Driving from Cordoba to Toledo the day following my birthday we decided to take a detour to the town of Ubeda. To continue celebrating I decided to book lunch at Cantina La Estacion as I had read the great reviews and discovered the restaurant has been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand. This restaurant has also recently recently received a "Sun" in the Repsol guide for their excellent quality and variety of dishes. This award recognises that this is one of the best restaurants in Spain. We have eaten our way around Spain for the past three weeks and I can assure you Cantina La Estacion definitely deserves these accolades.
The inside of the restaurant recreates the interior of a luxury train dining carriage. The staff are welcoming and efficient and because there was no English menu they quickly printed an interpretation for us. As translations go it was rather confusing so we decided to treat ourselves to the Gastronomic Degustation menu for 35 euros each.
The food was sensational the flavours enticing and delectable with every course a surprise created by a true gourmand. I could attempt to describe the dishes, we were not always sure exactly what we were eating as our waiter had limited English. But it is best to enjoy the experience without preconception. Just enjoy the ride!
The portion sizes are large enough to enjoy the flavours and still allow you to eat so many courses (I think 7). The value is astonishing. The previous night we celebrated my birthday at El Choco a Michelin Star restaurant in Cordoba. It was excellent but the portions were miniature and our lunch at Cantina La Estacion at a fraction of the cost was far superior in our opinion.
