Canico Bay

My husband and I travelled to the Canico Bay Club expecting to enjoy a lovely week in Madeira, which is what we had paid Bonus Weeks for, only to find the accommodation, which was basic but acceptable at first glance, totally unsuitable as the entire apartment was enveloped in an all pervading, revolting odour. On checking further we realised that the plumbing in the bathroom went straight to the sewers with no u-bends in the plumbing anywhere, which meant all odours were coming straight back up the pipes into the bathroom and into the entire apartment.

We had other complaints too. Firstly the swimming pool (very small, more of a plunge pool) was filthy. Dead flowers and leaves floating not just on the top but also all over the bottom of the pool and this wasn't cleaned until the 6th day of our holiday - the day before we were leaving. We were also only given 4 wire hangers for clothes for two of us for one week and the pillows (only two very small ones) inside the pillow cases were sweat stained and disgusting.

We were forced to check into a nearby hotel because we were both sickened by the noxious smell and the lack of swimming pool usage, and this cost us over 400 euros. We informed Bonus Weeks of the situation by email from this hotel, called The Royal Orchid - very lovely, and they denied all responsibility and said that it was in the Terms and Conditions that no refunds would be paid. In other words, they can send you anywhere they like and then just deny any responsibility. We will never use Bonus Weeks again.

We enjoyed staying at the Canico Bay Appartments. The studio has a lot of space, it was clean and pleasantly furnished and decorated. At the spacious balcony there is a beautiful view on the left side to the coast and sea. On the other side the view is blocked by a four star hotel. There are good and reasonable priced restaurants nearby (within 100 meters) and a Spar supermarket across the road selling basic items, but very few fresh vegetables and fruits. The sea is about a 100 meter walk down, but not suitable to swim. About 300 meter further on along the coast is a crowded sea pool for swimming or the possibility to swim in the open sea for very experience swimmers. The only problem with the apartment is that the reception is always closed. The only contact is through the friendly room maid who works in the morning on working days. There was no wifi, but most of the café and restaurants nearby have free wifi for clients. The key was on under the doormat when we arrived and we had to pay the apartment in cash Euros to the maid.

Room Tip: As far as I could note it all rooms are pretty similar in term of views and noise level. The rooms a...

Take no notice of the earlier comments, we really liked staying here. We were told that the ownership has changed since the previous comments were made. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the lady was there 8am to 3pm every day except Sunday. They arranged an extra bed for us. There were two hot plates, with pans, sieves, knives etc provided. The bathroom was not the most recent but it did have a bath not just a shower. The outside areas were planted up with roses.

We stayed in the two lower flats that look out across the road to the Royal Orchid hotel, but also over the sea and along the coast. The kids loved the little swimming pool. Upstairs was a sunbathing terrace and at the top a little roofed sitting area.

Opposite the top entrance is a parade of shops, at which you could get discounts but we always forgot the card. We loved the cafes, and the 'mini-market' opens with the tasty local bread at 8am but can run out quickly. The Spar opened at 9am and was a little expensive but we only ever found one other supermarket near the Funchal bus station. You catch the bus at the stops on the road above the one with the Spar on. To find the place, follow the signposts to the Spar, park in the bays just before the parade with the Spar on, and look for a little wooden gate.

Room Tip: Bottom floor apartments have balconies facing Royal Orchid hotel and you just see eachother. Next f...

We stayed here at the beginning of March. Accommodation actually fine, the apartment very spacious for two, looked freshly painted and clean, the bathroom was clean but a bit dated. The balcony could do with making more private some how, not too keen on the openness here. The key was under the doormat on arrival as the reception was closed - in fact we only saw it open once in the whole week! The cleaner came in on day two and never again, not even to empty the bins. We don't expect 5 star hotel service but the service we had was rather poor.
Another issue was we had to clean all the crockery, pots, pans & cutlery. Obviously not been checked from the previous occupants (not good). Washing up liquid not provided nor is a dish cloth or scouring sponge! (Take your own).
In general the place was OK - just needs a little bit of attention here and there
We would stay here again but there are better choices out there

We stayed her for a week in late October. The accomodation was basic but acceptable. The service was poor, actually nonexistent. The reception was always closed. The TV remote didn't work. When we called Ricardo he put in new batteries pronto - but we shouldn't have had to ask, he should have ensured all was working. When we said we couldn't work out how to operate the microwave he brought us a manual in English - but we shouldn't have had to ask, it should have been there anyway. The cleaners just made the bed and did nothing else - but nothing was provided for us to wash up with, we had to buy a sponge and washing up liquid, there was no cloth of any description to wipe surfaces (we had to use one of the towels), not even a broom to sweep up (the cleaners certainly didn't hoover). There was an ironing board but no iron, nor a hairdryer. We actually quite liked not being in Funchal for a change, Canico de Baixo has some nice restaurants and there is a Spar opposite the Club which stocks most things except fresh food, which didn't really matter because we usually ate out. And going into Funchal on the bus was quite fun, the busstop is nearby and the fare is €2.10.

We booked this hotel through expedia.co.uk . when we arrived was a message on reception door to call Ricardo Santos Silva but the mobile was off. After 2 or 3 hours waiting with kids 3 and 6 years old came up a cleaner who said our studio was double booked and didn't know about the kids . so we had to Camacha where he has very old house (Quinta da portada branca) not enough external lights ,no one to show us, the keys was under doormat we had to find a solution for ours kids to sleep with us room too small for both of us.
we had to live this nightmare for 4 days .
Back to canico bay the only staff we meet was this cleaner who did everything she could to make our stay little bit better.
So think twice if you think to book this place.

we have just returned from this supposed 4 star property I would not reccomend it. it was tired and dirty lacked basic equipment including cork screw & there was evidence of mice in the kitchen cupboards. there was no one on site to complain to and there was no cleaning at all. Please do not go there!
