We have recently returned from a wonderful week at the Protur Bonaire. I did lots of research into hotels that would be suitable for our first family holiday with an adventurous 21 month old daughter. We were not disappointed at all. The hotel is spotlessly clean and has excellent facilities for children.
We went All Inclusive, which we would never normally do as we prefer to find a local restaurant, but having a little one meant we didn’t feel we were able to do this yet. We were glad we choose All Inclusive as it was much easier with our daughter. There were plastic plates and cups for the young children, along with small-sized cutlery, so there was no need to take our own. The food was better than expected and there was plenty of choice for each meal. We had breakfast and evening meal in the restaurant, and then lunch either around the Splash Pool or in the Pool Bar (from the All Inclusive Buffet – anything off the menu you had to pay extra for). Our daughter enjoyed the ice creams that were included (just Nestle mini-milk type lollies but big enough for small mouths).
Maybe because of the time of year we went (1st to 8th September) we didn’t find there was a problem with sun beds. There are plenty of beds and if you are not too fussed about where you sat, then it wasn’t a problem.
The pools were freezing during the first part of the holiday, but that’s not the hotel’s fault! We spent most of the time in the smaller pool that was just shallow enough for our daughter to stand up in. She loved the Splash Pool with slides and Pirate Ship too, and it made a nice change to have a wander over to that side of the hotel.
The rooms are absolutely gorgeous and have obviously recently been refurbished. They are much nicer than is shown in the Thomson brochure. My husband was relieved when he saw the room! It was spacious for the three of us, very comfortable and had Freeview channels (including CBeebies). The kitchen was small, but this was fine for us. The bathroom was lovely with a powerful shower over the bath. Our balcony (Room 2313 in Block 2) overlooked a field and as soon as we shut the door behind us, it was silent. We were not bothered by the noise of the entertainment at all.
We are not normally one to partake in hotel entertainment, but on this occasion we did watch the children’s entertainment which started at about 8pm until 8.45pm. It was lovely watching all of the children enjoying themselves, and some got especially excited when Thomson The Dog came out (ours included)! After this time, we would generally go for a walk into Cala Bona, and if our daughter fell asleep in the pushchair, we sometimes went into the Gran Sol hotel for a drink on the terrace (gorgeous). I cannot comment on the entertainment for the grown ups as we never watched it (it’s not our thing really). We didn’t use the Kids Club or Creche as I think our daughter was a bit too young for it.
All in all, we had a lovely week. The hotel, staff and facilities were excellent, and the only thing we could fault was the weather!
