“Outstanding Resort”
Reviewed 22 October 2011

An outstanding resort set in the South West of Sicily near Sciacca. Beautiful rooms I think all with sea views and with fabulous bathrooms make this an idyllic spot for some autumn R&R. Only slight disappointment was the weather in early October - around 24C most of the time but a couple of very windy days and one wet thundery day but guess thats the season/ time of year for you and not the fault of the Resort! The rooms are spread around the grounds but generally within walking distance of the main building which houses the cocktail bar, the pool bar and restaurant, the breakfast restaurant and Fine Dining Restaurant. The three golf courses are fairly new and still need a bit of time to mature but they are links courses and you wouldnt expect too many trees etc anyway! Didnt try the golf but it looked challenging particularly on the windier days. The Spa is reputedly one of the largest in Europe and was very impressive, again set in a separate building opposite the main reception building with views mainly out to the golf courses. Excellent professional therapists. There is a small beach with white sand though I suspect the sand is imported as the rest of the coast is fairly pebbly. And a beach restaurant (Summer only). There were opportunities for sailing, wind surfing, boating from the beach and the resort has its own motor boat which guests can hire for sightseeing, fishing etc. Tennis Courts and I think shooting also available (didnt try as we were just chilling out!). There was also a daily schedule of various other activities if you wanted to join in. A very large double infinity pool with plenty of loungers etc and Palm Trees sets the scene between the hotel main building and the beach. The Golf clubhouse and shops are set away from the hotel towards the old "Torre" building which has been converted and added on to to provide locker rooms, 19th hole Bar and a delightful Trattoria style restaurant.
Golf buggies whisk you around the resort on request if you require, though walking was also a delight when the weather was good and there are hundreds of bicycles, including many child size and also even tandems available free to guests and they can be parked by your room and pretty well kept for your own use throughout your stay which was a fabulous idea. Only someone kept "riding off on one of "our ones" but quickly replaced with another! This is a delight especially as there are bike and walking trails that go around the golf courses and alongside Olive and Orange groves. The staff were all outstanding. Always smiling, nothing too much trouble be it restaurant, bars, pool, breakfast, reception, concierge, housekeeping. We were really impressed by the staff and the food and the amenities and had a great autumnal break. Its about an hour and a half drive from Palermo or Trapiano airports, whilst Catania is a slightly more challenging drive of about three hours. If you arrive after dark beware the entrance to the resort is tricky to find off the main road at km131 but not well signposted or light up! Once you reach the securuity post its another couple of kilometres to get to the hotel building and again after dark that can be a bit of a challenge. We managed to get lost but were soon rescued by a member of staff who was driving around looking for us. We were just there as an oldish couple but lots of people also there with children and miraculously they never seemed to be noisy or bothered us.

Room Tip: Try to get one of the front line single story rooms that have stunning uniterupted sea views and sun...

Hesitate when reading some of the negative reviews and must say am delighted I did not take them into account and followed my feelings regarding Rocco Forte Hotels. Everything was absoluetly overwhelming from the moment we arrived with personnal check-in organized at the terrace of the bar to the excellent food and wines, quality of service, room, pools, beach etc. to the email from the manager upon our return thanking us for our stay and asking for our rating and where they could still improve. Honestly everything was perfect; the only remark I could find was the level of noise during dinner at the Zagara restaurant but than one can't ask the other guest to be quiet...? ;-)
Highly recommend an will be returning

Where to start. Firstly, the Verdurans as we called those who work at the resort were an absolute joy: always ready to help with a smile. We got into a new habit on holiday; waving to everybody. My 9 and 10 year old boys couldn't get enough of the buggy rides; flagging them down all the time. The resort itself is only about an hour and 10 mins from either Palermo or Trapini airports....very easy to get to.

We loved the pool area, and the beach resort was great fun with wind-surfing and water-skiing on most days. The golf is phenomenal – and this is where you get some of the best in the world. You have two of Italy's best links courses right there. We spent a lot of time at the driving range where pyramids of gleaming white balls await you. The golf clinics are terrific and the kids loved them. They have top notch clay courts if you're a tennis nut, too.

The thing that really bowled us over was the relaxed, child-friendly atmosphere. My boys tear around and make noise – no one cared. Phew!! They soon identified Federico, the hotel manager with his striped linen blazer, as the fun guy who was always ready with ideas for what to do each day (not that you struggle to find activities).

That thing I love in the Mediterranean after hard day relaxing is getting ready to go out for dinner – and you have several excellent options. The Sicilian specialty sea food at La Zagara is delicious and the stone-baked pizzas at La Liola were superb if you want a less complex menu (well the Italians know how to make the best). Actually, I had one of the tastiest, saignent pieces of grilled tuna ever at Liola, too.

The pool area by night is spectacular and everyone seemed happy. We even spotted the owner, Sir Rocco, whacking golf balls at the drive and relaxing by the pool. Fabulous. We're coming back.

Room Tip: We liked the ground floor apartments. You can open the doors out and take in the scenery looking out...

Don't blame the staff, they are doing a good job and everyone is very nice. But the hotel itself is very disapointing, especially if you travel without children. The location is really boring, the golf courses as well, the beach is just a piece of sand on a unpleasant shore. The pool's depth is max 1,20m, so you can't really enjoy it when you're an adult. Food is only ok at the main restaurant (other are from standard to bad). But most of all there is not charm at all. It's not about the minimalist design that it could love in other hotels. But the architect and room decorators just did a bad work. And all in all, it's really expensive. You could expect much much more for the price (Timeo in Taormina was 20% cheaper and so much better for instance). The only very good point is the spa which is excellent.

We usually travel further afield in Summer - our last few holidays have been to The Seychelles (Four Seasons) and The Maldives (Reethi Rah and Four Seasons) , both incredible resorts, but this year we had less time and couldn't face the long flights. Verdura gave us everything these resorts could and only a 3 hour hop from London.
We loved the minimalist architecture (although it wouldn't appeal to everyone) and our rooms were beautifully designed - minimalist again but the decor was lifted by strong use of colour which gave it a lighter, holiday feel and were almost on the beach. If you can it is well worth going the extra for the rooms in the Landscape villas as these were more private and had, I think, little extras that the others didn't - nespresso machines, ipod speakers... .The gym was the best equipped I have ever seen in a hotel, not just a few Technogym runners but every possible weight machine and the spa was beautiful and never too busy to get treatments when you want. The setting was stunning, particularly in the evening with sunsets over the palm tree lined horizon.
We are not foodies, two of us don't eat meat, but the pizzas and pastas were delicious (this is Italy !) and there was always a good selection of fruits and salads in the buffets.
We personally were not fans of the live music in the bar each night. The musician is a very talented guitarist but we found it a little too loud when we wanted to talk. it was however very popular with other guests. Evening entertainment is very difficult to get right in a holiday resort as you will never please everyone and at least it meant there was some life in the place after dinner (we have spent many evenings in deserted holiday hotel bars as the honeymoon couples and parents with young children all disappeared in the evenings !) Perhaps the pool bar could be opened in the evening for those seeking a quieter pre/post dinner drink.
The staff were all helpful and friendly and seemed genuinely interested in making the guests happy ,not just going through the motions.
One last tip, bring lots of reading material, we couldn't find any English daily newspapers, magazines or books on the island
Overall there was a lovely relaxed feel about this resort (beautiful well behaved children played happily everywhere) which makes it perfect for those seeking the luxury and style of a 5 star resort but without the formality of some hotels.

This hotel is an absolute 'must stay' if visiting Sicily or generally wanting a completely restful & hassle free family holiday. The well run kids club & teens club meant that my children were wonderfully occupied for the two weeks spent there - My 13 year old son learnt to cook a delicious risotto under the watchful eye of head chef Fabio, plenty of watersports on the beach, golf, tennis, beach parties... This really is a fabulous 5 star resort - the rooms, environment and extremely attendant staff exceeded our expectations.

First of all I should make it clear - Sicily is a beautiful island, the people are warm and friendly and there is so much to see and do. We will come back- just not to this resort. Here are the good things about the resort:
The staff are polite, friendly and wish to make your stay as enjoyable as possible:
There is a huge pool area:
The rooms are comfortable and well appointed:
There are very good children's facilities (be warned though, this resort teems with young children in the summer which could be a pain for couples):
The spa and its pools are very nice.

Where this resort falls down, and it does so big time, is the food. Sicily is an island with a unique culinary tradition - part Italian but part all of its own. Outside of Naples it is the place to have pizza. The seafood is plentiful and in the small restaurants we escaped to it was amazing (and reasonably priced). At Verdura there are 3 main restaurants - one "fine dining", one a supposedly traditional trattoria and the other a fish/seafood place. The fine dining restaurant under the oversight of Fulvio Pierangelini (in 2008 his then restaurant was ranked 12th in the world) is very nice. Expect to pay an average of 26 euros for a starter and majorly upwards of that for a main course. It is not really suitable for young children The fish restaurant is OK - no greater than that and it pales into comparison with the local fish restaurants that charge half the price. The trattoria is grim - calzone that is dry and hard, trapanese seafood cous cous (a local dish) that was bland, watery and plain awful and so-so pizzas. None of it cheap either.

So, you just enjoy the other benefits of the resort and escape in the evenings to local places? Not that easy unless you are brave enough to hire a car (and you need to be brave to drive in the towns) or are prepared to pay at least 60 euros for a taxi to and from Sciacca, the nearest town! This is because Verdura is in the middle of nowhere - literally- and that is the big drawback and I guess what provides Rocco Forte with little or no incentive to change the catering for the better.
