“A very good, design, elegant and small hotel by the ocean”
Reviewed 1 April 2013

This was my 4rth trip to Madeira and to Ponta do Sol, where I stayed at this great hotel (because the main hotel, Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, was fully booked). It is really nice, great design, big rooms all facing the ocean. Very good bedsheets, safe, flat screen TV, free wifi in the rooms. Breakfast is very good, food as well. You can use all the facilities of the main Hotel (ham am, jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor pool, sauna). Great terrace for a drink, lunch or dinner. Great place to relax, away from the mass tourist crowds. You feel far away though Funchal is only 20 minutes drive. Free transfers to Funchal and excursions.

Room Tip: All of them face the ocean!

We were delighted by the personnel, wonderful people, and although we had problems with the touroperators from the continent, they helped us a lot! We wanted a quiet, nice, romantic place for our honeymoon, and that's what we got! The food of the restaurant was splendid, the bathroom very comfy, the balconies(all with sea view) so retro-romantic!
It's best for couples, no children or big companies really...
The only thing that could bother someone, is that you use the facilities of the big hotel up the hill, but the pleasant walk, elevator and the view from the top are worth it!

Room Tip: Choose higher floors if available, for better view of the small bay.

The location is very nice, and so was the room. Unfortunately, the staff were extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. The same staff work the restaurant and reception, and they were unwilling servers and often unavailable and unhelpful at the front desk. We were very reluctant to ask for any information. I would not stay here again.

On the second night there, we took the hotel van into Funchal for the Christmas market. When we returned with the van, we found the hotel locked up and with no way to get in. We rang the doorbell, but to no avail. We ended up having to walk up to their sister hotel, and someone came and opened up the hotel. We never received an apology nor acknowledgement of their error.

I stayed in this hotel in July and I can only say: "Perfect". Rooms are very stylish and clean, food is delicious and personnel is friendly. I would recommend it for your summer vacations - maybe is not appropriate for families with small kids, because in the evening music from beach bars can be loud.

We stayed in DaVila for a week in August. Unfortunately we weren't able to stay the whole two weeks of our vacation since it was already booked (we tried to reserve 3-4 weeks in advance). So i guess it's not the hidden gem any longer and if you want to stay there make sure to reserve well in advance. As mentioned from others before, the rooms are very clean, great bed an linen. The balcony is bid enough for one to sit on there but also just beautiful to enjoy the view from your bed. Parking is available at the hotel (only 3 spaces) or in a nearby closed off tunnel. Only once have we had a problem finding a parking space (Saturday night). The restaurant is good but in high season often crowded (also with locals it seems). Breakfast was great, fresh fruit salad, tomato and cucumbers and real juice are things I don't see that often in middle class hotels. Also everything was refilled immediately during the breakfast hours (8-10 ish) The staff is friendly and helpful and can't say that they were slow or not attending enough.
It was great using the Estalagem facilities, the pool is awesome but you can as well jump in the Atlantic ocean across the street. My tip have dinner during sunset at the Eatalagem it's beautiful. Also on the weekends there are sometimes concerts at the Estalagem with Portuguese musicians. The atmosphere was great.
We would definitely recommend it and come back (and next time reserve more in advance :-))

Really liked it here. Room was fab - big, kind of funky, clean lines, etc. just the way I like it. Really clean, which is a big bonus in my world. Bed v comfortable. Lovey sheets & towels. Can't fault the accommodation at all.
The restaurant was fine. Food was ok. I've tasted better, but also a lot worse. I'd say it lowers the quality of the accommodation, but who am I to reason why.... That being said the staff were really nice, so no quibbles there.
The beach bar across the road serves great food for dinner if you're stuck.
Did not get a huge amount of use of the main hotel up the cliff, but why would you need to with the sea across the road.
All in all I really liked it here and would definitely return.
