“A truly beautiful hotel and an oasis of calm”
Reviewed 26 June 2009

We stayed here for 7 nights for our honeymoon during the 1st week of June. We had a lovely room with a panoramic view from our balcony across the bay of naples. We were delighted with the hotel. Our room was very clean and spacious and both the room itself & bathroom were cleaned everyday. The hotel was quiet during the day as most guests were on excursions so frequently we had the whole swimming pool to ourselves. This was utter bliss. The hotel as a whole had an informal friendly atmosphere but without losing the quality of a good hotel. The staff gave the impression that they all got on very well and were always smiling and helpful.(particularly the barmand 'Genaro' ).
The food at the hotel really was delicious and every night we ate something different and always tasty - the views from the restaurant are lovely.
The only negative point to this hotel is that if anyone is less able to get around they may struggle as there are a lot of steps.. Also - the hotel drinks can be a little pricey; the hotel puts drinks and extra's on your room throughout the week so take care to keep track of your bill as it could be a bit of a shock at the end of the week!
All in all though we had an amazing honeymoon and we cannot recomend this hotel enough and would certainly return there again.

Have just spent a great week on Ischia which is beautiful, very green and stunning scenery. The Hotel Continental Mare is in a lovely location set on a cliff side & overlooking the coastline, hotel very clean, beautiful well maintained gardens, excellent food and service, staff all very friendly and welcoming. Two thermal pools again in wonderful locations. The hotel is about 20 minutes walk to the harbour in Ischia Porte, a walk which keeps you fit but if you can't face the uphill walk back then there's a regular bus service. Lots to see and do on the island, and a great place for a holiday with easy access to Pompei, Sorrento & Amalfi coast via the hydrofoil service to Naples which takes about 50 minutes. Very small rocky beach accessible to the hotel however with the two lovely pools didn't really miss the beach. The beaches dotted around the island also tend to be busy.

Just arrived back from a weeks holiday at this Hotel. I had previously read the reviews and was a little apprehensive.
The staff at the Hotel were fantastic.
The rooms are spotless. The garden and surroundings were delightful.
The location is easily one of the best on the Island.
The only down side to this Hotel is the steep climb up onto the main road, but there is a short cut into the port from the garden.
All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday !!!

The hotel location must be one of the best on the island with beautiful views across the bay. The food was well presented and tasted very good, plenty of choice for both breakfast and dinner. The staff were extremely helpful and the hotel itself was very clean. Would definitely go there again and would recommend it, only possible drawback is it's a long uphill walk from the town, but still worth it.

I can’t begin to guess who the people are that review this hotel so highly. The last reviewer had a room with a shared balcony and virtually no view, commented on the shabbiness of the place, and still said “We’re thinking of going back!” Are they kidding?

Shabby is an apt description, but even before the place became shabby, my wife and I would have considered it marginal, at best. Very few rooms have a good view or a private balcony. The lunch that previous reviewers rave about is a standard antipasto bar, although it is served on an attractive outdoor patio (the nicest spot in the hotel).

They do not have a restaurant; they have a dining room. At breakfast, you will be given a limited and mediocre menu and asked to select your entire dinner choice (from appetizer to dessert), and you will be told where you are going to sit in the dining room. It is run like a nursing home. We only ate one lunch at the hotel (upon our mid-day arrival), and ate no dinners at the hotel. There are too many nice restaurants all over the island, where everything (view, food, ambiance) is far superior.

The upper pool is dirty and ill maintained, the lower pool looks like someone’s backyard pool in a decidedly downscale neighborhood. Note the previous reviewer’s description of the pool facilities (no toilets, “RANK” shower . . . ).

Our room had no safe (some do, some don’t), so we put our valuables in one of the hotel’s safe deposit boxes. A day or two later, when I went to get something out of our safe deposit box, the clerk opened the box with our key and the hotel’s key, but the box was empty. Actually, he’d opened the wrong box – for all we know, every key opens every box.

My wife and I have stayed in hotels all over Europe, including hotels in more than a dozen cities and towns throughout Italy. We don’t generally stay in top tier hotels, so we’ve seen a broad range of 2-star, 3-star and 4-star hotels. In all our trips, this was the only time we have been disappointed with our choice.

This hotel is sub-par in virtually every possible way. We actually considered leaving Ischia and going back to Sorrento when we got to the Continental Mare, but decided to stay and see the island. Although we’re glad we did stay on the island, we would advise anyone considering a trip to Ischia to book a room somewhere else.

With no availabilty at our first choice hotel, we booked this hotel at the last minute at the height of the season. We were well aware that we were paying over the odds. However, the reviews on this site suggested that it had a fab location, and friendly staff - and offered the uesful tip of going for breakfast and or/lunch offer. To that end my boyfriend and I weren't disappointed.
From our experience,

*The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly.
*the views from the hotel were spectacular.
*the gardens are lovely, and the hotel has a unique feel.
*If you don't want to be in the thick of it, this hotel is perfect, the hotel is far enough away from the madding crowd to feel tranquil, yet there's a short cut, ten minute path (not for the stiletto wearer) into Ischia.

However, form the rave reviews on this site and the expedia 4* rating, we had expected it to be a little more luxurious!
I had paid extra for a room with a balcony and a sea view, and on arrival, the porter showed us to our room, opened the door onto the balcony and through various shrubs and trees, pointed at a patch of blue - that without my contact lenses I might have mistaken for sky! Oh, and the balcony, with it's plastic
table and seats was a shared balcony, we were in between two families so I didn't get to fulfill my hope of romantic smooching!

The room was clean and basic and large, but annoyingly we had twin beds that pushed together..again not ideal for my romantic weekend fantasies... I regulary ended up sleeping in "the gap".. but hadn't we booked a superior??
I 'd have hated to have seen the inferior.

The pools are small, but tranquil... the downstairs pool perfect for small children, and the upper one, is larger and so perfect for a swim and snooze- however there were no toilet facilities, and the shower, was for want of a better word, RANK!

The hotel, needs a little more maintenance and the best bet is to book the sepearate villa, or rooms that were in the original part of the hotel ( the hotel was once the home of an Americam milionaire and has been expanded).

All of this said, we had a brilliant time in Ischia, and we fell in love with the faded charm of the hotel. If you think more along a 3 star rating, (apart fromt he private villa) and if you book in advance, this hotel is a gem.

We're thinking of going back!

We stayed at this hotel as result of the reviews posted on this sight, but were sadly disappointed with the reality. We have stayed in a number of hotels across Europe and this one is a prime example of the rating of the hotel being greatly in excess of the facilities and service on site. We could excuse our transfer not turning up but we could not forgive the stale and musty smell in the room along with the tatty décor. The food was also a disappointment. Given that one has to order dinner at breakfast time, I would have expected a better attempt at Italian cuisine. I feel sorry for those who ventured away from simple pasta, which was usually edible.

This is a pity because the hotel is in a superb location with stunning views; the restaurants at the harbour are excellent; and the people are very friendly. The cleaning staff work very hard and the barman is an exemplar for the type of service that should be throughout the hotel. Absolutely visit Ischia; definitely do not stay at the Continental Mare. It is overpriced and overrated.
