“Basic but good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

Stayed here 3 nights B&B. Hotel itself is quite standard, room was good size, bathroom as well, all clean. We had balcony with the ocean view (which I believe most rooms have), so I would suggest you to get a higher floor as the view is nice. Pool area isn't too big but for the time we were there, not many people preferred to stay at pool as beach is near. Breakfast were quite basic, not much of variety that was the reason why we didn't eat lunch or dinner in the hotel. However, there are great restaurants near the beach front, like 5-10 min walk, very fresh food and ok price. The hotel itself is very close to the beach like 5 min walk. This area though itself isn't the party place, it is more quieter and you tend to see more old people, however, it is a great place for a romantic trip, to escape the fuzz, and if you feel like a party, there is a beach 6min ride by taxi called Villamoura where you can have a night out, they have some British pubs as well. If you prefer to do some watersports and other activities then you should choose a different location - Albufeira, as most activities take place there.
Overall, it was a good experience for a short 3 days. If you want to have a short romantic break this is a good choice.

Good central location on a busy main road, close to the Bus Station , yet 2 minutes walk to the main beach and it;s facilities. All rooms have air conditioning /heat TVs and good sized well equipped bathrooms ( our room was a corner room on the 9th floor with 2 balconies ; one road view one sea view ) Rooms are basic but clean ; The All inclusive is also basic compared to most of the AI we have taken before. There was always something to eat , the standard is good for the price we paid. We noted that if you go in for your meal at 7pm the first thing to do is get your sweet , as once they were gone....they were gone !!! Also is you were late going in for any of the meals ( as times are set) the later you were the less choice there was as dishes were often not replenished. The AI drinks service stops at 10pm ; the two local bars popular with the "crowd " we were with were Baz and Minnies Irish Bar and Fantasia ( Fantasia is just around the corner on the front and the Irish bar a bit further up off on a side street. Local drink prices 2 Euro for a pint or below ) Our drinks service in the Hotel was excellent. The red wine was nice and the local spirits OK. Although they weren't the most pleasant and smiley of staff the service was good and the barman Andre was very knowledgeable and helpful, especially with local knowledge.(for example as a fisherman he warned me that I would need a licence to fish in the sea : this can only be done through a local ATM machine but it is Portugese so try to research this before you travel ; 4 Euro for 6 months 6 euro for 12 months - 25 euro fine if you get caught!!)
The pool area is small - we were there in winter months so the sunbeds were limited and no towel service. This may be different in the summer months. Also while we were there the pool wasn't cleaned. There is a nice outdoor decking area which tends to be the meeting place for the smokers ( Ashtrays scarce!) . It's a good sun trap and we had a good friendly crowd for all of our visit - the good company helped make the holiday extra enjoyable.
The whole area of Quarteria - Villamoura is clean and flat approx 30 minutes walk between the two resorts. The areas promenade is pleasant and a nice walk. ( which gets very busy with locals at weekends even in the winter months)
The beaches in the whole of this area are lovely - wide safe and clean ( the beach cleaning is second to none) Each area is clearly marked. In Quarteria every Wednesday there is a "Gypsy Market" ( by Lidl appox 30 min walk on the main road area , or we we advised 4.5 euro in a taxi from the hotel ) . Also on Wednesdays but in the town area there is a fruit/veg/flower/fish local produce market. The town has a daily local fruit , veg and fish market in buildings on the beachfront area, before the area between Quarteria and Vilamoura. Also selling local produce with nice clean public toilets in the vicinity. The town has a good selection of local shops , supermarkets and bars/cafes - including your usual souvenire shopping areas.
From the Hotel make your way to the beach - turn left and look up to the headland as far as you can see. This will take you through Vale do Lobo ; all this beach area is lovely - there are "facilities" at Dunas Dourads its about an hour and fifteen minute walk. About half way there is a Lake , which is also a nice walk. Follow the path off the beach around the lake and it brings you back to the main road either back to Lidl or the Hotel.
A"tip" for shopping is buy cigarettes etc in resort as the airport is more expensive.
Overview for us ; we were Ok with what we got for what we paid , we had excellent weather for the time of year and the good company we had for the duration of our holiday helped make the holiday that much more enjoyable.

Room Tip: Higher corner rooms have two balconies therefore road and sea views

We were B&B only, breakfast was more than adequate. Rooms tidied and cleaned every day laundry changed frequently(3 times in 1 week). Reception very helpful. Hotel position good gave us the option beaches with a little solitude or company if required handy for shops and supermarkets with lots of eating places neaby.

Good location close to the beach,Very flat, great for limited mobility like me. Hotel is clean and staff very friendly,,,but the food was not as good. One complaint I do have is the beds,,they are as hard as rock,,,other guests also complained about sore backs. The all inclusive stops at 10pm and they also close the bar. No entertainment, but I went in late march so not sure about high season. I would go back to this hotel if something was done in the food dept.

Room Tip: Please, please get some softer beds

OK the rooms are clean, the lifts work but .... we found the staff to be a little surly with rare smiles. The food varied between good and awful. Even the good was often cool or cold. The Ban Marie's not working properly, great salads though. The all inclusive is very limited to a set few bottles or the single beer pump and closes exactly at 10pm. The worst part for us was to go to breakfast at 9.01am to find the food vanished as it was the day the clocks went forward. Quite a lot of others missed breakfast too. How easy to put a notice up reminding everyone. The continual loud music from the TV was distracting too. Overall a score of about 3/10. And yes you guessed, we will not be returning to this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony and go high.

Hotel Atismar is a friendly clean hotel that has it's faults. The good bits are that the rooms are clean and spacious with a TV, it's close to the sea and quiet. The staff are friendly and helpful and speak good English. Food is a mixed bag, breakfast was good with plenty of choice and as we were on half board we only got to see the evening meal and that had issues. On two evenings the food was inedible so we ate out. The rooms do not have a kettle or brew kit so take your own and finally the beds are firm, by that I mean you would be just as comfortable sleeping on the floor. As I said you get what you pay for and this was cheap so I've no real complaints, however if I was paying summer prices I would come away with a lower review.

I stayed at the Atismar for 5 nights during mid-March 2014 on a bed and breakfast basis.

I selected the Hotel based on its location, just one block from an excellent beach and promenade and just a 5 minute walk from the Bus Station with its connections to other Algarvean resorts.

I was checked in by a friendly receptionist and allocated a room on the fourth floor at the back of the hotel. The room didn’t have a balcony but the window opened to let some air in. The room was pretty basic but with comfortable twin beds and an en-suite bathroom with walk in shower.

However, cleanliness left a lot to be desired and the room and bathroom (and some public areas of the hotel) felt grubby and in need of a good clean.

Breakfast was taken in a ground floor dining room and comprised a small selection of not particularly appetising hot and cold food but decent machine coffee.

The lounge and bar were comfortable and drinks were inexpensive and the regular barman (I think his name was Sebastian) was friendly and efficient.

Of note; the staff in the hotel were either very friendly, or surly to the point of being ignorant. There wasn’t a compromise.

The popular saying that you get what you pay for is particularly true of this hotel with a twin bedded room with breakfast costing a little over £11 a night for the time of year. However, the hotel looks tired and grubby and despite the price I won’t be staying there again.

This is an objective and honest review based entirely on my own experience and ultimately I expect people to make their own minds up.
