This was an unexpected bonus.
A reviewer here said take local buses rather than organised tours. Well, yes, except be aware that it can take longer than you think to get anywhere because of the hairpin nature of the only road which runs along the coast and the weight of traffic. It can take an hour to an hour and a half to travel just 20 kms. Also, this is Italy so don't necessarily except buses to run on time!
It was very crowded everywhere so returning to the hotel was a relief at the end of each hot day. Don't know that we'll return but in general, we enjoyed ourselves.

We returned to this delightful hotel in June this year after having a lovely holiday there last May. We weren't disappointed. The staff were as lovely and welcoming as last time, and even remembered us and the food was still delicious! We found the weather a little too hot this time but we were told that the high temperatures were unusual for June but, apart from that, everything was perfect. This is a lovely hotel to stay if you aren't a fan of noisy evening entertainment and prefer a relaxing drink in the bar. The pool is another reason we chose to come back. Small but so peaceful and with a stunning view overlooking Ravello. I think we may well return a third time next year, we love it so much here. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: All rooms overlook Ravello so any room is fine!

You feel well away from the busy coastline here in the village of Scala, with its square, bar, a couple of restaurants, churches, and a few shops, bank and tourist office. It's a very friendly little hotel and you have your own personal assistant in Antonio who is always happy to help and provides comedy as well! He very kindly worked out vegetarian menus for us every evening and we were there for 2 weeks. He also arranged for a fan in our room because the heat was intense. All the staff are friendly which makes it a lovely place to be and the views over to Ravello from the rooms and the restaurant are stunning. It's a great place for walks but they almost all start from the top, or bottom of numerous stone steps and mule-tracks so it's not the place for gentle strolls although there are two routes to Ravello which aren't too difficult. And the bus service is good if you don't want to walk, with lots of boat trips along the coast. We made some lovely friends in the hotel which made the holiday even better.

Room Tip: All rooms have lovely views
