Levanto turned out to be the perfect place for exploring Cinque Terre. First of all it has the best beach - long, wide, and sandy, not rocky. We stayed in Levanto and loved everything about it as it was less crowded, just as charming, less expensive, full of amenities (including an affordable, well-stocked grocery store and laundromat near the beach by the park), great restaurants, train and boat stops, a calmer harbor, beautiful sunsets, friendly people, and the main area is on flatter ground - a real plus for senior citizens. We saw several groups hiking the hills that surround Levanto, so one can choose what kind of terrain they want to explore. The walk from the train station was too far for us, but younger tourists would be able to manage it. Our hotel sent a taxi for us, included with our reservation (Hotel Garden.).
