“Historic area to stay.”
Reviewed 15 July 2014 via mobile

A trick to find this place after an even frustrating drive. Then parking and carrying luggage down many steps it was good to be there.
A great position although rooms a tad cell like. There is however a nice sitting area and bar.
Location for seeing the area is good, take good walking shoes!
The staff were lovely and helpful, very friendly indeed.
So if you go do yourself a favour and carry as little as possible to the B&B !

Modern little B&B situated in the heart of historic Sciacca. The way it is built the staircase to the hallway, where the rooms are, is outside so because of this the rooms can be quite drafty in November which is when we were there. Our hostesses were very friendly and helpful. Within walking distance to many great cafes, shops and restaurants. The bar we frequented nightly was only a few steps away but there was no issue with noise. Rooms were a bit small but not a problem since were there only to sleep anyway. Breakfast was nothing outstanding, just some yogurt, cereal, bread and fresh meats. Overall a pleasant experience during our time in Sciacca.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Locanda Al Moro overnight during our trip in Sicily. We found Sciacca to be a great location as a stopover before continuing our journey to Burgio (Agrigento) to visit my family. We booked this hotel from New York 2 months before our arrival and had no issues with our reservation when we arrived.

Please just be aware of the following:

1. The hotel is a bit tricky to find, there are some signs to follow that say “Locanda Al Moro” so keep a lookout for those. Our (TomTom) GPS system couldn’t pinpoint the exact location but we did end up finding it on our own.

2. There is no parking – but apparently parking is a huge problem in all of Sciacca. Your best bet is to park illegally for a couple of minutes on via Licata, take your luggage to the hotel, then drive your car around to either the public parking areas or find a spot on the street. We were lucky to find parking on the street for the night. Also, note that the reception is closed from 1:00-4:00 P.M. so don’t arrive in the middle of the afternoon- which worked out great for us because we didn’t arrive until after 8pm.

3. Stairs, stairs, stairs. The steps from the reception to the rooms on the next floor are very steep. Also, the ascent from Via Licata to the hotel has plenty of steps as well. You can’t get any closer than this with your car.

Their rates are very reasonable. We appreciated that the B&B was centrally located & that Lisa spoke English (even though my boyfriend & I both speak Italian). Our room was spacious & well decorated in a modern style & the bed was comfortable. The lighting in the room wasn’t extremely bright and we had a slight issue with the AC. We had to call Lisa to come to our room to help get it started. Not sure if we didn’t know how to turn it on properly or if it just wasn’t working correctly. Being that it was June (2012) we needed the AC. The bathroom was decent & served the purpose but it could use some updating. Again, we were only there (literally) overnight so it was not a major issue for us. The common areas are all very nicely decorated as well. We loved the old world charm of the building with the modern furniture. They even had a room using my family name!! (it’s one of the wines they offer in the B&B). It was very convenient that we had our own keys to the front door & our room.

After we settled in, we asked Lisa for a decent restaurant within walking distance for dinner & she recommended Hostaria del Vicolo (which was also recommended to me on Tripadvisor). Great restaurant, very quaint & romantic, wonderfully located (literally about a minute or two from the B&B) & the food was outstanding (you must eat fish while in Sciacca!)
The breakfast area was very nice & the food was typical Italian breakfast fare. Before we checked out we were able to walk around Sciacca and take some pictures. Once we checked out, we actually decided to stop in a panificio or “bakery” and got some delicious sweets to take back to our families!

This hotel/B&B was recommended to me by someone on Tripadvisor & I am glad I took their advice. It was not the first time for us in Sicily, but it was the first time for us in Sciacca. Overall it was a nice stay in Sciacca, the B&B was perfect for the one night stay.

The only downside of Locanda Al Moro is the lack of parking but as other reviewers have said, parking is difficult in all of Sciacca.

Parking (and stairs) aside, this was a wonderful place to stay. The owner, Lisa, is an engaging, beaming host and so helpful - she even met us in one of the main squares to guide us to the hotel when we could not find it. Lisa was also able to recommend beaches, restaurants and other things to do. Rooms were clean, light filled and comfortable and there were a range of options for breakfast.

Sciacca is a very picturesque town - we will always remember the wonderful ceramic shops. For someone with a Sicilian background, it was fascinating to see a different part of the island with some distinctly Arabic influences.

Trip Advisor: Locanda Al Moro

First, some caveats (these aren’t negative comments, but simply things that you should be aware of:

The hotel is tricky to find – be sure to take the Sciacca exit on the East side of town (not any of the Western exits if you are coming from Palermo) then follow their website instructions to Via Licata. (Go to Google Maps to see their relative location to Via Licata.

No parking – parking is a huge problem in all of Sciacca. Your best bet is to park illegally for a couple of minutes on via Licata, take your luggage to the hotel, then drive your car down to the large public parking lot: go down Via Roma, right on Corso Vitorria Emanuel, left on via P. Gerardi (it looks like it’s one-way to the right but yes , do turn left, left on Incisa, then after 2 blocks turn right into the parking lot. From there it’s a relatively easy walk (uphill) back to the hotel. Note that the reception is closed from 1:00-4:00 P.M. so don’t arrive in the middle of the afternoon.

Stairs, stairs, stairs = the steps from the reception to the rooms on the next floor are VERY steep. Be forewarned. Also, the ascent from Via Licata to the hotel is about 99 steps, with your luggage. You can’t get any closer than this with your car. Also, from the parking lot up to Via Licata is about another 200 steps (but at least you will have already dropped your luggage).

Now for the good part! Despite my preceding caveats, this is the 2nd time my wife and I have stayed here and whenever we return to Sciacca, we will absolutely come back to Al Moro! For one thing, their rates are VERY reasonable. The rooms are quite spacious, by Italian standards, and the condition of the rooms and the entire hotel is quite modern and well-maintained.

The greatest reason that we will return here is the very sincere, personalized care that we have been given by the two ladies who run the hotel – Lisa and Kahla. Both speak excellent English (and possibly about 4 other languages). I received lots of good information, directions, advice, etc. in the weeks prior to our arrival. Once we arrived, they bent over backward to help us with anything we needed – advice on parking, where to buy whatever, restaurant reservations, driving directions for our excursions, etc. They don’t have an ice machine, but once we told them that we like some bourbon on the rocks at 5:00, they filled little freezer ice cube bags every day. On a Saturday afternoon when all of the shops were closed and I desperately needed a USB drive to back up my photographs, Lisa got a friend to open up his shop and bring one to the hotel for me.

We found Sciacca to be a great location to use as a base for exploring this part of Sicily for 4-6 days. It is in easy driving distance to Marsala, the salt flats of Trapani, Erice, Segenta, and the temples of Agrigento. The people are VERY genuine, friendly, family-oriented and open to helping visitors. We found that very few people spoke much, if any, English. When you visit Sciacca, it probably would be an advantage to have a knowledge of some key Italian terms – i.e. where, how much, bathroom (toilette), numbers, I want, etc. Having a phrase book is good, but it helps if you have already studied a few of the terms.

Sorry for posting so much information, but I hope it’s helpful. I’m sure that if you have more detailed questions, you’ll get good advice by Emailing Locanda Al Moro.

Lisa was welcoming and helpful in every regard, even arranging for our personal laundry to be done. The breakfast was outstanding and the building is centrally located near the piazza. Also Sciacca is an outstanding community well worth a few days visit-it is central to many beaches and several Greek ruins.

I stayed here last month with my wife and two friends. I left my phone behind me and the staff kindly sent it on to my home address by registered post. You cannot ask for better service than that. Sciacca was one of the highlights of Sicily for me and the Locanda Al Moro is right in the centre of the old Medieval town. Staff were very helpful and the breakfast was good.

I would highly recommend the public thermal swimming pool in Sciacca. For €6 you get half a day in proper thermal waters that you would pay over the odds for in a fancy hotel. A walk around the old city walls is also highly recommended. This is all within easy each of the Locanda al Moro.
