“Italian hospitality at its best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2014

Recently returned from a family holiday. Arrived late at night and to our surprise were greeted with a pre-prepared meal. Breakfast is served on a verranda overlooking Ravello and the surrounding valley - great views - breath-taking to be more precise. The hotel staff are all absolutely charming and cannot do enough to help. Particular mention should be made of Maria, Carla and Cecilia. The pool area is comfortable and not too crowded, even allowing for the sunlounger reserver brigade. There is no need to do this to get a spot. The hotel only has 21 rooms but space around the pool for way more. We did half board but took lunch in the restaurant a few times. Great food. The evening meals are served in the restaurant 400m away. Straight forward no-nonsense Italian cuisine. Again the restaurant staff cannot do enough to please. Scala itself is quite a small provincial town which was fabulous to escape to, after the hustle and bustle of Amalfi and Positano. I would happily return to stay and plan on doing so. The rooms are basic but comfortable and spotlessly clean. Come with an open mind and be prepared to relax. Scala is not the place to stay if you are looking for a touristy experience, but I would strongly recommend it, if you want a retreat in the hills with great views, good on site cuisine and an authentic Italian experience. Would recommend walk to Ravello (20-25 mins) and Amalfi (60-70 mins) and a boat trip around the coastline. Amalfi is the hub for all transfers. Get the bus back from Amalfi after the walk down the mountain.

Room Tip: Suggest getting a room facing the pool and Ravello. The coast is only visible for a small part of th...

We have just returned from a second stay at the Villa Giuseppina last visit was '13. It was as expected. A wonderful 10 night stay due to the lovely people, wonderful food, gorgeous hotel and a view second to none. A big thank you to Lorenzo, Cecilia and Carla and all the other staff who are so welcoming and helpful. We would recommend this hotel to anyone, and thank Citalia for another wonderful summer holiday in beautiful Italy, Ian and Lesley Wattleyx

Room Tip: It's such a beautiful area that any room would be fine - but the ones that face Ravello are exce...

We were a group of 12 that enjoyed a week long stay at Villa Guiseppina. The wonderful staff from Lorenzo, Enzo, Cecilia, and everyone else were so accommodating, polite, kind and warm. We had beautiful views of Ravello with clean, comfortable rooms. Breakfast was served at the outdoor terrace daily- it is a refreshing way to start your morning! The multi-terraced property offered a restaurant and an amazing a swimming pool. Also, Lorenzo has the BEST homemade wine! I tried getting him to ship a case to me but because of its organic properties he said he was afraid it would spoil. I just might have to return next year there! We had dinner on multiple occasions at Hotel Margerita, it was one of my favorite places. Ester was a gracious host and the food was delicious!

A very memorable stay in a hotel in which the staff - without exception - are exceedingly friendly and helpful. The hotel commands a lovely view down the valley which can be viewed from various vantage points, particularly the breakfast terrace.
The pool is inviting and the rooms, although on the tight side, are spotless and comfortable.
The same friendly welcome is experienced at the sister hotel where half board evening meals are served. If the evening's menu is not to your taste they are quite happy to offer alternatives.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

My husband and I rented a car from Naples to drive along the Amalfi Coast. We decided to make the quaint town of Scala, our first base. Though beautiful in its own right, Scala is the much quieter and less happening neighbor of Ravello. The hotel is located on a hill, with ample parking spaces available for anyone doing their own driving.

On entering though, we found the hotel absolutely empty, even though presumably, we were being expected! There was not a soul in the pool side area, probably due to its closing time at 6 pm, and the reception was alarmingly empty as well. After a wait of about 15 minutes, and my husband having to go in search of someone in charge, we were finally attended to by a friendly woman at the reception. However, on a number of other occasions during our two day stay we had similar experiences with no one being around to help us- not answering phone calls when we'd call from our room, the bar being closed without explanation our first night there, to name just a few. Understandably, it is a small family-run operation, but it left us feeling frustrated.

The room (no. 3) was fairly large, and very charming with its Mediterranean decor. The balcony gave us a phenomenal view of the hills, looking over the sea, and it was lovely to see the sunrise from there. The only gripe we had with the room was its cleanliness as there were numerous tiny insects roaming around the floors, some of which later found their way into our luggage. The availability of wi-fi only in the reception area was also quite annoying.

The hotel has a restaurant tie-up with Hotel Margherita, a slight walk away, where we ate dinner our first night there. It was a very enjoyable meal accompanied by the delicious locally produced wine. Breakfasts on the terrace were particularly charming with the gorgeous view to look forward to.

Room Tip: Pick a room with a balcony to make the most of this hotel.

A truly small family run hotel in a fantastic setting with views to Ravello, the mountains and distant sea. Our room (no 1) was a good size -a triple with just the 2 of us, and the same fantastic views. On half board evening meals were taken at a sister hotel run by another part of the family a few hundred yards away in the village. We swapped and had lunch on the terrace a couple of times - excellent pasta dishes with 2 specials everyday.
The family and staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. There is a large shady free car park if you hire a car or the buses offer a reasonable service from the village centre.

The pool and terrace are of good size and again have a great setting. If you want the trappings of a corporate 5 star place -identical rooms, gym, jacuzzi, dressing gowns etc. this is not the place for you. If you want a genuine part of Italy and a glimpse of real Italian life it is.

The only reason for not rating as excellent was that the breakfast is very basic, with extras like yoghurt, fruit and eggs having to be paid for - but the breakfast terrace setting is again wonderful.

This is the third time we have spent a lovely ten days in Scala at Villa Giuseppina. We just love the location and the people. The staff are delightful and nothing is too much trouble. Having a pool at the hotel is a definite bonus and it is always clean. Lorenzo and Cecilia serve fantastic food from a comprehensive local menu and will even make a dish to order with a day's notice. A great base from which to explore the Amalfi Coast. We definitely recommend it - give Villa Giuseppina a try!
