About Apulia
The village of Apulia is located in the Green Coast of Portugal, between the city of Povoa de Varzim and the city of Esposende, with a 10.51 km² extension area. This small fishing village became famous for strongly iodized beach and therefore very popular for summer residents in the cities of the North of Portugal, but also by European tourists (French, German, English and Spanish).
However it is not just the beach the main attraction, but especially the cuisine. The fish auction is a highly anticipated site for the people who come to the beach. In the morning, visitors await the coming of the breakwater offshore boats with even live fish (sea bass, octopus, conger eel, crab, seafood, mussels, etc.), willing to negotiate and then take home the flavors of the sea of Apulia.
For the less experienced in the kitchen, Apulia offers a wide zone of restaurants and bars for every taste, from traditional cuisine to delicious grilled meats and seafood, also undergoing lighter meals such as snacks or appetizers.
Mills guarding the beach, are a guide in the surrounding countryside. Next to the beach of Ofir, the beach Apulia sharing an extensive integrated pine forest on the north coast of the Natural Park, which is a true charm of nature to live or who is visiting.
Apulia has one of the best beaches on the north of Portugal, guaranteed by the Blue Flag award by the Association of European Blue Flag. The generosity of its sea, which provides a large body of marine algae, rich in nutrients used by the sites in fertilizing the land, which in turn are quite wealthy, making the region of Apulia in a huge garden full of greenery.
The seaweed collection at sea and fertilizing the land, are a tradition that gave rise to the known Sargaceiros and their folklore. The dances and costumes are an authenticity not found elsewhere. Beautiful and bold, costumes feature very own visual characteristics due to its functionality, since Sargaceiros dance with costumes associated with their work of collecting algae on the beaches of Apulia.
Another attraction in the village is the fair of vegetables and good quality fruits for sale in a makeshift market in Rua dos Sargaceiros on the Largo of the Chapel of Our Lady of Guia.
Accompanied by the Atlantic, Apulia is a land that offers day its fine golden sand and at night, under the calm horizon, the waves produce a melody for those who sees the starry sky.
