“We had a wonderful time at the Riu Palace Hotel Madeira loved it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

Our first time on the Island of Madeira and it didn't disappoint in the least the Hotel was just a short drive from the Airport and upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of Madeira wine and friendly reception staff who despite the numbers processed us quickly and courteously, and whilst we were waiting for our cases to be deposited in our room sent us to the restaurant for a drink and Lunch one of many we really enjoyed.
When we got to our room it was fantastic we had been given room 1501 a large bedroom two double beds dresser and flat screen TV, sitting room dresser settee comfy chair and flat screen TV, separate dressing room (loads of hanging rails and drawers for your clothes and belongings) with large bathroom linked to a toilet and bidet room, from the main bedroom the large patio doors led on to a large balcony not with a sea view but quiet looking up the hill all very clean not modern style but very classy I believe.
The location of the Hotel is just of the Sea with lovely sea views and a short walk to a little harbor area with a cafe bar and diving school not the place to go if you want to go out on a night and let your hair down but Funchal is accessible during the day on the free Hotel shuttle bus and also by public transport just outside the hotel entrance and is well worth the visit, we went three times whilst we were there and had a wonderful time.
Food at this hotel is some of the best I’ve had in an all-inclusive hotel for a long time we and a lovely table for our evening meals and lunch time was often spent out on the terrace in the sun, to start the day breakfast choice was wide fresh and tasty queuing was not a problem and the omelettes fresh and made to your liking. Lunch time could be a snack by the pool or as we mostly did eaten on the terrace delicious, the evening meals were by far the icing on the cake starters made individually and with lots of taste attention to detail and very fresh with lots of salads and cold cuts too. Mains consisted of fresh Paella, Pasta, and Risotto, Sea food always fresh and cooked in different ways with or without sauces, and for the carnivores the choice was excellent Steak, joints of beef, Pork and lamb a different joint on the carvery every night all well cooked and flavorsome backed up with a fine choice of vegetables and breads.
Drinks in the bar were all branded and served by friendly knowledgeable staff cocktails were limited on the all inclusive menu but beer was always available Super Bok as I recall, the wine was served by the glass in the Restaurant and was very palatable but we never had to wait too long for a refill, If I have any complaint about the Hotels drinks it was that from 6.00pm on-wards it was not possible to get a drink around the pool and as we were on the late sitting it would have been nice to stay by the pool a little longer into the evening with a drink or two, the main Bar was open but sitting in it in swimwear was not the done thing maybe as the Season moves on this may change.
The Riu Palace is a lovely Hotel with very attentive and friendly staff with excellent food and drinks not the most raucous and the entertainment needed more variety and added excitement to get the guests more involved and participating but as we were there for a quiet relaxing time it was adequate, all in all though we had a lovely time and left relaxed if not a little heavier after eating all that great food we will be returning soon I hope soon PBV.

Room Tip: Try to get a Sea view but not essential we didn't and still had a lovely room.

Pros: Excellent Staff who are always very attentive and eager to please. The attitude of the staff is amongst the best I've encountered in any hotel, and we stay in lots of hotels. Good Buffet with an excellent selection of food, with only a few very small areas needing improvement (detailed below). Free 20 minute bus ride to Funchal City. Overall Excellent value for money, we would definitely return.

Cons: SWIMMING POOLS: The two very inviting swimming pools are absolutely freezing, they are not heated, they literally take your breath away, it takes a long while for your body temperature to regulate itself to make the pools bearable. And even then it's only possible to stay in the pools for a short time. This is a BIG let down as for a lot of people (myself included) the pool is one of the main reasons I go on holiday, lie in the sun, go in the pool, you get the idea... There is an indoor pool which is either heated or the room is warm enough to keep it bearable, but there was no lights on in the room, the room was very dull due to this and with no music playing through the pool rooms speakers and we were left with a very uninviting experience.
BUFFET: Only 2 things wrong with the buffet, I didn't eat any red meat during my entire stay as it was very under cooked. Some were red inside, some literally had blood dripping off it. That might be ok for some people, but not for me. This had been pre cooked so I had no option to advise I wanted it well done. A good vet could have gotten the meat back on it's feet.
The fish for the most part was excellent, Sea Bass, Grouper, Saithe, ect. Occasionally it had bones in it, not one or two, but a lot as it hadn't been de boned properly. On one occasion trout was served with the entire rib cage still in it. Even after removing this which is easy to do, there were bones left. But again, overall the fish was very good.
Beds: A bit hard with a air conditioning fan a bit noisy and not very effective.

Despite the negatives above I would have given the hotel 4 out of 5 as it is a very good hotel (and I'm very fussy), but 3 out of 5 will get noticed and they might actually do something about it. The outdoor pools at the very least should be temperature controlled so they are pleasant to be in as it was the biggest let down.

The transfer to this hotel is quick and stress-free. On arrival guests are welcomed with a glass of Madeira wine - a nice touch. I can't fault this hotel - staff, service, room, entertainment and choice of food are all excellent.
While there, it was my 60th birthday and hotel staff went out of their way to make the day special. On returning to our room after a morning out, there was a bottle of champagne. At dinner, our table was strewn with fresh flower petals and there was a red candle burning. As if that wasn't enough, halfway through the meal the waiters left their posts to come and sing 'Happy Birthday'. That was a bit embarrassing at the time but has given me happy memories of the day.
The All Inclusive option at this hotel proved a very good deal. We were given a safe for the week, unlimited bottles of water for our room, towels for sunbeds and practically all branded drinks were included.
The only downside of staying in this hotel was outwith everyone's control- the wind! Being on the Atlantic coast was a contributing factor. The wind was forceful and often cold. Sensible people had brought fleeces. It didn't spoil our holiday though. There was always a sunny spot within the hotel to take refuge.
Top tip - Don't be fooled if it's overcast. You can still be burned. If the worst happens, there are plenty aloe vera plants in and around the hotel grounds. Use the juice of a leaf directly on to the affected skin for instant relief.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to others. Without the wind, the holiday would have been perfect.

Room Tip: The room we had was on Floor 5. It looked straight out on to the ocean but there was little if any...

Some room for improvement but also some excellent features

Practicalities: Wifi 60 minutes per day per device in the lobby bar (so if you have a smartphone and a tablet take both and you get 2 hours). Hotel wifi is 20eu a week otherwise. For AI guests free safe, bottled water and pool towels. Transfer – about 15 mins. Check in – quick and they give you a glass of Madeira together with pool towel cards and safe instructions. You are also asked to pick dinner shifts.

Location : A short, nice prom by the sea with a cafe at one end. Shop across the road and a short row of shops, car hire, a Spar and a restaurant just up the hill. But that's it.

Getting about : Bus stop across the road. The 155 goes into Funchal roughly hourly at 2eu20 each way (note the route involves a fair bit of going up and down which is alarming at first). A 155E motorway service goes a couple of times a day in each direction. The hotel runs a free bus service into Funchal but it's timed in such a way that if you use it you can't have lunch in the hotel – deliberate penny pinching on the hotel's part. We found the optimal combination was to get the 08:30E service in and then the 1230 or 1330 155 back. There's plenty to do in Funchal, it's a great city. There are no other buses and it's very difficult to see anything more of the Island but the area around the hotel and Funchal. If we go back we shall hire a car. The buses are fine if you only want to go the Funchal. Local bus runs until midnight. Taxi rank outside the next hotel.

Room : Nice spacious room. Clean with nice balcony. Fridge. TV only had a few English Channels (no BBC1 or 2). Deckchairs and mats for them. No tea/coffee facilities so if you need them take a travel kettle. Maid service excellent.

Food : Breakfast – the usual selection. Crap bacon. Cava everyday. No sign of omelettes which might have been nice. Note they tell you breakfast doesn't start until 8am but if you are happy with continental breakfast plus eggs you can go in earlier (and then catch the 0830 express bus into Funchal). Lunch – excellent. Plenty of choice, leisurely and relaxed. Dinner : We disliked intently the 1830 and 2030 shifts for dinner as neither time suited us and they close the doors at 1845 so you can't get in. Unless you are lucky enough to get an isolated table the tables are close together. But the main problem of this way of doing things is that everyone wants the same course at the same time so you get queues and the staff preparing that course get overwhelmed. And despite this the staff still take your plate away before you are finished – any sign of inactivity and it's gone. Plenty of choice, though there was repetition – we had hake 4 times in a week for example. Fish was disappointing for an island in mid Atlantic. Caviar one night.

Drinks : Beer is draught Super Bock 5.1% ABV but only available for AI in 200ml glasses in the bars though they will give you 400ml with meals. Included with AI is 300ml bottles of the local Coral lager and (never seen this before) the low alcohol version of Super Bock. But I found all the beer too fizzy and generally unpleasant. Both Coral and Super Bock brew a stout which is excellent but not available in the hotel sadly. Wine – the white is fine. The red was like Ribena and the rose poor. We discovered that wine in Madeira costs around 1eu a bottle which is perhaps why they give you loads at dinner. But note it is all bottled wine and not out of plastic box. Cocktails – huge range for AI. Spirits and not measured and are branded. So it you fancy a large Johnny Walker Red Label you can have one on AI (it would otherwise be 7eu). Never seen this before.

Entertainment : Very little in the way of daytime activities. Piano and sax in the lobby bar from around 1930 – 2015 – but the roof in the lobby bar is low and it's acoustically dreadful. I felt sorry for the players. Then 2030 – 2130 the band play – exact band varies as some people have days off. They are quite good – good range but inevitably over 7 days some repetition. At 2130 there's a show. These varied – we most loved the University Singers – 14 blokes in uni gowns – was like something out of Monty Python. Some dance shows which were OK. Parrot show was very miss-able. Nice function room with bar.

Rep – pleasant, friendly and helpful Thomson rep – Lorraine – many thanks.

Staff – very friendly and helpful. The odd surly one (usually in the pool bar) but the majority are excellent.

Generally : This is a nice hotel well worth it's four stars with glimmers of 5 star. AI well worth while. The clients are almost entirely elderly (70 plus) (mainly German) and things are arranged to suit them. So this helps explain the shift system for meals. And the reliance on waiter service for just about everything except buffet food. If you are young or have children then this probably isn't a hotel for you (unless you want to drink all day, and in which case you should be well pleased with the first class range of AI drinks). The location counts against it, but if you are happy to lounge by the nice pools, take excursions or go to Funchal and you don't mind the predominantly elderly guests then this hotel is perfectly suited to you. Book it at once before it gets more expensive.

Room Tip: Higher is better

We arrived in the afternoon just in time for lunch, excellent choices for food and drink on an all inclusive basis. The service was excellent throughout our stay, reception couldn't do enough for us. At reception, which no one told us about, you can get maps of the area, information sheets and it is where you have to book the shuttle bus to Funchal but dont forget to get a ticket or you may get thrown off the bus. Car hire was locally sourced from Insularcar at there office near The Royal Orchid Hotel, a few minutes walk away; and they take cash so no need to leave your card details! Driving around the island is no bother as it is only slightly bigger than the Isle of Man. Park in Funchal in the car park near to the bus drop off point and where you can catch the 155 bus to and from the hotel for 2.10e each. Will definately visit this beautiful island again, if only to enjoy the landing at the airport again!! Oh and If you like a softer bed, ask for a topper by email.

Room Tip: Ask for a high level, pool view. West for morning sun, east for evening sun.

The Riu Palace Madeira is really a lovely hotel. We stayed on the all inclusive basis and wanted for nothing. Good food and plenty of variety (including lots of choice for my 16 month old daughter), a variety of drinks available all day (soft drinks, juices, beers, wine, spirits and cocktails). The staff work hard to ensure everyone is enjoying themselves.

There is entertainment on all the time, but it's not entrusive.

We had a room on the fourth floor. It was very comfortable, and surprisingly large for a hotel room. This was a corner room and had a double sized balcony. Fully enclosed and with shade during the day, this provided a safe place for my daughter to play.

The only downside to our holiday was that I got ill with a vomiting and diarrhoea bug. I ended up spending a day in bed, unable to eat or even to keep water down. I had painful stomach cramps all day. The hotel staff were very considerate while I was unwell. I was telephoned a few times to check how I was, and offered room service. When I felt better and was up and about the staff ensured I had a cold drink at all times. The Thomson rep was helpful too.
Unfortunately it transpired that I was not the only guest to fall ill. In fact six people, all from different parties, had the vomiting and diarrhea bug. The hotel staff tried hard to limit the spread by encouraging everyone to use antibacterial hand wash before entering the restaurant.

The bug didn't spoil my holiday, but it definitely reduced my enjoyment! I don't blame the hotel and I'd still recommend a stay at the Riu Palace Madeira.

We arrived early afternoon and were greeted with the Riu tradition a sample of the local Maderian wine.Needless to say 1 led to 2.Our luggage was taken to our room and was there before we were. The evening meal (long trousers gents) was just brilliant, spoilt for choice as there was two cold service stations, the main hot station along with specialized show cooking. The evening entertainment was varied with a special act followed by the resident groups. The bar staff did an amazing job, keeping up with all the orders that the waiters were taking at the tables and the drinks that you ordered being accompanied by a serving of peanuts.
All in all a brilliant break and will go again in the not too distant future.

Room Tip: Ask for room over looking the pool but with a sea view in block No 1 it may cost a little more but i...
