There are three one star Michelin restaurants in Portugal: A Feitoria in Belem, The Yeatman in Porto and Il Gallo d'Oro in Funchal. We only happened to visit Il Gallo d'Oro, but this was our best Michelin restaurant experience and also our best meal in Portugal. The time commitment for the tasting menu was quite large: 7:30pm until 11:30pm, but it was a perfect way to end our stay in Porto. The sommelier was always knowledgeable and did not hesitate to go and find a response to our questions. Of course, being Portugal, everyone speaks flawless English. The dining room was not crowded, so there was an atmosphere that felt cozy, but never impersonal as can happen with too many diners. Tip: get there before your reservation and enjoy the sunset on Porto (see photos).

Spectacular! First, we lucked out on weather and it was the most beautiful, mild, and clear night to sit outside and enjoy the absolutely incredible view of Porto. Truly breathtaking. From the moment of arrival, you are taken care of. A glass of port is offered then many welcome amuse bouches were presented beautifully, all unique and with never before tasted flavors. From test tube gazpacho to foie gras lollipops, it was an elegant and sometimes whimsical delight for the eyes and tastebuds! I opted for a tasting menu (gourmet Francesinha - SOLD!) and my partner had the blue lobster rice. Both were excellent, although I would suggest both doing the tasting, as it's a bit choppy when only one has so many courses. Loved everything, including the desserts. Lovely, selection of wines at surprisingly reasonable prices. Service was very nice. Truly a lovely experience. Wanted to enjoy the view some more so had another glass of port and the staff were very kind to stick around for us. As it was a very special occasion, it was well worth the €250, especially for that VIEW!

My husband and I took the Chef's Special Menu, some 10+ courses for 110€ per person - an experience from beginning to end!

Each dish was creative, beautifully presented and - most importantly - delicious.

Service was excellent as well, non-alcoholic cocktails prepared individually and alternatively one could also have very good wines by the glass.

Since the weather was nice and warm we had our table on the terrace, enjoying the view on Porto and the beautiful sunset.

Overall an entirely positive experience!

We had a spectacular meal here with a view across the Douro that was utterly divine. As we watched the sun set over Porto we were presented with a series of dishes that amazed, inspired and delighted in turn. It was not cheap but it was an experience we will remember for many years.

We visited this restaurant on 25th may 2014 for their special Sunday Lunch. The ocst of the meal itself was €45, but obviously the wine pushed the price up quite a bit! However, the food was fantastic (as a Michelin Star Restaurant should be!), with service to match. Fantastic views over the Douro river and I would recommend that those of you who love their food should visit, as its superb and much better value then "O Paprico).
