“Amazing a peace of heaven”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2011

We just returned from a holiday at the Quinta Spendida in Canico - The hotel was amazing we stayed on self catering basis and loved the hotel the surroundings and staff where very helpful and friendly . The hotel is away from the sea but has amazing views across the ocean and the grounds are so peaceful and tranquil you almost feel you the only ones around.. We had mixed weather and used the spa in the hotel for E5 per person it is nice but a little over priced ... The hotel is also a perfect place to explore the island and the nearby sea pools are only a short bus ride away and Funchal the capital is about 20 mins on the 155 bus and about E2 the buses run ever hour from outside the bakery ... The small town has some delightful restaurants and the restaurant Central is a great place to try a Brazilian Carvery for about E12 per person ...

One of the best vacation for me and my family (two children 6 and 10)
Location of the Hotel is great and the garden is simply fantastic.
Hotel is quiet , even when there are children in the pool , our apartment was very clean well equipped and nicely isolated. We did not took breakfast, because just 5 min ahead there is a very good bakery were they served fantastic naturally fermented bread.
Restaurants for dinner are ok the one cheaper but very good and the second in the old villa , more expensive but with the marveled food . Very close to the hotel there are also two very good restaurants serving a typical Portuguese dishes.
Very good place if you are tiered with the big resorts
If we will decide to go Madeira once again( which is very much possible , because we loved this island) for sure we will go to Quinta Splendida again

Stayed here for a wedding and family holiday.

The rooms are spread out around a botanical garden which is really stunning - great for photographers! The outdoor pool can be cold but very nice and has a shallow end for children. Generally seems to cater to older German tourists but staff are very friendly and multi-lingual so English was never a problem and everyone was accomodating and welcoming to our children. Our room had a very large bed (2 small doubles together) plus a sofa bed and a travel cot provided. Facilities were simple but perfectly reasonable.

The breakfast buffet was varied and very nice and the three different restaurant options onsite offer very good quality food but can be a little pricey. Our appartment had a kitchenette and there is a supermarket next door so simple self-catering is possible. There is also a lovely bakery and a good restaurant on the same street in the village. The resort spa is very good and worth a splurge. Generally a lovely place to stay and no complaints at all. Would love to go back!

The Quinta Splendida Jardim Botanico is set in beautiful gardens with a fantastic view out to sea. It is about 4 or 5 miles from the airport on the way to Funchal and the town of Canico has some lovely pastelarias (fantastic cakes) and cafes as well as a couple of decent supermarkets. There is a very good spa onsite in which you can use the indoor pool, sauna, steam room, hot beds etc for a daily fee of 17.50 euros. The spa offers massage and other holistic and beauty treatments at prices I would expect to pay in a big city like London or Edinburgh. The staff there are very friendly and efficient and there was a nice feel about the place.
The outdoor pool and the surrounds are reasonably well cared for and are surrounded by the pretty gardens.
There is a car park at the hotel which you have to pay 2 euros per day to park in and a couple of times we had difficulty squeezing our tiny hire car into the last space!
The accomodation comprises of rooms and bungalows set around the gardens with little patios or gardens each containing your own sun lounger and table and chairs.
This all sounds idyllic so far and it was until we were shown our one bedroomed apartment near the pool. We were overcome by a very damp, musty smell on entry to the apartment and could tell it wasn't the kind of smell that was going to go away quickly so we asked to be given another room. We were then shown a one bedroom bungalow apartment which didn't smell and on the surface seemed ok so we settled in that night being tired from travelling.
The room fell far below our expectations of a resort of this standard. The furniture was old and worn, the beds were extremely hard, the fridge was old with a broken handle and only one shelf on the inside of the door and there was no toaster or microwave. There was a hob and oven but I never find these of any use in a holiday apartment?
The bathroom tiles were old and cracked and the grout was dirty and mouldy in places. The shower was old also but there was ample hot water and the towels were changed daily if you left your used ones on the floor.
We had to report an infestation of ants around the kitchen area and had to throw out some foodstuffs despite having put them in a high cupboard and also one of the cupboards in the bedroom had ants.
The housekeeping staff were good in as much as the room was cleaned daily and the beds made up.
We had booked through RCI ( timeshare exchange) and were informed on arrival that we would have an extra 98 euros to pay for a maintenance and utility fee to the hotel. I feel that the accomodation itself was very basic, uncomfortable and tired although the grounds and facilities of Quinta Splendida were excellent. We were offered an upgrade to a new spa room but would have had to pay an extra 40 euros per day which was apparently discounted!
The weather was mixed and I know that this can colour how you feel about a holiday but we were extremely dissapointed with the rooms and all the reception staff could say when we gave them our completed questionaire was that we should have complained and maybe we could have tried another room.

We booked a good value hotel selection Studio . The room was vast, clean , quiet and had an adequate kitchenette for self catering . There is a great bakery up the road and a good supermarket so you can do as you want . Breakfast , if you have room only , is E17 !
As others have said , unless you have the package everything such as the swimming pool at E5 a day is extra, parking is E2 per day. But, in it's own great gardens with good restaurants in Canico and at the Quinta I would recommend it. A little disturbance was caused by the festival at end January which had seriously loud music on for 2 nights until 1.30 am , but the locals had a good time but otherwise the Quinta was quiet.

I don't normally like staying at large hotels booked through travel agents, but as this was a great special offer in November, I decided to plump for it based on great reviews.
Fortunately the design of the hotel, with multiple, buildings, none more than 3 storeys tall and set on a terraced hill means that it doesn't feel as big as it is, you can never see more than, say, 20 rooms from any one place.

Some of the hotel (restaurant, spa) has obviously been recently refurbished, whereas our basic room had not, but it was still spacious, comfortable and clean.

Amenities are great, choice of four restaurants, including a very well priced 5-star restaurant, small gym, free sauna and jacuzzi, and 5-star spa facilities which are reasonably priced. The pool is spectacularly located near the edge of a small cliff, meaning that as you swim you can see out into the brilliantly blue Atlantic ocean,

Only downside: it is neither at a beach or in a buzzing town, although it is in a village which has a couple of stores, cafes and restaurants if you want to leave the hotel complex. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend Madeira at all if you need a lovely sandy beach or happening nightlife.

We have just returned from a week's holiday at the wonderful Quinta Splendida. The holiday was to celebrate my husband's birthday. We booked a studio room and it was lovely and spacious and very well equipped. Outside we had a covered verandah with table and chairs and then infront of these we had a small garden with our own sun beds. The garden overlooked the pool to the front and the Atlantic ocean to the side. The weather was very mild, about 19/20c with only one day of rain. The food was plentiful and fresh, with lots of choice for both breakfast and dinner. We had a super celebratory meal in the La Perla on my husband's birthday. We spent a couple of days in the spa and came back to the UK feeling totally revitalised.
