The gardens in themselves really aren’t that much, just lawns, some seating & a few palm trees. You wouldn’t go out of your way to visit it.
However the views from the garden fringes, especially over the river Douro, are probably the best in the entire city. You can see right down the Douro in both directions over towards Ribeira, over the Eiffel inspired Dom Louis 1 bridge & also upriver. At one edge is the frightening high upper level of the DL1 , over which you can walk or ride on the metro. Another side is taken with the metro stop itself and the Serra de Pilar monastery, now hosting a small museum. A very expensive 4 min cable car ride from Gaia quayside & Port wine lodges & restaurants, arrives on the riverside, as well as steps for the hardy. So the garden is a place of transit and a viewpoint. Even on a fine day though it’s something of a windy one.
