“Very Family Orientated”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

We have recently returned from a wonderful week at the Protur Bonaire. I did lots of research into hotels that would be suitable for our first family holiday with an adventurous 21 month old daughter. We were not disappointed at all. The hotel is spotlessly clean and has excellent facilities for children.

We went All Inclusive, which we would never normally do as we prefer to find a local restaurant, but having a little one meant we didn’t feel we were able to do this yet. We were glad we choose All Inclusive as it was much easier with our daughter. There were plastic plates and cups for the young children, along with small-sized cutlery, so there was no need to take our own. The food was better than expected and there was plenty of choice for each meal. We had breakfast and evening meal in the restaurant, and then lunch either around the Splash Pool or in the Pool Bar (from the All Inclusive Buffet – anything off the menu you had to pay extra for). Our daughter enjoyed the ice creams that were included (just Nestle mini-milk type lollies but big enough for small mouths).

Maybe because of the time of year we went (1st to 8th September) we didn’t find there was a problem with sun beds. There are plenty of beds and if you are not too fussed about where you sat, then it wasn’t a problem.

The pools were freezing during the first part of the holiday, but that’s not the hotel’s fault! We spent most of the time in the smaller pool that was just shallow enough for our daughter to stand up in. She loved the Splash Pool with slides and Pirate Ship too, and it made a nice change to have a wander over to that side of the hotel.

The rooms are absolutely gorgeous and have obviously recently been refurbished. They are much nicer than is shown in the Thomson brochure. My husband was relieved when he saw the room! It was spacious for the three of us, very comfortable and had Freeview channels (including CBeebies). The kitchen was small, but this was fine for us. The bathroom was lovely with a powerful shower over the bath. Our balcony (Room 2313 in Block 2) overlooked a field and as soon as we shut the door behind us, it was silent. We were not bothered by the noise of the entertainment at all.

We are not normally one to partake in hotel entertainment, but on this occasion we did watch the children’s entertainment which started at about 8pm until 8.45pm. It was lovely watching all of the children enjoying themselves, and some got especially excited when Thomson The Dog came out (ours included)! After this time, we would generally go for a walk into Cala Bona, and if our daughter fell asleep in the pushchair, we sometimes went into the Gran Sol hotel for a drink on the terrace (gorgeous). I cannot comment on the entertainment for the grown ups as we never watched it (it’s not our thing really). We didn’t use the Kids Club or Creche as I think our daughter was a bit too young for it.

All in all, we had a lovely week. The hotel, staff and facilities were excellent, and the only thing we could fault was the weather!

Room Tip: Room 2312 (Block 2, level 3 over the Italian restaurant was very quiet)

Just returned from 10 days in this great little resort.

The rooms have all been recently renovated and it shows. Easily warrants it's 4 stars, I would suggest 4 star plus. Whilst it's not as luxurious as some of the 5 star places we've stayed in the room was clean, modern and perfect for our needs. Our bed was large and comfy and our son's sofa bed was perfect for him (he is 4). The small kitchen area was ideal for our simple cooking needs. The bathroom was equally modern and clean. With satellite TV and air-con that works and a pool facing balcony we could not fault it (and we do try).

We went self-catering, in my view the best option. We still used the restaurant for breakfast on 3 times but we do not like eating in the same place all the time. The breakfast we had was very British and catered well for kids but was extremely varied with lots of choice. The quality was good. I've stayed in many hotels and cannot remember a much better buffet breakfast. With a small buffet bar solely for the kids they really did think of everything.

The splash pook was great, our 4 year old son played endlessly on the pirate ship. The main pool was also great even if it was a little cold.

Apart from one rude reception member of staff (blond, female Spaniard) the rest of the hotel staff were faultless. The Thomsen reps were all a credit and treated our son amazingly. He went to Kids Club a number of times and enjoyed it, the Chocolate Party being a highlight. You get out what you put in though and we did participate in quizes and the water polo.

I didn't think that much of Cala Bona itself. It's OK but let's be clear, this is not authentic Spain. That said if you want authentic Spain you shouldn't really be booking a holiday in Majorca. It is what it is and frankly this resort absolutely nails what it sets out to provide - an excellent family holiday. If you're kids are under 10 I would definitely recommend it.

Well done Thomson. I was dreading this first experience of a resort holiday but none of us wanted to leave in the end.

Room Tip: We stayed in Block 4 which was ideal.

We have just returned from the hotel Protur Aparthotel Bonaire and it was a wonderful family holiday. We stayed from 15th-22nd September and I cant wait to go back. Two adults, 3 and half year old and 9 month old baby.

On arrival the hotel itself looked very nice! The reception area is lovely and spacious and the staff are very helpful and friendly. They have little trolleys to use to help with taking your luggage up to your rook which is great especially when you have children and a buggy to take as well. We stayed in Block 5 (room 5310) it was lovely. very modern and very clean. The kitchen was on the small side with no oven but had two hobs and a microwave which was great for warming bottles. The fridge was big enough to have a weeks worth of food in! Cupboards were stacked with plates and cutlery so was pleased and all was pre-cleaned before we arrived and after the people before us had left. The view was an amazing sea view which was beautiful in the mornings to see the sun rise. The TV came in handy from time to time. You have to pay a 10 euro deposit for the TV Control and get it back when you hand control back with receipt.

You can also hire for the day buggies and high chairs which are all mothercare brands. The buggy we hired was clean and great for taking our 3 year old for a walk along the harbor from Cala Bona to Cala Miller. You had it for 24 hours, that cost 3 euros a day!
The high chair was 1.50 a day and well worth it!!!! The buggy you collected there and then from reception and the high chair was delivered to your room that day so that was brilliant.

The bathroom was modern and well kitted out with clean towels for all, big and small ones. They also supplied hair and body wash which I thought was a great idea. Loads of loo roll too! However, the shower was amazing! Want one at home now!!!! Also, always enough hot water in bathroom and kitchen so what was fab.

Bedroom was again very modern and the beds were single beds but big single beds. The Cot we had was a mothercare cot and very clean. It came with loads of sheets. However, I did take my own and glad I did as it did get a little chilly at night as you cant turn the air con off or down!!! The sofa beds were comfy but I was worried in case my 3 year rolled out but we put all the cushions down the side of him and on the floor and he was fine.
Loads of space in two wardrobes and lots of space to put things all around the apartment.

The splash pool was brill for kids. The pirate ship was ace, so my 3 year loved that. The adults weren't supposed to come down the slides but they did but they didnt crash into any other children so I wasn't too fussed but I did notice that one if the slides didnt have alot of water coming down it and the kids got stuck 3/4 of the way down. Some of the slides had steps to go up onto the slides and the steps matched the floor tiles so you couldnt really see the steps which I found annoying as a few kids (& adults) would trip on them!

Again, I agree with the previous comment about being speakers near the splash pool, you could never hear what was happening from the main pool. However, The pools themselves were very clean - main pool was chilly! Indoor pool wasnt open so cant comment on that. But was gutted it wasnt open :( Gym was good in which my husband used a few mornings.

Kids club & staff were fab and ran between 7-9pm in the evenings these were 5 euros - the chocolate party was good & went down well!!. Morning sessions were free and also very good, they ran from 10-12. The kids also go to see Thomas Dog and have a free Thomas hat, T-shirts and juice bottle.I would recommend them & would use again.

Cala Bona harbor was beautiful and very and felt very safe. We ate at the Chinese restaurant and that was very very very good indeed. The other restaurants were Oliva, Chiris and a fishy restaurant and they were all good. The pizza's at the first pizza place you come to from hotel is lush and so is paparazzi. The Hotel Cala Bona do good coffee's :)

The spar is on the expensive side but if you find the bip supermacardo 250 m from the hotel its well worth it, fresh baguettes and milk etc and alot cheaper! They sold pampers nappies and wipes but they only sold Cow and Gate formula and not much of it so I would take more than you think on the formula side of things as I used Aptimil and couldnt find it anywhere but had just enough to get home on!!

The evening entertainment is brilliant. Runs from 7ish and has a disco bit for kiddies around 8pm and Thomas Dog comes out and they have different styles on each evening, like x-factor or Britain's got talent. Kimbo was fab and ALL the kids loved her.

Complex itself was very clean and had a soft play area, slides a mini wendy house, toddler pools and a fountain with terrapins in! Tons of sunbeds so dont have to fight for them. However, we always went down around 9-9:30 and got good spots so was pleased I didnt have to fight for them!

All in all, if you have children and want a nice safe and friendly holiday with a great complex then I would definitely recommend this hotel. I cant wait to go back!!!!!

Room Tip: Block 5 towards the back was good - could still hear evening entertainment which finished around 11...

This was our first family holiday in a hotel and by all accounts we started at the top! Everyone we met kept saying this standard is not the norm. Kids made lots of friends. They also LOVED the kids club.Highly recommend.
Hotel left birthday cakes for kids which was a lovely touch. Will hopefully go back.

In a word Fantastic!
I have been in the hospitality trade for 15 years and have worked in some of the best hotels around. The Bonaire is up there. Every member of staff from the cleaners to the top management always give you a smile and says hello.
My 19 month old daughter is an early riser, consequently we were nearly always first for breakfast, every day there were at least 8 cleaners brushing and mopping the outside table area, this is very impressive, the place was spotless and i mean spotless.
The waiting on staff were tireless even in 30 degree heat, i must say i did feel for them as the uniform is black trousers and a dark grey shirt-not good in the sun! The bar staff seemed to adore children and my normally shy daughter loved them.
Thomson entertainers were about the best i have seen, they were all very good but a special mention has to go to Kim- if that girl could bottle what she does with kids she would a very rich lady!! utterly brilliant.
I could prattle on for a long time about how good everything was but other reviews have done this already.
One thing that i must mention is that Cala Bona in late September is fantastic. Alot of very nice bars and restraunts and very chilled out, we once sat at one of the harbour cafe's for nearly 2 hours and didn't notice the time go, very relaxing!
The creche facilities are very good, wether this is down to Thomson or Bonaire they are great, the creche staff have an excellent affinity with children of all ages and we were very comfortable leaving our daughter with them.
If you have children of any age this is most definatly the place to go.
In short, the rooms, spotless and well appointed
the staff, VERY friendly, professional and tireless
The food, Good variety well cooked and well presented
We will be back next year.

Room Tip: we were in block 2 facing away from the pool (2215) not the best view in majorca but i liked it and...

Just returned after all inclusive family holiday (six adults and four children) and want to go straight back! Cannot fault anything; perfect location, accommodation, food (both variety and quality), staff at hotel and Thompson staff. The children's entertainment was excellent and the Thompson reps tireless. Would only go with children though as no adult entertainment. In block 5 and not disturbed by any noise after 10.30pm. Rooms well eqipped and spacious. A perfect holiday.

We visited last October with our 10 month old and 3 year old. It really was the most relaxing family holiday we'd ever had because the complex was so we suited for families. The only weaknesses we identified were the hotel coffee (but the local beaches had superb 'local's' coffee shops) and the hotel drinks/wine - but the complex shop was very reasonably priced. Would highly recommend for a family holiday.
