“A good base”
Reviewed 24 January 2013

As a group of golfers we have now stayed at the Matchroom three times in the past few years.
This is an RCI timeshare swap, all in all, a very good one in November. Each time we have stayed in one of the 3 b/room apartments, different ones, all good, clean, well maintained, with a view over the Mijas Lagos golf course and right next to the lower pool. We have rarely used the restaurant, but on the occasions we have, it is perfectly acceptable. The bar area is good, as is the beer.. The snooker room is very good, very under-used in November, which is a bonus. The pool/sauna and jacuzzi are much appreciated, after a hard day on the local courses (we walk!).
It takes a lot of courage to use the garage, the steepest slope ever seen, but once down there, it is handy for the apartment and very empty. The outside pools are usable, even in November, but not heated, it would appear. You need a car, as already stated. there are a couple a restaurants outside the complex, within easy walking distance (10 mins) La Morena ? near the motorway bridge, is excellent, as is El Golf, which is equally good, but considerably more expensive.
So, in conclusion, I'd say that the Matchroom is a great place to use as a base, to explore the local sites, like Mijas, Marbella, Puerto Banus and Gibraltar. Granada is do-able in a day. Last time we visited Seville, but best to stay there overnight, as it is a 2-3 hour drive.

Room Tip: The 3 b/room apartments have a view over the golf course.

We have two weeks at the Four Seasons in Vilamoura so used an exchange week to try somewhere different. Matchroom is a nice resort set in well kept grounds. It is essential that you hire a car as there are no supermarkets within walking distance and only really the El Golf restaurant to eat at if you don't want to drive anywhere. Taxis are expensive . If the weather is bad you will struggle to fill in your day if you are tied to the complex.( we had 4 days cloud / rain but luckily we had a car). Our appartment had two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Very clean and nicely furnished . I agree with other reviewers that the tv needs to be updated. Midweek cleaning was disappointing as on one occasion they only changed the towels and emptied the bins. The outdoor pool area was well maintained but the indoor pool was very uninviting , even in the rain! Happy hour was well attended and the live singer on Thursday evening was great. Didn't eat at the complex so can't comment on food. We ate every night at the Restaurant El Golf - excellent. Overall, this probably the best exchange we have had but not as good as Four Seasons Vilamoura.

We enjoyed our week at Matchroom Country Club, we were there the last of September. The grounds were lovely, the rooms were comfortable albeit a bit dated. The bar and dining room were nice, we ate dinner and breakfast there a couple of times and we thought the food was good and reasonably priced. The front desk people were friendly and helpful. Overall, it was a positive experience. Our only criticism was that the place does need a bit of TLC and it is off the beaten path. We did not have a car and so we had to get a cab nearly everyday, twice a day and that was an added expense. BTW, we were invited to attend the timeshare sales presentation but we did not attend and it was not a problem.

We spent one week at Matchroom Country Club, a very nice place with wonderful garden and our apartment was very nice and well equipped. Fine public area and good food at the restaurant. But it will take you about 50 minutes to walk to Fuengirola beach. We did that twice and had a taxi back, 10 to 12 Euro. Twice a week there is a free bus in the morning to Fuengirola and back early afternoon. You can buy water and bread in the restaurant. If you do not have a car, you can do your shopping in Fuengirola when taking the bus there, and back, or have a nice time on the beach and do your shopping before taking the taxi back. Very many people did their own cooking. Also other shops closer, but it will take you some time to walk, so a car would do it more easier. In Fuengirola there are many shops of different kinds and also a lot of restaurants. We found an area with at lot of restaurants and for starters, dinner and dessert you paid about 8 Euros, and the food was good. Of course you could choose what ever you liked. The house wine cost from about 10 Euros and you were allowed to taste it. You have a lot of beaches in Fuengirola either you want to lie on a comfortable bed with umbrella or sit in the sand. I will also recommend a trip by bus to Mijas, a lovely little town in the hill, bus from the bus statoin in Fuengirola and also to Marbella by bus, if you do not have a car. If you like to walk around, you can walk in the area uphil from the resort, where there are many beautifyl villas. Matthew in the restaurant was a very nice person. If enough people in the evenings they will have programs as Flamencodancers one evening.

All in all a good resort, the only thing; it should have been closer to the sea.

Room Tip: We had number 24, third floor, no sun in the morning, only on the roof.Allright for us. Otherwise I...

Upon reading the reviews on this website, I was very apprehensive to visit with my family this August due to the number of complains and negative points raised. However, after spending a week there i honestly don't understand where all these terrible reviews are coming from.

Upon arrival we found that our room had been given away due to a mix up with RCI & someone having the same surname as us. The reception staff handled it with excellence, allowing us to view 3 rooms and choose which one we would like for the week. This allowed us to have an extra bathroom. The room was big and spacious and we had a really nice view of the villages on the mountains.

I've read some reviews saying that it is an easy resort to find... THIS IS A LIE. Upon leaving the airport with our rental car, our GPS decided not to work, and so we had to find it ourselves. According to a local we asked, there a 2 Mijas', so after driving around in circles, we evently got to Fuengirola and then it was an easy one road up to the resort from there. Just ask some locals in stores as most of them know roughly where it is. Make sure you have a rental car, you'll be very stuck without one.

TIP: If ever in doubt, find the road called the A-7, it's like a minuture motorway/coast road, this will take you everywhere. Marbella, Fuengirola, Benalmadena etc. The A-7 will be the road you will always use when visiting places.

There is an ALDI about 3 minutes down the road by car. Don't bother walking. It takes about 20 minutes. We tried once, and there is no path, just the side of the road which is dangerous and dusty.

Location: It takes literally 10 minutes to drive straight down to Fuengirola to the beach or to get on the A-7. Yes, this resort isn't on the beach front, but it's not hours from civilization like some people made it out to be. The beaches at Fuengirola are nice, with some very nice shops in the town and it's about 25 minutes to Marbella, where the beaches are even nicer and you can walk for 5 minutes and visit the Old Town which is beautiful.

Places to visit: The reviews made it out like there was nothing to do, but actually there is lots. Swimming at the hotel, many beaches just a short drive away, Parque Acuatico Mijas is a nice small waterpark, if you go at 4 -7 there is a reduced entry fee which is what we did since it was more than enough time to do all the rides more than once. Aqualand Torremonlinos is an amazing big water park. Definitely recommend going. It's a 25 minute drive, just use the A-7 road. Go all out and hire tubes as it will save you SO MUCH queuing time. There is also a tree top adventure facility called Adventura Amazonia. We didn't go in the end due to not having any suitable shoes, but it seems very fun! There are other places to visit, mainly geared towards families with small children, such as Zoos and Aquatic Animal parks. There are leaflets and information in the hotel reception.

Food: All the reviews on here complained about there not being restaurants close, but a 1 minute walk down the road and there is an amazing restaurant called Restaurante el Golf. Amazing food, very very friendly English-speaking staff. Outdoor seating. Pizza, pasta, meats, paella! We went there nearly every nice. It's perfect for children too.

That concludes this review :)

Room Tip: Ask at reception if you could look around a few rooms.

Just been to the Matchroom in Spain. This was with a family member who had a timeshare. The place is very clean and the food is lovely in the clubhouse. Really enjoyed it. Place could do with a little tlc but in this economic climate so could a lot of places. Would definitely visit again.... Well done and thanks for all the guys in the clubhouse who worked very hard for us in the two weeks we stayed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Try and get on the side of the golf course as lovely views of mountains.......

We stayed at the Matchroom Resort from the 25th August to the 1st September. It is very easy to find, as it is signposted from the main road. Check in was painless, we were allowed in to our room early and were moved to a pool facing room which got the sun all afternoon/evening.

Room was very clean and spacious. Not sure why previous reviewers complained about the standard of furnishings - it was absolutely fine! Although the TV was antique, but who goes on holiday to watch TV? Our biggest complaint was the air conditioning - there was a small air con unit in the bedroom but not in the main living area, meaning the children got quite uncomfortable in the heat. There is, however, a normal electric fan which did help.

We are RCI club members, so didn't expect to have to attend any sales presentation. However, a knock on the door and we were handed a free breakfast voucher "in exchange for our views on the hotel". So we thought "what the heck, it's a free breakfast". Errr, no. We'd been conned into attending a sales pitch. However, after we made it absolutely clear from the start that we had no intention of buying anything, we were allowed to eat our breakfast in relative peace and leave without any pushy sales presentation, which was fine.

Location is a little out of the way, so car hire is essential. We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant (other than one breakfast) and didn't attend entertainment, so can't comment on that.

Pool was excellent and very well maintained, with plenty of sun loungers available. No need to get up at 5am to get a sun bed, just pop down around 10am and you'll still get prime spots. Pool bar food was fine but expensive, as are drinks - pop down to Eroski at the Miramar shopping centre and stock up on cans of pop for the fridge in the room!

With regards to the golf course redevelopment - it is still going on, but the course nearest to the hotel is now grassed so the dust mentioned by earlier reviewers is not so much a problem. It did not affect the quality of our holiday.

There are a couple of decent restaurants within walking distance, but we choose to eat mostly in Mijas Pueblo (10 minutes drive) or La Cala de Mijas (15 minutes drive), both of which have an abundance of good restaurants. Although it has to be said that the Costa Del Sol is no longer cheap for food, we found that meals are almost twice as expensive as in the UK, even at McDonalds! We found a lovely restaurant in La Cala called El Gusto which had excellent food.

If you want to cook your own food, the Miramar Parque shopping centre is only 5 minutes drive away, with lots of shops, an Eroski supermarket, food court and cinema, Perfect for stocking up on groceries.

One final thing of note - the reception does not open on a morning until 9am. This makes checkout a problem as our flight was at 10.30, meaning we had to check in at Malaga airport (half an hour away) by 8.30am. We couldn't find anyone to hand the safe and room keys to, so ended up leaving them in the hotel room. I'll be checking my credit card statement to ensure no deductions from our security deposit have been made as a result, because it is crazy to not have a manned reception on normal checkout day.

Overall, an excellent resort. We will definitely consider returning.

Room Tip: Grab a pool facing room to get the sun into the evening.
