“Levanto Great Train links to Cinque Terre”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

we travelled from Lake Garda to Milan by train where we met our daughter and partner and then we all continued by train to Levanto. As it was raining we asked to picked up and this worked well. It is about 10 minutes walk from the station which is ok when not travelling with big suitcases for a months trip. We stayed in the Red Diamond apartment which is situated on the ground floor below the establishment and it was as the pictures showed. We used the washing machine successfully. The bathroom has the toilet in it but we knew that before we booked. The garden was private. The bed comfortable and master bedroom big. Hosts great. When you travel all the way from New Zealand with only a few words of Italian it is a relief to come to a place that is what it says it is on websites. Many thanks

Last week we spent three nights at Villa Margherita in Levanto and thoroughly enjoyed it. We chose Levanto as our Cinque Terre base and it worked out fine. We arrived in Levanto by train from Monaco via Genoa. When we arrived at the Levanto train station, we called Villa Margherita and they sent a complimentary van to pick us up within 15 minutes. Federico, who was on duty most of time we visited the B & B office was very friendly and attentive to all of our needs.

There were four in our party. My wife and I shared one room and our two children, aged 17 and 22 shared the room next door. This worked out very well. The bedrooms and bathrooms were large and very clean. Just outside our rooms there is a grassy courtyard that overlooks the city. For 10 euros, Federico brought and poured us local wine to drink at the tables in the courtyard. It was very relaxing and fun. We were also able to meet other travelers there and exchange Cinque Terre insights.

There is a computer in the B & B main room that gave us easy internet access. Breakfast was always delicious, with an assortment of croissants, breads, cheese, pastries, fruit, granola, juices, and the best coffee I had on our entire two-week European vacation.

The short walk into town was easy, down a narrow, colorful street to the restaurants and shops. The walk to the train station from the B & B was only five to ten minutes. One interesting note is that when we first arrived, we spent 19 euros each to purchase the two-day Cinque Terre Train Card. However, we rode the train between the five towns six times and no one ever checked to see if anyone on the train had purchased tickets. If we had opted to buy a ticket on the train each time we took a train instead of buying the Cinque Terre Card ahead of time, we could have ridden the train for free for two days.

The only hike we took was the 3 to 4 mile hike between Levanto and the first town, Monterosso. We highly recommend this hike. It was very challenging, and our feet were killing us at the end of the 3-hour hike, but the stunning views of the Mediterranean and beautiful trail itself made the hike well worth it. Two trails were closed because of rockslides. They were between the bottom three towns: Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Corniglia. So, we had to take the train between those towns. Note that it can be very difficult to find the beginning of the trail in Levanto. It is not clearly marked. Just a set of steps in a doorway of a building off the beach. Even now I can’t explain how to find it. I recommend walking down to the beach and asking a local, which is what we did. If you have walked all the way to the boat reservation booth, you have walked too far.

When we checked out of Villa Margherita, we had to catch a flight between Genoa and Paris. Instead of taking a train and then a bus to the Genoa airport, we opted to take a shuttle van from Airport Express, which we arranged ahead of time. It was pricey (163 euros for the four of us), but it made the travel easy and hassle-free. Federico can also arrange a shuttle for you.

A beautiful B&B, charming sea views from our balcony, comfortable rooms, delightful breakfast. A/c, free wifi. Charming and very helpful staff. Situated a 5 min walk to the town centre. Will definitely return. Highly recommended!

This is a lovely little B & B that offers a great chance to relax after hiking or town walking in Cinque Terre. The rooms intended for two are fairly small, but come with access to outdoor seating, chaises and tables out on the grass surrounded by greenery. Other rooms, intended for families etc. are considerably larger and if one of those is within your budget that would make the stay especially comfortable. It's a short walk into town to take advantage of the many wonderful eateries in Levanto. A well-known short cut in the opposite direction will take you quickly to the train station for the Cinque Terre towns. Be sure to check schedules especially if you want to dine in one of the Cinque Terre towns or start an early morning (before the heat of the day) hike from one town to another. Staff is very friendly, helpful and having once had a restaurant in Santa Monica,CA speaks perfect English. The mostly cold breakfast spread was a bit disappointing given that it's a B&B, not supposedly just standard continental fare. A surprising number of pre-packaged items and just two fresh baked treats.

Room Tip: Rooms intended for more than 2 are considerably larger and have their own private patio.

I was at Villa Margherita this July and had a wonderful experience. The room was extremely confortable and spotless with a very nice view of Levanto. The breakfast was just great particularly when I sat outside and enjoyed the lovely gardens. The villa has a nice location for people interested in going to the beach or taking the train to visit Le Cinque Terre. If you are interested in hiking the location of the Villa offers a nice walk along pretty villas that will bring you to a walking and bike path along the old railroad. Overall a great experience and location for anyone wanting to experience this beautiful region of Italy.

I depend heavily on the TripAdvisor reviews, especially when booking hotels out of the country. I have to say, of the 5 hotels I booked for our Italy trip, this one was the only disappointment. The room was adequate and clean, the bathroom small and breakfast about the same as everywhere else we stayed. Where I really felt they fell short was in service. The owner was borderline rude to us and not at all helpful in planning activities. Perhaps he was having a bad day(s) but we nicknamed him "Mr. Grumpy". I only met what I have to assume was his sister when we checked out and really didn't have much interaction with her. The only bright spot was the owner's father Mario who, even with limited English, pointed us towards an excellent restaurant.

I must agree with a few of the other reviewers, I just don't think this hotel was worth the money. It was a decent base for Cinque Terre, but if I had it to do again, I would have looked for a place in Monterooso. The trains visit it just as frequently, it is big enough to have restaurants and beach services and can be the starting or ending point for hikes.
