“A great hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014 via mobile

Just got home from this hotel and overall it was a great holiday pros: staff very friendly especially maids waiters and waitresses rooms very clean and adequate very clean hotel and grounds no problems trying to get a sun bed pools absolutely fantastic, good amenities to keep kids occupied, the rooftop bar is the real selling point to the hotel with amazing views,on our last night the manager took time out to find out if we had a nice holiday and if we had any problems we thought this was a very nice personal touch.great resort very central location beach and sea stunning. Cons: not enough choice on the kids buffet ,hotel and resort very much geared up for Germans (although this didn't affect our stay) the shower room used for later departures not very adequate no English Thompson rep avaliable all week wasted time sat around waiting for departure meeting and no one bothered to show. All in all this was a great holiday will definitely go back

Hotel - Gran Vista is a large hotel situated over six floors with a huge buffet and eating area (some outside). The overall condition was good (many comments on Tripadvisor about looking tired - whilst not ultra modern and new it was generally pretty good). The swimming pool(s) and surrounding grassy areas offer plenty of variety and space to mix with others or to find a nice quiet spot. Great point if you have kids, the pool areas weren't slippery at all. No accidents! No need to reserve sun loungers, plenty for all - although most of the Brits seemed to think they should (ironic as the majority of the guests are German!) Additional facilities include synthetic grass tennis and football pitches, mini-golf course, volleyball, kids playground and kids club - all free. Evening entertainment was OK; includes the kids at the beginning and then switches to the bigger kids as the night went on. It was varied but the best bit was if you didn't want to be involved you could go elsewhere in the hotel / your room and not be subjected to the noise all night long. On the roof is a bar with a fabulous view of the surrounding area and a great place to have a drink and watch the sunset. They also have live music some nights to entertain you whilst enjoying the views.

Location - transfer from airport to hotel takes approx 1hr. The hotel sits 500m from the beach. You walk down the main shopping street to reach it, passing lots of shops and alternative food options. The beaches are really nice. Beautiful sand, with loungers and parasols for hire. The sea was very calm and shallow, lovely temperature and a great change of scenery. They run bus services and a mini road-train around the town; options to venture further afield made easier.

Food - the buffet is HUGE and offers lots of choice you can easily eat there for two weeks, never leave and not get bored - exactly what we did! There is a kids buffet as well which was popular and had ketchup on tap! The outside bistro served the usual mix of pizza, stuff with chips as well as sandwiches and paella

Service - probably the stand out point of the holiday. From the reception staff meeting and greeting, the kitchen team(s) and waiters, right through to the cleaners and maintenance crews everyone was really friendly and helpful. The management seem to take it seriously too - we were invited to the top floor bar for a (free) drink to meet and talk to the managers. They were genuinely interested in peoples thoughts and opinions of the hotel and how our holiday was going. Overall the service was beyond excellent (special thanks to Irwing the waiter who was so friendly and kind during our stay - our son thought he was brilliant!)

Weather - During our stay in July we had a couple of cloudy days but other than that, wall to wall sun and temperatures into the 30s most days. Sometimes a nice cool breeze but generally perfect weather for sun bathing and cooling off in the pools.

Other - WIFI & Trousers... My only single criticism, and to be honest its a bit sad as we were on hols, but the WIFI was poor. You could use it for free at the outside bistro but the connection was terrible. Elsewhere you had to sign up and pay for it. In this day and age it should be everywhere, good quality and free. Just a warning for the men - for dinner you are expected to wear trousers. Not a bad thing but a little odd and if like me you took lots of shorts and not many trousers, it can catch you out!

Overall - brilliant hotel, service and location. Would recommend highly to families but its not just a family focused hotel. We will probably go back again at some point (especially as there was talk of a refit this coming winter!)

We stayed here for a week at the end of July and unfortunately it didn't live up to its ratings. We did not find the staff to be very friendly with the exception of just a couple.
The food was adequate but quite hectic in the serving area. Don't ask for too much of the freshly cooked food or you are likely to get some sort of comment from the chef. We decide to eat late one night so headed down for 8.30 as the restraint closes at 9.00, only to find food was being put away and the kids buffet was gone. The same night despite it being quiet I had to ask the waiter to clear plates from our table. (The waiter service was slightly better outside than through in the rear seating area). The same night we were approached by a waiter at 9.00 to tell us the what food was left was now put away.
I have noticed some reviews recently regarding drainage problems in the hotel and despite the responses I can assure you they are not repaired. If you decide to turn the shower up it won't be long til the tray is filled and anything you have on the floor is soaked through. When I complained to the manager about this it was just glossed over.
On the subject of the manager I approached him regarding the pool area toilets as there was constantly mess in here, bin overflowing and never any soap. I really found him to be very arrogant. His reply was it was nothing to do with him it was the guests, he could do nothing. I suggested cleaning more often, larger bin, and it was not what I expected. His response to this was what I expect and what he expects must be different. The toilets were cleaned an hour later as I advised him I was to put this review on and he told me not to as it was getting cleaned. We still did not see any soap in the dispensers and the towel problem was soon sorted as there were none of these left either.
The hotel is mainly targeted at Germans with what we appear to be about 75% of the occupancy. I can honestly say we did not feel welcomed and felt more left out.
There are 5 outdoor pools and more sun beds than required which was good as we did not have to try to get a sunbed in the morning as daylight came in. One of the pools has a central jacuzzi but it only seemed to start working on our last afternoon.
The daytime bistro was always busy and the food in here was really good. This was the only are to get free wifi in the hotel and it was very temperamental to say the least.
Would I visit this hotel again? No
Do I think it's Thomson platInum? No
Would I recommend it? No

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a pool view.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to write your comments.
As we were speaking the last day of your stay when you explain to me the problems in the bathroom and showed to me the photos, it happens only in the moments we have all the children at mini lcub (almost 250). We are intensifying the cleaning in this area at this moments when we have more children.
Usually the guides and our staff inform to all the guest that this kind of things must be comunicated at time, to improve inmediately whatever wrong.

Thank you very much of all the team, and we hope in the future we can show you that we can improve our services.

Sincerely,

We stayed here at the end of May going into June and everything was wonderful. I've been to lots of 3 stars from I was a child and was chuffed to get a 4 star at the price we did. On arrival our room wasn't ready but we were able to put our luggage away and enjoy a glass of orange while finding our bearings around the hotel. Room was very clean and lovely big shower. We were overlooking the entrance rather than the pool which actually turned out better as the sun was with us on the balcony before dinner. The weather let us down but we were able to use the indoor pool and also the spa is available. Plenty of sunbeds, I don't think that would be a problem at any time. The only thing I would warn English speakers about is that young children might miss out on the evening disco as it was mostly in German. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that no-one explained about the dining hall and when we first went to dinner we were totally lost! I dunno if it's a new thing but all our dinner and evening drinks went on a tab to be paid when checking out. Heads up - you sit where you want!

We are regular visitors to Vilamoura but decided on a change this year. After much searching, we made a late booking for the Gran Vista based on, what appeared to be, a reasonable half-board deal with Thomson Holidays and the previous reviews of the hotel on this site.

Overall opinion is that, with a little bit of TLC to the rooms, it could be an excellent hotel.
It certainly has the grounds, facilities and people (special mentions below) to be just that.

What's not so good?
- Rooms are not that large, particularly with a 3rd bed added.
- Beds are singles pushed together, even if booked as a 'double' room.
- Rooms (221 and 224) are a little dated and could do with a bit of a refresh and some minor issues attended to (broken toilet seat, tarnished shower fittings, wall damage).
- Strange glass door to shower-room that did not lock and had gaps at each side.
- Key card to room 224 failed to work on each of the first 4 days (frustrating for the person who had to keep returning to reception to have card 'activated' - not frustrating for reception who could "activate it each day, it's not a problem").

What is so good then to make it almost excellent?
- Nicely presented hotel with easy reach (across road) of bars, restaurants and shops.
- Short (5 minute) walk to excellent beach (with sun loungers and water sports available).
- Extensive grounds with choice of pools (including toddler and indoor pools) and shaded areas if desired.
- Lots of sun loungers available (some set by pools, many available to move to locations within grounds).
- Free towels provided for sun loungers and changed every other day.
- Despite hotel being full for last few days, it never felt crowded or noisy around grounds during the day.
- Variety of sports facilities available (tennis, volleyball, crazy putting, table-tennis, etc).
- Good daytime activity selection (children and adults) with no pressure to participate.
- Good breakfast buffet selection (cereals, fruits, breads, jams, cheeses, cold meats, pastries, eggs, bacon, sausage, juices, tea, coffee etc).
- Good evening buffet selection with 'special' days during each week (salads, soups, fish, meats, pastas, breads, desserts, etc).
- Poolside Bistro serving good selection of reasonably priced food and drinks during the day.
- Despite initial concerns over buffet style half-board, all food was of good quality and even the fussier eaters in our party always managed to find something they enjoyed.
- Above all though, the thing that made the holiday special for us was the atmosphere created by some of the hotel staff. All those we had direct dealings with (notwithstanding the issue with the key card for room 224) were polite, friendly and extremely hard working. This goes from the waiters in the restaurant and lounge, to the bistro and entertainment team.
- We have to mention the excellent waiters Pepe, Paul and Jose who all made us feel particularly welcome. Despite the hours these guys put in 6 days a week, they always had a smile on their faces and a friendly word or two - even helping us out with some Spanish lessons.
- A very special mention must go to David. It's hard to believe that someone you've only known for a few days can have such an impact. There were tears all round as we left and, needless to say, we will stay in touch.

Other comments?
- It's a hotel primarily aimed at the German market (I believe Tui have 80% of the rooms) but this was never an issue for us as the staff spoke English and most of the announcements and entertainment were stated in German, English and Spanish. However, it did appear that for the younger kids club everything was in German only (this may have been down to only German kids participating, or may have been why only German kids participated).
- Some of the evening entertainment wasn't great, but you can't cater for all tastes, and it's up to individuals to make the most of it.
- There's a rooftop lounge bar that's apparently very good, but we did not make use of it as we preferred to remain in the lounge bar (where Pepe and David work).
- We are already looking at options to return next year and if the hotel spruce up the rooms a bit and if our star waiters are there, then we will most certainly chose Gran Vista over Vilamoura for our next holiday.

We have just spent 2 weeks in the Gran vista and Spa hotel. It is very well located, five minutes walk to the beach and sea. Ca'n Picafort is a small resort, not one of the prettiest resort in Majorca but family and couples orientated. Rather lively with numerous souvenir shops and bars.
A good place to stay. We were able to take buses to visit surrounding villages and resort and hired a car to visit the island.

Good welcome from the receptionists in the hotel. During our stay The staff were alwaysreally helpful and pleasant. We also really enjoyed the good variety and quality of the food in the restaurant. Some areas of improvement: I wish that water was provided free of charge at the restaurant every evening ... in the morning we could get fresh water for free so ... why not for evening meals ? And also the closing time of the restaurant at 9 pm ... too early really. During the summer when the hotel is full, 10 pm would be a better time and would have allowed us to spend more time in the panoramic bar.

Great facilities: tennis and footbal pitches ... nice swimming pool and no problem to get a sunbed and space within the gardens. You can also borrow table tennis bats and tennis rackets from the reception. Access to the SPA is free. Really enjoyable: steam room, "igloo room", sauna, Jacuzzi, pool ... I loved it. We found the hotel very clean and our room very clean too. The rooms could do with some refurbishment but they are acceptable. Good for a couple. However we were sharing our room with our teenager son ( 15 yr old) and found the room too small for us three. We were unfortunately not on one of the highest floors of the hotel. Our room was on the first floor - just above the bar and the roof of the bar. Not ideal position and view at all but we were able to change after a few days and did get a room still on the first floor but viewing a big palmtree and the pool which was better.

The panorama roof bar is amazing with fantastic views. We started most of our evenings there before going down for dinner. Occasionally after dinner we would stay on site at the pool-side bar to watch the entertainment however we didn't find the entertainment good enough and spent most of our evening in the resort.

The bar near the pool was good too. We took a few drinks and snacks there. This is also unfortuantely the only place where you can get wifi for free betw 10 am and 5 pm. The signal was usually not very strong and most of the time, I reviewed my mails in the bars surrounding the hotel where wifi was provided for free with a stronger signal. Again an area of improvement for the hotel: provide free wifi access to the customers.

To conclude, we really had a good time at the Gran Vista. Because of the wifi and because of the size of the room, I didn't rate the hotel as excellent but I would happily go back and spend another week in the hotel and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the highest floors (4th and above) facing the pool for a better view.
