Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: La Sinagoga del Agua has been discovered in 2007 and opened to public visits in 2010 in the monumental city of Úbeda by the family Crespo- López. It is a totally private initiative of restauration of a space hidden into several houses belonging to different families where they were living a normal life, with no idea about the greatness of the place walled into their houses. The visit costs 4,50€ per person (3,50€ kids under 12 and groups over 15 persons). All visits are guided IN SPANISH and last about 30 minutes. We have written information in ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN and BRAILLE Private guided visits are available, booking required, outside of the opening timetable (see calendar on web site) Information and booking: Artificis

“Found Heritage”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

We enjoyed a guided tour of 4 Jewish heritage sites, homes and synagogue, provided by the tourist center in Ubeda. These locales were discovered after Ubeda was designated a World Heritage Site (along with sister city, Baeza). These sites had been lived in for centuries as common homes and, as such, have only recently been discovered and restored. These sites provide interesting insight into the lives of an oft forgotten Jewish community.

“Extraordinary Place”
Reviewed 5 July 2013

A medieval synagogue with a mikveh that will take your breath away. It was worth the 1 hour and 45 minute drive from Granada where we were staying. A must-see. Special thanks to Andrea, our guide, for sharing his time, knowledge, and passion for this special place.

“Not an Archeological Site”
Reviewed 22 June 2013

We made the beautiful drive to Ubeda through what I call "Oliveland", in other words millions of olive trees, fantastic. We had read about this Synagogue and were anxious to see it. However, I had also read some criticism that there was a lack of real archeological study of the site. I can see why. The entire site is renovated. All the stonework is new, the fancy back lighting, the antique furniture brought in from somewhere else. The guide brings you in to the "rabbi's house"; there is no evidence that a rabbi or anyone else lived there. Yes, there is a well; yes there is a space that could have been a mikvah, but nothing is original. The tour was in Spanish only, although the guide spoke some English..."no photos or videos". They gave you an English handout to read then return to them. Was it an actual synagogue...questionable. Is it a reproduction of a medieval synagogue...okay, yes. But for someone interested in seeing the real thing, The "synagogue" was a major disappointment.

“Sinagogue in Ubeda”
Reviewed 10 May 2013

Very interesting sinagogue in centre of Ubeda, which has been recently renovated and restored. Several rooms containing jewish artefacts which have been donated from elsewhere (as the original furniture/fittings had been destroyed in the inquisition. Friendly guide who gave us a private tour in english. Well worth a visit.
