We stayed here around 3 years ago before the refurbishment and last time we were in a city view room. This time round we upgraded to a seaview room and our first impression was that the room seemed much smaller than the cheaper city view room. In fact we really did feel cramped in the room and although the view is spectacular you can see nothing if you sit down at the table and chairs on the balcony, having to stand up to get the lovely views! There is little storage and drawer space in the room and only a shower, which was disappointing, but I guess you don't spend too much time in the room.

The last time I reviewed this hotel I mentioned that a couple of the Receptionists are quite abrupt and unhelpful. This was the case again, only 2 people spoil it for the rest and the name badges are so small that you cannot read their names! We reported that our hairdryer was not working. The receptionist tried to accuse us of not putting on the side switch, which we had done. Nothing happened so we reported it again in the evening to a different female receptionist - the same thing, had we switched it on properly?!! Again nothing happened. They don't seem to make a note or input problems into the system and it was only by writing a letter with a third request that the problem was resolved and a new hairdryer fitted.

Early check in - no chance. Our flight was changed and we knew we would be arriving at hotel just before 10.00 a.m. We had emailed them well in advance (no acknowledgement) and offered to pay extra to secure the room as we left home at 0230 hours, so were pretty tired. The receptionist (the same one who we had first reported the hairdryer problem) seemed to take great delight in informing us that we could not get until 2.00 p.m. They won't budge on this telling us the hotel was fully booked and indeed we saw loads of other people dressed in their travelling clothes waiting for 2.00 p.m. check-in. We cannot help but wonder if the hotel has worked out that if we don't go to our rooms we gather instead for food and drink to pass the time!!

Having said all that the pro's outweigh the con's and mostly this is because of the situation of the hotel, though be warned that sunbeds are 14 euro's per day for 2 beds, rather steep, we feel. Food choice and quality is of a very good standard. The Restaurant staff are very polite and obliging, always happy and smiling.

We visited for a week arriving 15/6/13 on a B&B basis. The hotel could not be in a better place, literally out of the back door onto the prom the 20 yards to the golden beach. Stroll either left or right along the ptomaine and there are enough bars and restaurants to keep you happy. Inside the hotel was very clean, the staff very friendly and helpful, our room with a sea view (well worth the extra) was small with a balcony but very functional, air con, tv no fridge tho. Breakfast buffet was fine, happy hour in the bar (2100 to 2200) was very good. Only down side was that the pool area was a little small. We would go back to this hotel for a break.

This was our second time at the Dom Jose and we enjoyed ourselves again, there are a few good and bad things to note:
1. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room.
2. The Bar is very good but at busy times you can wait a while to get served, but the food is very good and the happy hour drinks discount is very good (half price drinks)
3. The beach parasols and beds are a good investment €14 a day. I'd say nicer than sitting by the pool.
The rooms are clean and a nice place to stay, however try to avoid a room close to the lifts. English TV channels for us brits is a bonus. In the bathroom we had there was no bath but a very nice shower.

We found a local English bar called Fantasia, very good full English (better than the hotels) and their happy hour is very good, buy one get one free drinks which are cheaper than the hotel to start with it worked out at 75 cents (about 66p) for a glass of wine and a little less for beer.
Pizzeria Mammamia is also a good place to eat.

A visit to Vilamoura marina is a must, its a good 30 minute walk but well worth it. Vilamoura Marina is full of bars and restaurants.

I'm sure we'll be back again!!

Just returned 15th June with my partner we went for the half board option.

Good points!

Staffs are friendly and helpful on reception.
Hard working cleaners made the appearance of the hotel look a high standard.
Clean towels everyday,
Bathroom very clean
Breakfast very good ****, cereals, English cooked breakfast, yogurts, fresh melon & pineapple to top up and bread and jams, cheese etc. coffee, juise, water
Evening meal good variety for vegetarians menu displayed everyday.Pedro working meal times very polite young man!!
Repair was fixed ASAP
Pool was cleaned and maintained everyday
Excellent location lots of cheap shops along the promenade

Bad points not many!

Hotel charge for small bottled water for the evening meal costs 3 Euros each. We don’t see why we should pay for this whilst eating. Many couples on a budget went with out drink with there meal.
No kettle or fridge in the room. This would be a bonus
Pool was very small to accommodate customers, there was a lot of daytime noise coming from the hotel roof contractors were upgrading the mini golf area grinding and banging all day during this week. The beach area adjacent to the hotel was managed by the hotel charge 14 Euros per couple for use of loungers. This should be free to customers to use the beach especially if contractors are disturbing our holiday. The beach in front of the hotel was barely used due to cost; maybe cheaper price could be implemented.

Room Tip: Ask for top floor

I am writing this review on behalf of my parents.. They stayed at this hotel for a week in June. Here's their review. We are a older couple and this hotel made our holiday perfect. The room was spotlessly clean, and very comfertable. The location was amazing, right on beach front, with lovely prom to walk along, it is a beautiful relaxing place to visit.
May we thank the reception staff for being very helpful.
If you do eat out try the Joker pub, a lovely English Pub serving homemade food.
We will definitely return to the Dom Jose, hopefully September.

myself and my dad have just returned from the dom jose hotel in quarteria after booking in for 10 days 5th june -14th june .we both had a fantastic holiday, the hotel was spotless the maids worked really hard and every one we spoke to spoke back, some staff it was hard to get them to understand but the majority did ok .. the rooms were a bit on the small size and lacking in storage space /draws but spotless clean bedding, towels, floors . the bathroom was beautiful ! you can hire a safety deposit box from reception for 10 euros but you do get that back when you check out ,..we were only on bed and breakfast as neither of us eat that much so what was on offer was sufficient :tea, coffee, milk ,orange juice, pineapple juice, toast, jams preserves ,rice crispies ,cornflakes. muesli, mixture of fresh fruit ,yogurts and hot ,beans or mushrooms, scrambled egg ,fried egg ,sausage, bacon and grilled tomato , all we quickly re filled if empty , you can have an evening meal for 13.50 euros(3 course ) or they serve snacks in afternoon in the bar area which we tried and they were very nice specialy the tuna sandwiches and tuna and feta cheese salad ..the entertainment could be better but you can find good entertainment in vilamoura ,lots for the younger ones ,the pool is small but deep (I wouldnt recommend it for the younger ones or those not a strong swimmer) the beautiful beach is a stones throw from the hotel so that was used a lot by familys and they life guards on duty all day .there are plenty of little shops all along the front, and bars cafes ,restraunts ice cream parlours The front is all flat and pedestrianized so I found it ideal as since suffering from a stroke I am in a wheel chair 99% of the time so this is totally suitable for wheel chair users/ the disabled .we found a lovely pub for our sunday lunch lovely roast beef or lamb ,chicken pork all served with fresh local veg and a good Yorkshire pudding ! drinks were cheap too a pint of lager was 2 euros it was called FANTASIA and it was just along from the dom jose hotel ,You can walk into vilamoura which is a lovely place ,great to sit around the harbour and it only takes approx a 15-20 minute walk to get there, One other good thing is it only about 20 minutes drive from the airport, .All in all this could easily be a 4 star hotel it just needs 1 or 2 "tweeks" this hotel and resort was so great we are booking up to go again in august or September if we can get in ! I am sorry for the long review but there is so much to comment on ,,all good ,We would highly recommend this hotel ,pay the little extra for a sea view and balcony it is well worth it ,we were on floor 3 overlooking the pool ,one other tip for the ladies there is no dressing table mirror so I took a hand mirror but bought a bigger one in town for only 3 euro

Room Tip: pay that little extra for a balcony and sea view.., room 318 was a good room :)
