“Nice room but didn't get the 'sea view' we paid for!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

The room was spacious, nice and comfortable. But we were put in the annex across the road of the hotel after paying extra for a sea view. Our view was of the road and cars. The sea view was there, but only if you strained your neck and looked out. The staff were friendly enough about our complaint, but basically said 'come back tomorrow' regarding the issue. My partner became frustrated with this and decided to go back and say something again, to which they offered us a room on the ground level floor in the main building which wasn't any better - a view of the pool and no privacy. After a couple nights we asked again and were offered a room with a proper sea view but the apartment itself was much less nice and we'd already settled in/unpacked. No refund was offered or apology. Be careful about this issue! But otherwise we had a fantastic stay and the housekeeping staff were friendly and thorough! Thank you to them :) The sea view from the pool area is breathtaking and Canico itself is a nice quiet area - only a 35 minute bus ride from Funchal and there is a bus stop 2 minutes walk from the hotel.

Room Tip: Specific for a room in the main building as much as possible!

We had booked the Roca Mar but when we arrived we were taken to the adjacent hotel, the Tropical: we didn't mind as we got a free sea view room with a kitchenette.
The roo m was spacious and clean but otherwise nothing special and a bit dated.
What makes the hotel memorable are the staff who are outstanding in their helpfulness and courtesy.
We took breakfast at the Roca Mar - excellent hot and cold buffet: we ate dinner there once and though the food was excellent, there was no atmosphere(Large room filled with German tour parties on half board).
We enjoyed the Tropical restaurant, Lee Hamilton's Steak House, where we had several excellent and innovative meals in a very modern restaurant. Meals with wine, brandies etc were about 65 euros which we thought super value in view of the overall quality.
Tropical tends to be empty during the day (assume groups off on organised tours) and we had the swimming pool to ourselves.

The setting of the hotel is great- sea views, peaceful etc but you certainly need to be fit to climb up and down the stairs.
Several restaurants nearby - the best is opposite with a nice sheltered garden and good plain food There is also a good pizzeria past the bus stop on the way uphill to Canico, and the left as the road bends(We went twice and were the only tourists)
We would definitely go back to the hotel.

Hi
we just stay at the tropical for Easter/half term. Since days guests / and we / complain about serious building work during the day. 4 builders with heavy building material break the walls around the indoor pool , probably to enlarge the pool area. Several guests have complained at the reception with no success. The building work stops for 2 hours and then continues. The noise is strong as whole walls are broken and the stones are then carried outside. It is a big project. The noise is very clear to hear in all rooms and unfortunately also at the poolside.
This was not announced to us from the travel agency and we were not warned when we checked in.
Otherwise the staff is friendly. But the rooms and hotel are looking very tired and in need of repair and redecoration. It is good and basic, what we wanted / but without the serious noise.
B. from London during Easter. The noise even continued Easter Monday

Room Tip: do not go until the hotel has been upgraded and work has finished

One week. Lovly swims in a nearly to dangerous sea. That is what I love and need. But sometime I was the only ione that dared to swim.
To shop our food you have to go up up up for nearly one hour. That was not for me.
Difficult to find a parking place. The shops in the little village is very expensive.
But. if you like me loves the sea, this is the place for you. The view is wonderful. The rest is like most hotels.
I love to walk in Maderia so this is the best hotel there for me (with my love for rough sea).

I was invited here by my parents who have had a timeshare here for the past 15 years and my husband and I really enjoyed it. We got one of the newly renovated rooms, which was lovely and clean, had it's own little kitchen, flatscreen tv, big bathroom and nice balcony with beautiful view over the ocean. As Madeira is a volcanic island there is no sand at the sea, but this place has a nice pier with stairs straight into the water, which is great for snorkeling or just a nice swim (though I do recommend bringing your snorkle, fins and mask if you have any). If you are not in to sea water then they also have 1 outside and 1 indie pool, which were nice, refreshing and clean. All the staff were super friendly and helpful and always had a smile ready. Now we know why my parents love this place and keeps coming back for more.

The hotel is located on the cliffs next to the ocean, in a small village with a few restaurants and nothing to do. Hotel has its own minibus service to Funchal, but is limited to 4-8 passengers...
Rooms tired, but spacious and clean. Friendly staff. Restaurant newly renovated, ok food and service, but will rather recommend the restaurant just across the street.
Canico de Baixo only has a 4-5 hotels, restaurants and car rentals, nothing else. Would recommend to stay in the Lido area rather than Canico de Baixo.

This hotel is in a quiet and pleasant area and is in an exceptional location being next to the ocean. Although the room itself was nothing special (it is clean and large enough) the location is exceptional.
We had a Pool view room on the ground floor, picturesque and surrounded by palms. If you are one floor up there is a wonderful unspoilt sea view. You can swim in the (unheated) outdoor pool but what was really exhilarating is to go down stepped access to the sea, where there is ladder access into the sea, which is makes for a delightful swim and is much warmer than the pool. There are various sun lounge areas there too.
The sea here is in a marine reserve and with swimming goggles you can see an array of amazing fish right there and then.
(For £7 euros you can go to the hotal next door, along the coastal path and hire flippers and a mask and snorkel - amazing!)
The other exceptional thing to mention is that the hotal houses an amazing restaurant. You can sit out on a beautiful modern candlelit outdoor balcony area looking over the ocean (or inside if it's chilly) and we found every dish we ordered delicious and beautifully presented. 5* food at a great price.

Room Tip: self-catering meant we could prepare packed lunches for out day outings and either eat out or cook f...
