My husband, four-year old daughter and I spent several wonderful hours at this well-maintained and child-friendly zoo. In the last two years we have been to countless zoos on the East Coast and Midwest, and the Virginia Zoo is at the top of our list. The lay-out of the zoo is great because it can accomodate large crowds--visitors can disperse in all directions and not feel cramped (there were three large school groups when we were there and we barely noticed them). We especially enjoyed the design of the animal viewing areas because the network of wooden walkways allow visitors to observe the animals from a variety of angles and heights. The landscaping and gardens are superior and the train ride is among the best that we've experienced. We also liked that the zoo offered Radio Flyer wagons with canopies for rent. We will be sure to re-visit this zoo on future vacations!
