We stayed here in September 2013 I had not been to the Cinque Terra in 30 years and boy has it been discovered by the masses. The scenery is still breathtaking but even in late September it is quite popular with tourists. June to August it must be a mad house even on the steep hiking trails. On our hike we never walked more than 10 minutes before meeting another party. Its a good crowd like most walkers but just too many of them for my taste. The first hint of its popularity came when we had trouble booking close to the water. We were reluctant to stay in the hills where L'Antico Borgo is located in the village of Dosso. Thank goodness we did stay here as it was up above the maddening crowd. It is also just off the AutoStrada so you can avoid all of the one lane traffic that snarls traffic in Levanto. The inn is pretty and has wonderful views. Big rooms that are clean and well appointed are a highlight. Clean? I mean to say very clean to the standard of Austria or Switzerland. The staff is a delight. They are quiet and unobtrusive yet they anticipate your needs and desires and are prompt and mindful of their duties. We really appreciated their service ethic midway through our 4 week traverse of Southern Europe. Looking back I realize that L'Antico gave one of the great service experiences of our trip. For dinner take their recommendation and visit the small restaurant in the neighboring village just down the hill. Its a 20 minute walk but drive at night. It is a modest place that was mostly locals when we were there. It is the only restaurant in the immediate area. Their English is modest but take time and follow their recommendations. Certainly eat the 4 course offering because the best dishes come at the end. Our vegetarians had plenty of choice. The salads were big and fresh and the pasta and meat was cooked expertly. Wine comes from one barrel but it is good! We met a German hiker who owns a place across the valley and he won't eat anywhere else in the Cinque Terra. Back to the Inn. The parking lot is up a steep hill 100 yards from the Inn. Don't be fooled, you can't drive down the paved drive unless you have tank treads. The staff can help move bags but we just schleped them down and it was fine. There are 10 steps to navigate before the Inn's front entrance too. The wifi in the lobby is great. Some rooms get better reception than others. If wifi is critical, ask the staff for the best room, close to the lobby no doubt. Breakfast on the veranda is wonderful with a busy but attentive and dedicated server. Be patient and enjoy the view.
