“Excellent hotel”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

A large party of us stayed at the Garden Hotel as we were in Citta di Castelli for a wedding. We found the staff helpful, the rooms were not too spacious but were well equipped and cleaned daily to a high standard. We ate in the restaurant twice and the food was excellent and not too pricey. Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice of both food and drinks. The walk in to the town took about 15/20 minutes but a taxi on one occasion only cost 6 euros. There is plenty of pleasant outside seating at the hotel. I would certainly stay there again

Hotel Garden claims four stars, but three is a stretch, in my opinion. It is a large contemporary building on the edge of town, a 1.5 km walk into the wonderful old town. It has no character at all, but staff on the desk were very helpful and wifi is free. My single room was small and furnishings were tired. The small bathroom mostly worked, although the lever operated plug jammed in the basin plug hole. Dinner in the restaurant was good, though my green beans with the secondi were cooked to death. Breakfast was better than average, but juice, coffee and yogurt dispensed from machines was a bit poor- yet many places dont offer these at all.

Room Tip: Check them out first! The corridors can be very noisy, so maybe one near the end is best.

I last stayed at this hotel in November 2012, but my husband and I have used it quite a few times over the years, the rooms are a little small and the showers really do need upgrading it seems they have concentrated on the health and beauty side and not enough on the rooms. There is only one family room in the hotel it would be quite easy to convert a couple more, The main staircase also needs attention.
. We have looked and indeed stayed at other hotels in the area, but the Garden always pulls us back. The staff are so helpful nothing is to much trouble. The food is excellent.
As for star rating when we first went to the Garden some eleven years ago it was a three star. Whilst a lot of improvements have been made there is still more to be done. But never the less it takes a lot of beating.

Room Tip: All rooms are much the same

The hotel is clearly over stated, I will give a 2,5 stars, but never 4 stars. The website says a short walk to the center but in reality it is a good walk. The room was smelly because of old carpet. in fact, the whole hotel is very old and if you take the stairs instead of the lift, you will see mold everywhere.
Pros: pool (but not sure about hygiene there), breakfast, parking
Cons: smelly room, uncomfortable bed and pillows, location

Overpriced for what you get.

I always take these reviews with a pinch of salt, so I thought I'd take time to write a resume of my holiday in Citta di Castello.
So, what of the hotel? It's not exactly easy to find even with Sat-Nav and our taxi driver had a few 'moments' before finally finding it tucked away just off the main road. (strangely, walking around it is exceptionally well sign-posted).
First impressions are mixed. The beautful gardens as you walk up the drive, and a slightly tired exterior to the building, but inside it is truly glorious.
The entrance leads into a beautful reception area off which lead the bar, restaurant area, pool/reading room & conference facilities. Down stairs, is the 'Well Being Centre' with steam rooms, jacuzzi & the like. All floors are serviced by a lift (albeit a small one - which at peak periods sometimes proves to be slower than walking as it shuttles between the floors). The alternative is a spiral stair well, with fairly narrow stairs (even at their widest point!). All the rooms are upstairs, so I'm guessing if you had a wheel chair you'd need to ask to use the service lift.
Food was superb, and the restaurant is obviously very popoular with the locals as it was always well attended by businessmen at lunch time, and during our stay they held two functions, one a wedding. Always a good sign I find if the locals like it. There is a verndah overlooking the pool area where you can enjoy your meal 'al fresco'.
As for the room, it was large, airy, exceptionally clean and attended every day. Our balcony (R:302) overlooked the pool/gardens & neighbouring sports centre pool and commanded spectacular views over the Tevere Valley - even when the weather wasn't at its best.
When the weather was good, we spent most of our free time sat around the pool. Not heated in case you're wondering as I found to my surprise!! Daily tended, the pool & gardens are superb. You can sit/lie, soaking up the ambience, and could easily be in the middle of nowhere. It's very quiet - except when there is something going on at the adjacent pool when it does get a bit noisier - thankfully not too intrusive.
As for local amenities, the town itself is a leisurely 15/20 minute walk - uphill on the return - oh, and the pavements are narrow if non-existent and cars are permitted to park on them There is a Famiglia supermarket 5 minutes away by the roundabout and the Hotel Garden site (off complex) has a snack bar & pizzeria next to the health club/gym (didn't try either). There is also a night club (Formula) at the back of the hotel (no noise at all!!).
Castello itself is a small medieval city with narrow streets, plenty to see and if you've seen it all there is a train station to take you to Florence, Pisa, Rome, Assisi or Lake Trasimeno. Beware though as despite having horse & cart-wide streets, modern day horse power is allowed within the city walls - even the 'pedestrianised' bits.
Food within the walls is excellent too, my favourite being the 'L'Osterio' which is located off the main Square via small alleyway (Via Borgo di Sotto). I also recommend a visit to Caffe Magi, a local bar, although it can be a bit of a Brit ex-pat bar (sells Guinness!!)
I guess I've told you about everything I can. There are no real pitfalls to the place other than disabled access as I've mentioned. Castello itself is more or less on one level so there will be no difficulties there.
In only have one more thing to say... 'ENJOY'

This is a great hotel! Yes it's a 1970's 5 storey rectangle but it's been very tastefully refurbished. Rooms are large, comfortable, each with a balcony. Staff are welcoming, helpful and eager to please. Restaurant food was good, plentiful and an excellent choice. Peaceful garden with a pool, and a relaxing bar for a drink after dinner.

Hotel is well located for seeing Assisi, Arezzo, GUbbio, Siena, Florence and San Gimignano. COuntryside is beautiful and Citta di Castello is a pretty town too.
