The journey to the hotel from the autostrada through Cava de' Tirreni is quite tricky. My satnav took me to roads that ended in steps and one that was only inches wider than the car with both mirrors folded in. Once you find the Via San Benedetto things start to get a bit easier. The final road up to the hotel is also very narrow at the top, so it is safer to park in the hotel car park at the bottom of the hill.

Our superior room was comfortable but not particularly big. It had a nice balcony with views over the hotel gardens and the mountains down towards Vietri sul Mare. The bathroom was cramped but OK and was kept very clean except for the mould in the shower. The air conditioning worked efficiently - we did not need it all the time.

The staff were generally friendly and helpful. The pool attendant and the evening barman are to be particularly commended.

The restaurant is good for dinner in the evening and we ate there on 5 nights. We also ate at Le Foce and Vecchie Fornaci. These restaurants can be reached with an uphill walk of about 15 minutes. The food and drink are more rustic and significantly cheaper than in the hotel. You do need to be able to speak a small amount of Italian to get by.

The hotel has extensive grounds arranged in terraces down the hillside and there are plenty of outdoor seating areas. The pool itself is good. The poolside area is too small for the size of the hotel. However, it is well managed by the pool attendant who always made sure that we had space, loungers and towels. You can order soft drinks and snacks at the pool.

There were several weddings during our stay and sometimes the music went on quite late. The front of the hotel opens into the village square. Children play in the square noisily until late, which may affect rooms on that side of the hotel

If you decide to do the boat trip from Salerno to Capri (recommended) you should note that it leaves from the port, Molo Manfredi, not the Porto Turistici. The parking on the quay at Molo Manfredi is restricted to authorised vehicles.

Room Tip: Superior rooms have balconies with good mountain views

Agree with previous reviewers. Our GPS took us in a roundabout manner to a spot just down hill from the hotel. We enjoyed our stay here and found good value and excellent service. Very impressed by the size and variety of sitting rooms and decks available. Although we used our stay here to travel the Amalfi coast, Pompeii and Paestum; if we had a more leisurely itinerary we would have enjoyed spending more time at the hotel and the local neighborhood.

Room Tip: Our room was large and comfortable. There does not appear to be any specific location advantage.

Majestic in the past, a bit neglected now but still has an ambience and charm. Room was ordinary and a bit old, but it's not the main point. The restaurant, the garden with statues and the view on Amalfi coast - that is the main reason why people are still coming to this hotel. Definetely must visit

Room Tip: If you stay in this hotel, go for a dinner to Vietri sul Mare

This hotel was pretty cheap and I saw it had good ratings so I decided to stay there. I guess most people are not using GPS these days. I punched it on the GPS and drove right to it. The parking can be very cramped. We arrived late in the night without a reservation and were able to get our car into a tight parking spot. There was a room available for us. The Wi-Fi was free and was a decent speed, but not great. The breakfast was typical of offerings at Italian hotels. The outside eating area was beautiful. The parking was free and the room cost me about $67 USD, which is not bad at all. If I was in Salerno I would not hesitate to stay here again. I did not eat dinner here or anything and did not walk to the hotel. The front desk person spoke good English.

My wife and I stayed the first 2 nights of a 5-day whirlwind exploration of the Amalfi peninsula early June at Hotel Scapolatiello. To our great delight we found a place you only rarely come accross these days: a place located in beautiful as well as quiet surroundings off the beaten track in the middle of an authentic old Italian village, and yet with the comfort and luxury of a top hotel. Although we did visit sights in the vicinity we preferred to stay at the hotel to enjoy he delicious pool (with a stunning view), the supmtuous breakfast buffet (with a stunning view from the terrace), our beautifully decorated room (with a stunning view) or the many salons, drawing rooms or seating arrangements on the terreace - all in impeccable upkeep, as were the extensive gardens bursting with flowers and appealing scents. The staff at the reception were helpful and kind and helped us plan our outings. A visit to the neighbouring monestary is worth the while as is the lovely little Restaurant La Foce, just 300 m up the road behind the village Corpo di Cava where he hotel is located. Value for money and real Italian cuisine with authentic raw materials. The Hotel restaurant also serves a broad selection of Itaian food and although the service is classic and top-notch the food does not reach La Foce level. We are no planning to come back with our extended family next year to offer them an undiluted experience of the authentic, rural Italy in a comfortable setting.

Room Tip: It was our impression that all rooms have a view and as the hotel is located in a cul-de-sac mountain valley it is hard to see that they should not all have stunning views.
