The only downside was the 200 Euro price...the rest was pure bliss and beauty. We read all of these negative reviews after booking the room, so we were a bit apprehensive going in. As soon as I walked in the staff made me feel at home. The room took my breath away! (#7 on the main level) The furniture was all very elegant with beautiful marble tops. The floor to ceiling double french doors were delightful and the frescoed ceiling was pure luxury! After looking at several hotels I had relegated myself to a cramped out of date bathroom, but I was overjoyed to find that the bath at the Stella Maris was beautifully updated with lovely cabinet vanities and a shower that converted to a full body spray option. As far as the noise, people, this is Italy not Beverly Hills. 99% of the buildings are hundreds of years old and don't exactly have the best in soundproofing technology. I stayed at three different places (two huge villas and a hotel) during my trip and all of them were a bit noisy - I just got used to it (earplugs are a must in my opinion, unless you are totally alone out in the country - but even the birds chirping will come right through those old windows!). And the noise was just part and parcel with the charm of being in the center of Levanto.

The location was excellent. Just two blocks from the beach and about a 5-7 minute walk to the train. I'd give anything to be back at the gorgeous Stella Maris!

PS The breakfast spread was outstanding! An array of cereals, pastries, fresh fruits, yoghurts, spreads, jams, cookies, meats and cheeses. One of the mornings we slept late and the front desk called to check and see if we wanted breakfast before they closed up because they noticed we had not come in yet- now that's personal service! When we walked out they had one single table all set up for us! I can't remember the name of the gentleman who serves you breakfast but he was an absolute joy. When we were checking out we were going to just grab some quick pastries to go but he insisted that we sit and eat :)

Paid 4 star rates (240 euros with dinner) for 1 or, at best, 2 star accommodation. Room was noisy, promised internet service sporadic, and in general we had the feeling of being ``ripped off.'' Particularly poor were dinners, which we were forced to take. The food was mediocre and service slow. Almost any restaurant picked at random would have been better. We had seen good reviews of the hotel restaurant, but beware: they have a separate menu at much higher prices. That food may have been good but we saw none of it. We had also seen reviews praising the warm and friendly staff. They proved accurate - especially nice was the head waiter and general handy-man - but friendliness can take you only so far.
Would never stay there again, even at reduced prices.

Accommodation in this area seems quite hard to find and is quite expensive. The nearby Cinque Terres walks are a world class attraction.
This hotel had major problems (exact nature unclear) when we visited as a family before Easter. We were relocated in the Annex. I thought the hotel handled this well. The Annex is perfectly comfortable. We were informed that the price would be lower without having to ask. We were directed to two local restaurants (both excellent) for the half board dinner we had booked. In the morning we had to walk round for breakfast to the main hotel but that was a minor inconvenience. The codes given for entry to the doors of Annex and hotel are likewise a minor inconvenience.
In other words this seemed like perfectly good accommodation in a pleasant town handy for the railway along to the villages which are the main attraction.

Stayed in the Stella Maris for three nights in August, We hoped it would be the finale of our two week holiday travelling around Italy. At 250 Euro per night (B&B including dinner) we expected great things.....
Our room was the only one located on street level in the old part of the hotel making it very noisy day and night! The air conditioning wasn't up to much making for a very hot room. Dinner choice was limited...and to be honest the food wasn't great...we ate out one night even though we had already paid for dinner! Don't be enticed by the frescoed ceilings, totally overrated. Would not recomend it.

We stayed there for two nights at the end of our honeymoon. We weren't expecting a ton as it was rated as a two star hotel, but we LOVED it even more than other five start hotels we stayed at in Italy. The people were very friendly, the rooms was BEAUTIFULLY decorated - the bathrooms were nice and clean - the food wasn't our favorite in Italy but it was good.

We loved staying in Levanto, rather than in the Cinque Terre - the town of Levanto was more quaint, quieter, had a great beach, and was less touristy than the towns in Cinque terre. Highly recommend for a place to stay!!!!

After staying in a many wonderful and charming hotels and B&Bs across Italy for almost a month, our visit came to a very sour finish at the Hotel Stella Maris in Levanto. Here briefly were the problems;

Extremely noisy location on the main town route to the beach and central piazza with constant traffic including loud motorcycles at all hours of the days and night The town's glass recycling bins is right outside the hotel which means the restaurant loudly crash their bottles into it late at night and early morning. We had requested a quiet room months ahead but staff refused to move us to another room even though there was sufficient turnover in guests. It may have been that all rooms had the same road and glass recycling noise problem.

The hotel does not answer its ground floor doorbell or assist in bringing bags to its higher floor rooms which require lugging bags up several flights of stairs. Even more disconcertingly they bar access to the hotel during the day without informing guests of the code number of the lock to gain entry. It took us fifteen minutes of loudly banging on the door to finally gain access to the hotel so we could go to our room.

Our room was large but overfurnished so there was little spare room for bags and while it looked charming at first glance it needed maintenance. TV never worked right but staff was unconcerned and never got it fixed in the days we were there. No towel racks, tiny bath. Door lock never worked.

Breakfast is much less than satisfactory and they do not put out enough of the desired items but ration them out. Contrary to their website much of the breakfast offerings were packaged in cellophane. Coffee and espresso are not hand made which is standard throughout Italy but comes from a vending type machine resulting in very poor quality. Dinner is worse and more expensive than nicer places in town.

Most importantly we were overcharged about 40 Euros per night according to the rack rates (which are a hotel's highest rates!) posted in our room but when questioned about it, the staff was evasive and unhelpful saying they were last year's rates but they were clearly shown as being for the current year.

Although they may not advertise it this is a tour package hotel and they have a exploitive attitude towards guests though some of the individual staff members are charming.

This was by far the very worst and overpriced hotel we ever stayed in Europe or elsewhere including hotels which we much more modest in their approach.

Levanto itself is a nice, picturesque town with good restaurants and easy access to (tourist ridden) Cinque Terre. If you plan to visit Cinque Terre take the boat which is a great way to see each town and others. One ticket gets you on and off the boat all day long.

Management response:Responded 18 July 2006

I am very sorry and irritated seeying persons who have not the courage of saying what they think!
I can understand that tv and the code to enter in but probably there was a momentary black out
because our control system is based on electricity.
For the noise, if the choice is a hotel close to the sea, in the centre of the town, it is not possible doing the
curfew. Therefore, the only solution is to close the window to be isolated from the noise.

Room size:
Our rooms are all differents but the complaint that the room of our guest is one of the largest we have
(30 mq) a room with idlers, small table, sommier and a big sofa.
When our guests come for the check in we give them a ticket with all the informations in their language
about the hotel and their stay(that is the name, the period of their reservation, the price and enter-code) to avoid useless protest at the check out.
So I can't think that persons, who took that room, were the most unlucky clients of the year.
Moreover, the photos on the website of our breakfast, are of our daily reality.
The containers are sealed because of the alimentary law HCCP which certificates the genuiness and freshness.

In conclusion: the title " Avoid Hotel Stella Maris like the plague" it is very offensive.
For the claim, if that person had answered some justification, my Staff internationally gratified for its kindness and liking, would have helped him.
If the guest would talk with me I will be extremely happy.....

Sincerely
Renza ed il suo Staff

I cannot believe that this is listed as a four star hotel. The rooms are beautiful and large. However, the street is very noisy and the service is terrible. I was kept awake all night with the noise of the locals bringing their recycling to the bins right outside the window!

The staff did little to make me feel at home and refused even small requests for help. And forget about food for breakfast if it is not on or near a day when they buy groceries.

Too bad....Levanto is a lovely town with excellent reataurants and a great beach. THere are better hotels as well.
