Owner description: La Sinagoga del Agua has been discovered in 2007 and opened to public visits in 2010 in the monumental city of Úbeda by the family Crespo- López. It is a totally private initiative of restauration of a space hidden into several houses belonging to different families where they were living a normal life, with no idea about the greatness of the place walled into their houses. The visit costs 4,50€ per person (3,50€ kids under 12 and groups over 15 persons). All visits are guided IN SPANISH and last about 30 minutes. We have written information in ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN and BRAILLE Private guided visits are available, booking required, outside of the opening timetable (see calendar on web site) Information and booking: Artificis

An extraordinary discovery - a very early middle age Synagogue poss. 10th century...found behind the tiles of a 1950's barbershop...the mikvah - ritual bath is breathtaking, a magical space.

“A unique experience”
Reviewed 28 January 2013

This was perhaps the most interesting sight in Úbeda, as it is living proof of the town´s complicated relationship between Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The guided tour provided a lot of information beyond the history of the Sinagogue.

“Fascinating and unexpected”
Reviewed 11 December 2012

That these remains are available for touring attests to the willingness of developers to forego their destruction in favor of preservation. Tours were available only in Spanish, but as an English speaker, I was given a English language handout with room by room information and I tagged along with a tour group mainly consisting of people who knew no or very little about the faith or practice of Judaism. They asked many questions and I think perhaps were educated by the answers. The site is incredible, especially when you actually are underground and realize that is how the Jews lived and worshipped. I felt quite emotional there. The tour was definitely a plus.

“A Memorable Experience”
Reviewed 8 November 2012

This tour was memorable not so much because of the artifacts per se but rather because of the modern-day aspect of what happens when someone stumbles upon a historical discovery and the challenges of validating its authenticity. We were really fascinated by the situation and very impressed with both Andrea, as the manager, and the owner (whom we met briefly at the end of the tour) for their integrity and dedication to the project. We readily recommend this unique experience.

“Jewish soul in spain”
Reviewed 28 August 2012

This was a surprising and exciting discovery while touring Spain with a group of Travel professionals organized by the Tourism office of Spain. The owner told his story with so much enthusiasm as if he found a treasure. This is a contractor that wanted to turn old houses in a small village into new apartments and parking. while they were digging, they started to find Jewish items, rooms, wells, large storage jars for wheat and wine, pottery and more. The contractor sponsored all the work of this historical site, ended up loosing his own house and insist on keeping it.
knowing my family history and its strong connection Spain, this discovery from Medieval days overwhelmed me.
