“Country living close to many towns and sights”

We spent four evenings at Monte Poni. I wish it would have been a whole week. Close to San Gimignano and Volterra. You do not want to miss Panzano, about 8 KM away, a quaint town with a world renowned butcher, Dario Cecchini.

We wanted to go to Lucca, but spending a day on the property won over the day trip. I'm glad we spent the day there, we unwound from about 10 days of sightseeing, driving and overloading on a packed schedule. We rented the 2-bedroom apartment. A huge benefit, we made dinner all four nights. Shopping in Greve is easy and fun. A nice Co-Op, on Thursday morning a fresh fish market, the butcher in town and we found a fresh pasta shop. Also, buy your wine at the small wine shops and Pastry shops. Amazing deals for 5 to 10 euros.

Deidre was a perfect host, she lent us her map, shared great sights and her laid back feel made us comfortable and feeling at home.

Room Tip: Nestled in the woods above Greve. Just driving up the drive to the property, gave us a feel of being...

My family and I stayed at Monte Poni for a week, using it as a home base for our stay in Tuscany. It far exceeded my expectations! It is an authentic, rustic villa, formerly part of the Verrazzano family estate, and it has been restored into a captivating and wholly charming property by its talented owner, Deirdre Woode. We were in Italy for two weeks, but the time that we spent in Monte Poni was by far the most relaxing, allowing us to get off the tourist treadmill and see things of our own choosing and at our own pace.

The villa sits up on a ridge, just below Panzano and across from the Villa Vignamaggio (the home of (Mona) Lisa Gherardini, and the setting of Kenneth Branaugh’s Much Ado About Nothing). It’s location is ideal to catch cool evening breezes that run over the ridge. The relaxed setting helped us really feel like we were on vacation and the refreshing pool really restored us after a day in the tourist-thick heat of Florence.
We stayed in the four-person Alba unit and really enjoyed going into nearby Greve almost every night to get ultra-fresh provisions. We became fast friends with the butchers at Falorni’s (for any meat eater your eyes will pop out of your head at all of the choices of meats and cheeses – and the 100 whole prosciutto legs hanging from the ceiling), the fresh pasta man, the bakery owner, and the pastry shop people. What a treat!

Monte Poni is ideally situated 20 minutes south of Florence, and 25 minutes north of Siena, right along the Chianti Road. It is the perfect home base for trips to those cities as well as the charming, smaller destinations of Castellina in Chianti (the best gelato), San Gimignano (great shopping), Lamole (dinner at Lamole di Lamole is a must for any foodie), Panzano (Deirdre organized a cooking lesson for our family with owner and chef of the Enoteca Baldi - one of the high points of our entire trip). Also for any foodie is a dinner at Solociccia in Panzano from Dario Cecchini of the book Heat, fame. Although we speak enough Italian to get around, Deirdre took care of all of the dinner and cooking class reservations, and the ease of communicating with a tri-lingual American was a plus.

Highly, absolutely and completely recommend Monte Poni.

Have been to Tuscany many times and finally found the PERFECT place to stay. Monte Poni has everything you could possibly need and want: Great location 3km from Greve in Chianti (very easy to find just off main road), incredible views, great amenities including beautiful gardens and pool but most importantly there is your host Deirdre.

Deirdre communicated well leading up to our visit and was instramental in assisting us with transportation to the villa, setting up wine tours, making cooking class reservations and giving you great local knowledge. Better yet, Deirdre is so much fun and will make your trip to Tuscany memorable.

We will never stay anywhere else in Tuscany and cant wait to go back!

We stayed in the La Torre apartment at Monte Poni in late May 2010. We were warmly greeted by Deirdre upon our arrival. She is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to where to find the freshest produce, cheese and meats. The restaurant she suggested, Lamole we loved so much we went back to twice! She even gave us a lesson on how to make your own espresso drinks with a stovetop espresso maker and manuel milk frother. I ended up buying one of my own once I got back home!

The location made a great home base for day trips to Siena, Florence and Panzano. We even took a guided wine tour with Simone Mazzini (Deirdre's recommendation) to Montalcino and Montepulciano (about 2 hours away).

We also had a great cooking class with Mimmo Baldi (another Deirdre recommendation) at his wine bar/restaurant in Panzano.

The villa is very spacious and clean. Deirdre has a folder with helpful information and maps. There is also a small bookshelf of Italy reference books. The villa is beautifully landscaped. There is wifi access sometimes...it kept going in and out. It was a shame the weather was on the coolside so we did not get to enjoy the pool.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience at Monte Poni!!!

My girlfriend and two other couples had an amazing time at Monte Poni. Deidre the owner was so helpful whether it was pointing out the right shops to get good food in the town of Greve, to helping set up wine tours and cooking classes. We really felt like we were staying at a family members house. The grounds were gorgeous and the views spectacular. We stayed in La Torre and the rooms were very spacious and clean. Our first night we decided to cook dinner at the villa and thanks to Deidre's suggestions, had amazing food from tender meats to fresh vegetables. We were unable to use the pool because it was too cold, but hopefully we can return again when it is warmer and enjoy that as well. We highly recommend staying with Deidre!

This is a great place to rent for an extended stay in Tuscany. There are three unts of varying sizes, all well-appointed with every amenity. Each has a full kitchen with adorable accessories. The pool is award winning fabulous and the location sublime for exploring the tuscan countryside. The owner is a true pro - she knows the area and the locals very well. We had a great visit; relaxing and restful.
