“A Gem of a Hotel in perfect location.”
Reviewed 2 September 2012

Upon arrival we were promptly met by the lovely Hotel manager Mario and reception staff who explained what we needed to know on our first day. We had a standard room with a double bed, first floor that had a small balcony with table and chairs. Nicely positioned with a side view of the sea and mainland Italy/Islands. Room was very comfortable, not too big, more than sufficient for our needs as a couple. Room had safe, mini bar fridge (big enough for your own goodies), tv, air con and roll down shutters.
Furnishings in reception were very vice and the area was very bright and spacious. There was an open patio area with umbrellas for shade where you could enjoy your breakfast, lunch or evening entertainment. Restaurant was fabulous and we were lucky enough to be given a table next to the large sliding windows that had the most amazing views over the sea as the hotel was nicely positioned on a cliff. The breakfast and evening meal was made so much more enjoyable with the attention given by the lovely Maître D, Luigi, he was fantastic. Also thank you to Raffael who was equally attentive. You must prepare yourself for the evening meal as we soon found out, the portions on top of the extensive salad bar were extremely substantial, not a moment of hunger all week, the complete opposite. Meals were ordered in advance at breakfast time where the choice was very welcoming, pastas, soups, risotto's, fish and meat dishes that were always followed by equally sumptuous deserts. Breakfast was equally substantive with all salad vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, choices of bread, pastries, yoghurt's, juices and more. Once a week there was a gala night (Thursday). Coffee machine with choice for all and tea.
The Hotel has two pools, one warmer than the other as both are partly fed with thermal water from the islands volcanic sources. The really warm one was such a pleasure as the evening began to draw in, but the other more large pool was equally attractive with its views as it was set higher up the hotel facility.
There were steps down from the hotel garden to the beach. Initially on first week it had partial sun but as the second week set in, was predominantly in the shade. Don't let this put you off as once you were in the sea that started quite shallow you were once again emerged into brilliant sunshine. There was also the option to walk away from the hotels beach onto the nearby public beach that had more sun. Whatever it was very enjoyable, sea was warm and is safe for children. Nearby was the Spiaggia Inglese which was about ten minutes walk, part public and private. Hotel gardens and pool areas have more than ample sun beds. The hotel is set on different levels which for some may be quite a task due to the way the property sits on the side of the cliff/mountain. Knowing the hotel management I am sure they will accommodate most reasonable requests for those less able.
The property also had a small gym/beauty salon. Beautiful gardens with views across bay of Naples and nearby islands. After comparing locations of other hotels in Ischia Ponte, felt that this hotel was very well located in a quiet rural area and right on the beach.
Beer prices for a large draft were €7 each, wine started at €11 for a bottle, large bottle of water €3.
Internet is available at a charge.

Local info - Local supermarket will cost about €1.30 large bottle of beer, wine from appx €1.80, large soft drinks/water appx €1.30 - €2.00. Take away pizza (Pagoda) from clay oven, starting at a fabulous €2. Also you can enjoy a lovely pasta/toasted ciabatta in the Pirama pub, they were very welcoming and look after their returning customers ( beer is €3 for large Peroni or €4 for large draft). All are situated within 10 - 15 mins walk at the Port area from the hotel gardens through the cobbled streets. Again prepare yourself for the return uphill climb, but very beautiful. To walk into main town where the shops are, appx 15 - 20 mins from hotel. You can walk to the old town near the castle and that will take you about 35 - 40 mins from hotel. Local buses are frequent, can be very busy and will cost €1.90 for a 90 minute journey anywhere with any changes, once ticket is activated on the machine in bus (recommended or you risk on the spot fine). Tickets are available at hotel or kiosk at bus terminus/tobacconists.

So to sum up, the Hotel was perfect, any problem was easily resolved. The staff are just great and because of this it is very likely we will return. The island even though it isn't massive has so much to do and see, not forgetting nearby Proceda which is like a mini Amalfi coast!
Not forgetting the beautiful Mina who was our holiday advisor and the icing on the cake, a massive thank you to her.

Thank you Continental Mare and hope to see you again.

Room Tip: Most rooms have some sort of sea/garden view.

Beautiful view of the sea. Staff is very kind and professional, but the cleaning would need a bit of more attention, i ran out of toilet paper twice in a week. Rooms are big, but disappointing.
Breakfast is fine. As for dinner: very traditional dishes were offered, and there was always a choice between fish and meet. Service at the table was fine.
As for the facilities of the hotel: there are 2 swimming pools, a very very small gym, but would expect at least a free internet point and also a shuttle service to/from the porto area.
From the hotel there is a short cut to walk down to the porto. In front of the hotel there is a bus stop, but the buses are always packed. Therefore you are to get a taxi to move around.

My wife and I recently visited this lovely hotel in late July. The location and views were superb and the staff were both polite and helpful. We booked at late notice but still managed to upgrade our room to one with a wonderful sea view and balcony. Although the room and balcony were a little on the small side it was clean and tidy and was cleaned on a daily basis. The only other real negative point was the very small bathroom, which wouldnt have been quite so bad if it were not for the large bidet - I think the hotel has a fairly quirky layout and it would appear that the rooms vary considerably - it may be just the luck of the draw as to the size of your room to some degree. We opted for half board which if I am honest was a bit of a regret - the food whilst adequarte isnt particularly inspiring and can get a bit repetative. The dining area I have to say is really lovely and the food and tables are presented to a high standard as are the waiters who are very attentative and helpful as is the wonderful head waiter Luighi who was great and makes a real fuss of you. You order your evening dinner at breakfast time and the food is very plentiful. Normally it consists of 4 courses, pasta and fish etc, which were usually very good, its just the side dishes that could be a little bit different and not always what you order - fish on a bed of crisps is not really to my taste but hey when in Rome!! On the plus side the wine was very reasonably priced starting from around 14 Euros and any left over would be corked for you for the following evening. Breakfasts were very nice and normally served on the sunny terrace -alfresco. They were of the normal continental style but again a little bit repetative. That aside the main theme for this hotel is that it is very peaceful and although the rooms may not necessarily warrant 4 stars the external areas certainly make up for this and the gardens and pool areas are particularly special and are kept to an imaculate standard and there is never a rush to get a sunbed unlike some busier hotels that I have stayed at. There are plenty of shady areas to relax in and there is also a very small private beach down some fairly steep steps where sunbeds are available if you fancy a dip in the sea. There is also access from the hotel to a footpath into Ischia port which is handy and takes about 10 mins but a little longer coming back whcih is up hill and again fairly steep in places - a free shuttle bus service is available from the hotel but must be pre booked at reception and only goes one way for some reason with no return !! The local bus service is frequent but typically Italain - if you can handle the josttling etc it is a cheap alternative to the rather expensive local taxies(costs around 15 Euros from the port back to the hotel - a journey of less than a mile). The local town is a bustling little port and is bigger than we imagined. It tends to be particularly busy with local Italian tripppers at the weekends. We found eating out to be reasonably priced and generally good quality but again very busy with locals later on in the evenings especially at weekends. All in all I would recommend the Continental Marehotel if you are seeking a relaxing holiday with a nice freindly atmsosphere and has some stunning views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius(I would highly recommend upgrading to a sea view if you can run to it). Ischia is a lovely island and offers a nice alternative to the busier and more expensive resorts on the Neopolitan Riviera and Almalfi coast - we had a lovely holiday here and I would definatly love to return one day.

Room Tip: Book a room on an upper floor with a sea view and balcony - you wont regret it.

My wife and I visited this lovely hotel during a very hot part of June.
The staff and famous Mr.Mario were superb, as you can see from others the location is just great.
We booked Bed & Breakfast, but did use their dining room on 2 occasions, our only comment was that their menu was too large, and we could not manage such large portions.
We were able to have room 118, and as this has a large patio and wonderful views, we can recommend the extra cost.
Reception staff were very helpful, in particular with car hire arrangements.
ONE TIP leave yourself plenty of time to get the ferry back to Naples.
We will certainly return.

Room Tip: Breakfasts in Italy are usually rather simple, and Continental Mare could improve on this area

We have holidayed in Italy regularily over the last 10 years and can honestly say this holiday has been the pick of the bunch. The hotel was perfect in every way and the location breathtaking. The staff were fantastic and food superb. Our Thomson Rep Mina was delightful and we even attended our first welcome meeting! We couldn't believe the negative reviews we read before we left and can only assume the people had stayed in a different hotel and gave the wrong name! 11 out of 10!

Room Tip: Ask for a Sea View and terrace.

We have just got back from a week at the Continental Mare and it was fab in every way; food was lovely, staff in hotel nice and very helpfu. The little private beach is a gem for a nice swim and sunbathe. I used the big top pool for my morning swim and it was quiet cos most people were in the small pool in the garden. I can't praise this hotel enough it is bliss.

Room Tip: We had a sea view with a balcony but noticed they also had a couple of penthouse style rooms maybe n...

12th time to Italy for my wife and I, we have both had a wonderful time, it would be hard to fault the hotel or staff, as the title says everything was excellent.
There are rooms with easy access and some with more steps and stunning views.
If travelling with Thomsons, Mina the rep is a mine of information and a great ambasador for the company.
Would I go again? yes, but a tour of Tuscany and a visit to Puglia will come first I think.
