“Excellent meal, good surroundings”
Reviewed 18 February 2014 via mobile

Excellent medley of grilled fish served with steamed potatoes and a slice of baked sweet potato, and with a mixed salad. House white wine good. Service a little slow.

“Great location”
Reviewed 10 February 2014

We have been to this restaurant a few times because it's in a great location, it looks modern and trendy but needs to up it's act somewhat. At lunchtime it seems that the large groups of locals that sit inside get all the attention and us tourists who like to sit in the sun get ignored. We had to wait far too long to be served and when we had ordered steak we were given avocado and prawns, we realize there is a language difference but come on.We paid for the wine and left. On the occasions we have had food it was good, otherwise we wouldn't d have returned

“Must try the espada!”
Reviewed 14 January 2014

We initially went to Alte Mare to have a few beers for sundowners and use their free wifi (our holiday house didn't have internet). When it got a little too chilly to sit outside we moved indoors and, having had a good peek at what the diners were getting on their plates, decided to stay for dinner.

My wife had a huge salad for starters. I had the fried prawns. We were both happy with our choices.

Since just about all Madeira restaurant reviewers rave about the the black scabbard fish (espada) I ordered it, while my wife opted for the tuna steak. We asked the very friendly owner if he could recommend a bottle of white wine to go with our fish and he appeared shortly thereafter with a chilled bottle of nice Portuguese wine and an ice bucket.

Our food arrived about twenty minutes later.

I had asked them to serve the passion fruit sauce and banana on a separate plate (wanted to taste just the fish first) and it was without a doubt the best fish I have ever had. Prepared in batter, both fillets were perfectly cooked, moist and butter-soft. I almost gave in to the temptation to eat them just like that, but also wanting to try it the traditional way, skeptically spooned on the fruit combo. Wow! Whoeverdecided that these things should all go together is a culinary genius! I had to stop myself from eating espada at every restaurant we went to on the island.

My wife's tuna steak came covered in a red wine and garlic sauce. We tried each other's food and decided unanimously that mine was the winner. We were both of the opinion that, although the sauce was delicious, her tuna was overcooked. Both our dishes were served with boiled potatoes and broad beans.

We ended off with a kind of chocolate mousse/cake from their little revolving display fridge, which was OK.

All in all the dining experience at Mare Alte was very enjoyable. We found the prices of both the food and drinks reasonable and the staff were very friendly and attentive. A definite recommendation from us.

“Good fish, not cheap”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

We had a quite good fish dinner there. The view is very nice and the service was fine. However the restaurant was just frequented by tourists and the prices were quite high for Madeira. So if you don't mind paying more for q really good fish then enjoy your meal here, otherwise there should be plenty of alternatives.

“Best seafood rice”
Reviewed 18 December 2013

lovely setting overlooking beach and freshest seafood perfectly cooked. The seafood rice is superb, and will often contain local lobster (cavacos)or crab, lapas, prawns, mussels and whatever else is at its best. Portions are large so go easy on the starters!
