“Fantastic Holiday”
Reviewed 26 August 2013

Quiet, friendly, clean family hotel
Rooms are apartments - lots of space !!!
High quality food - lots of variety
Only downfall 20 minutes walk to shops & beaches:-
Ting Ting train stop outside hotel ( every 25 minutes)
Cabs from hotel cost 5 euros
Walk was too much in heat for children so relied on train & cabs
An enjoyable holiday would definitely recommend !!!!

Stayed here for a week with husband and 11 year old son. The welcome at reception was very good - helpful, quick and efficient.
The room was lovely - don't mind if a little outdated - it was very clean and everything worked. Our room overlooked the beautigul gardens and was in the shade which was great for us.Taking a travel kettle was a good tip by previous reviewers. There was a large fridge with small freezer compartment. The black out curtains were appreciated and to be honest this hotel is so quiet during the night time - a good nights sleep was had every night. We did have a few problems with ants but a spray with our insect repellent saw them off.
The Restaurant served a hot/cold buffet and a chef was cooking throughout the lunch time and evening fresh food served to order. There was a slight problem with the drinks dispensers and a few juices did run out at times. There were some flies landing on the food but we just dug deep and cut the edges of our cheese !
Our son enjoyed the family football sessions held at 5pm every day bar one, but for his age group he got a little bored at times. This hotel is great for young families and the entertainment staff were brilliant with them.
The beach at Ca'n Picafort was lovely - though not a long walk - it seems a long way in the heat of the day.
The sun bed issue was the same for us as other reviewers. It is annoying and selfish. Some groups of people were even " bagsying " the same spot by the pool every sunrise. Not sure what the hotel can do about it. Maybe if sunbeds were allocated to rooms people wouldn't get so obsessed by it.
The pool had a female life guard on duty who was very attentive - this was good to see.
The adult evening entertainment was a bit hit and miss - but it was all taken with good humour - there was one live band called the British Invasion who made up for it all.
We probably wouldn't return here as there was not enough for my son to do , but would definately recommend to families with young children.

Let's get the negative out of the way - Sunbeds! We have a 21 month old toddler and it was important to have a sunbed at the shallow end of the pool so that she could play. In order to obtain a sunbed in this location you had to get up at 6am to place a towel on the bed, if you didn't forget sitting round the pool at all. The annoying thing was the majority of beds with towels on sat unused all day. I don't know what the answer is but it's a big problem at this hotel.

Apart from this we couldn't fault the hotel, the food was excellent and rooms spacious and clean. The entertainment wasn't bad as theset ypes of hotel go. Location wise it was a little way out from the town and beach (15 -20 mins walk with a buggy), but that didn't stop us walking in a couple of evenings.

Overall we'd definitely go back.

We had 10 days at the Vell Mari July/Aug 2013. Its staff are lovely and its best asset. The rooms were fine and beds comfy. Plenty to choose from in the restaurant. Very 'young-family' orientated. Pool hygiene excellent with lifeguard all day long. Our teenager was a bit lonely at times. 30 mins free Wi-Fi per day in the reception area - you could pay for more. Outside of the small town - 15 mins walk to the nearest supermarket.

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room not facing the pool and were given block 6 ground floor facing a quiet roa...

We stayed for two weeks at the Vell Mari from 30th July to 13th August 2013 and on the whole this was a really nice hotel. We are a family of four with two children aged 13 and 10 and were allocated a ground floor one bedroom apartment. The room was spotlessly clean if a little dated. The air-conditioning wasn't the best, but because of the way the apartment faced it didn't get the sun full on during the day so the room kept cool anyway.

There was a wide choice of food in the restaurant and there was always something to suit all of us - even the fussiest child in our family! There were the usual all inclusive staples such as a salad cart, hot buffet with different varieties of fish, chicken and red meat which changed every day, the usual kids buffet with staples of pasta, pizza etc. plus show cooking.

For snacks through the day and evening there was a chiller cabinet in the bar filled with sandwiches and cakes and a sandwich toaster next to it. The salami and cheese toasties were particularly nice. There was plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at the bar to choose from.

There were lots of things for the kids to get involved in if they so wished with the Thomas Cook kids club and the hotel's own kids club. Our children only used the clubs a couple of times as they really enjoy being by the pool but when they did use them they had lots of fun.

All the staff from maids, bar/restaurant staff to reception were very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a problem with the phone in our room and it was sorted very quickly and efficiently.

The hotel is about a 20 minute walk to the main beach in c'an picafort which is the beach we preferred to go to as it's nice and big with lots going on. We did walk a couple of times, but as it was only 5 euros in a cab after a day at the beach it's quite nice to be driven back to the hotel in 5 minutes rather than take the "ting-ting" train (3 euros per adult and 1.5 per child and a 45 minute round trip - nice experience to go on for the children). The hotel do provide a shuttle bus service to the local small beach which is free of charge.

On the whole we had a lovely holiday at the Vell Mari and would recommend it.

There are only a couple of small niggles and here they are:

The hotel doesn't close the pool each day in the evening which is in our opinion completely unacceptable as far as health and safety goes, even at 1am we saw children still swimming in the pool on the first week (the families in question must have left at the end of our first week as we didn't see this so much on our second week there). There were no parents around watching these children (probably drinking at the bar?....) In all the years we have been holidaying abroad this is the first hotel we have ever stayed in that allows late night swimming and we have been on many, many holidays.

Another niggle was the beds - they were on the hard side. We spoke to a few different people during our stay and they all seemed to say the same so it couldn't have been just us, the only person who said she was having really a good nights sleep had a bad back and said the hard bed was perfect for her. Maybe we have all been spoilt with lovely soft beds at home.

The last niggle was the evening entertainment, we can't comment on the children's early entertainment as our children are too old to want to watch it. However the evening entertainment was very, very dated. There were a couple of live groups which were ok and a couple of magician acts but on the days in-between it was dance act after dance act after dance act!!! There are only so many times you can sit and watch a group of dancers dancing around on stage to music. We broke the evenings up by going into town at least there were different things to see and do.

The pool was clean and of a good size we did have to get up to reserve sunbeds by 7am but unfortunately that comes with a holiday abroad.

Overall a nice hotel with lots of nice features and a few little niggles but nothing too major to put you off staying there.

We really enjoyed our stay at Iberostar Vell Mari. There where Marny activities for the whole family, we participated in fit and fun, and our children joined the clubs. Good service, food and beautiful locations. This was our second stay at Vell Mari, and we would love to come back.

We spent a week in July 2013 at Vell Mari and thoroughly enjoyed it. All of the staff were helpful and nothing too much trouble there were lots of young families and the kids club looked well run. Our 15 & 16 year old boys could partake in the activities but it was more geared to younger ones but town is only 15 20 min walk away for an evening visit while the kids club is on after dinner. The food was varied and good, rooms were clean &reception staff always helpful. The only downside was the sun bed hogging by some people who put there towels on at 7 am then not returning till 4 pm. There is not enough room around the pool for all of the hotel residents to use the sun beds at the same time.
