Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira contributed significantly to the consolidation of the brand. A legendary woman with a unique personality, who became a myth and a symbol of strength, facing the adversities of nineteenth-century Douro. This is a port cellar in Gaia, Porto, Portugal
It was a well organised tour with an informative guide and ending in a tasting of the white and tawny ports produced by the company.
When in this area of Portugal a wine tour is a must and this cellar offers a good overview of the region's biggest produce
I would recommend for a short but worthwhile tour

This Portuguese run and owned port cave has a great tour and lots of tastings to choose from. You can go basic with a 5 euro charge and two ports: one white and one tawny; a special at 9.5 euros for the tour and one glass of tawny, one glass of vintage ruby port with cheese and crackers (which I opted for); a flight of three ports - all of the above. I was just in time for the English tour which led our small impromptu group through the Ferreira cellars where our guide explained how the port was made, what a vintage port was, a late bottled vintage port, tawny port aged in port barrels and white port. The ruby ports are in oak barrels which can hold 73,000 liters of wine. Every year, they are cleaned with boiling water and a man has to go into the large ones to scrub them a bit. The huge barrels can last for 40 years, the smaller oak barrels for upwards of 80 years.

I learned so much from the tour. Ferreira is a friendly place unlike a couple others i tried to tour. When the tour was over the tasting began. It was very organized and informative which is why I give Ferreira five stars. The most popular port, the one I tasted was the 6 year old tawny and it was quite good especially in comparison with a 40 year old tawny the day before and a 20 year old tawny from another cave just prior to this visit.

This place's port wine was only rivaled by Croft during our few days tasting in 2013 (we did try to be thorough). And the history was fascinating.

It is a must to visit a port wine cellar. After asking around, which of the about 15-20 wineries, we should visit, we followed recommendation of one bar tender: Ferreira.
We chose standard tour, which lasts ca 30 minutes and includes two classes of port: red and white. At shop you can buy further examples.Tour guide was young lady called Lucy, who spoke excellent English clearly, enabling foreigners follow the tour easily. Tour gives you an idea, how port is produced and small history lesson. I would assume that children like the tour also, being in the wine cellars can be seen as an adventure.
