Booked through Thomson Holidays for 23rd - 30th July 2006.

Stayed in Block 3 (partial pool view). 3rd floor.

We had booked this holiday almost a year ago (due to how popular it was and the reports on tripadvisor).

Arrival:

Arrived about 1.30pm. The external view of the Bonaire is quite impressive. Streight into Reception - was sorted immediately and within minutes a member of staff was taking our cases to the room. My Daughter was issued with a kiddies pack.

Pool:

This has to be the highlight and lowlight of the entire holiday. Highlight - has to be one of the biggest pools I have seen - plenty of room for everyone (including all of the boats and lilo's that everyone takes in!!!). Lowlight - If you want a sunbed your towel has to be on the bed by 7.15 am or you have no chance. If you want shade in the form of one of the numerous brolleys then you have to have your bed reserved by 6.15 am (or even earlier)!! I remember looking down one day from our balcony at 5.30am and it was like watching ants sorting out the beds!!!

Pool Bar:

Very friendly Staff - all the waiters work very friendly and always look as through they have just come out the swimming pool as they are soaked in sweat.

Food / Dining Room

The food available is of a very good standard for a Typical Spanish Hotel, however, if you have travelled extensively before (and dont normally take a Spanish type of holiday you may well be disappointed). The waiting staff in the dining room are ok. Value For Money - If I had to come back then I wouldnt pre book the food option but would buy the vouchers from Reception when I wanted to use them as the food did become very repetative!

Entertainment:

The Entertainment Team worked hard, but the external entertainment was very disappointing. There was 4 professional acts during our week. Russian Circus - was good, at times a little slow: E-Box (magician) - wow doesnt get any worse than this! : Madonna Tribute - excellent, get your seat early and dont go shopping when this is on. : Lionel Ritchie - Not my cup of tea.
The weekly Reps show was very good, well organised and better than some of the Professional Acts dodnt miss it.

Apartments

Clean, tidy and basic.

Overall:

These apartments / hotel is classed as 4 star. - Equivalent to a 2 star in the UK. Holiday itself was good, however, value for money - definately NOT. paid over £2,000 for 1 week for 4 of us (due to excessive prices as during school holidays).

We have just returned from our 6th visit and we have already rebooked for next July.
We had a room in block 4,top floor overlooking the pool and sea.
We did have a small problem with ants but a tin of spray soon sorted that out.
The reception staff are always there to help, so a big thank you to Cat,Jo and Jess.
The hotel manager is always around and will stop and chat to anyone wishing to.
The bar staff work very hard and Oskar needs to slow down as he gives it 110%. Pepe,Miguel and Mikel are great.
Thomson reps on the desk are helpful and anyone who has been before will know the smiley face of Helen.
The entertainment reps are LJ Cool ( we love you),Little Leanne(big arsenal fan) and Wacky Wendy (she was there 2 years ago.)
I hope they are back again next year as they are great at their jobs and didn't let the 100f heat stop them.
The hotel food is worth every penny and we didn't have one bad meal in the whole 14 days we were there.
If you fancy a night out, head towards The Kings Head in Sa Coma and Marky Mark will give you a great night of fun.
Also go between now and the end of August and you have the Tottenham coaches out there doing trainning for the kids.
35 euros for 2x90 minute sessions.
We are counting the days until next year.

Here's my review, which I hope persons who haven't been to the Bonaire before might find useful.

I booked the Bonaireafter it was recommended by my sister who had stayed there a couple of years ago with her young family, as well as checking out the reviews from other guests on this website.
I noticed there were other hotels in the area that were getting good reviews, however the Bonaire's just seemed to be consistently good compared to the others.

Anyway, the transfer time from Palma airport to Cala Bona is about an hour, but you can add another 15 minutes on by the time you drop off guests at the other hotels.
The check in procedure at the hotel was fine, the receptionist was helpful and she arranged for our suitcases to be taken to our room.
Our room was on the third floor and overlooked the pool, however there were two lifts which you could use to get up and down.
The room was clean, tidy and spacious.

In the evenings, it can be noisy with the music and voices on the PA system from the stage carrying right across to the rooms. The entertainment goes on until 11pm, then there's about another half hour or so of the reps making announcements etc, before it goes quiet. This didn't really cause us any problem, as our kids got to stay up late and are good sleepers, but if you've got kids that need to be in bed by 9pm and are easily woken, then please ask reception for a quiet room, which are usually the ones facing away from the pool and onto the grass areas at the rear of the hotel.

You'll see from the other reviews that there are numerous activities for the kids to do depending on their age.
Our son, who's 5yrs, went to the "tots club" which is between 10am and noon, where they were entertained with face painting, singing songs and just generally having a good time.
You need to book your kids into this club at 6.30pm the night before on a first come first served basis. You queue (literally) down near reception and the rep was always there prompt and took the names. There's no charge for this club.
Our real find was the creche for our 2yr old daughter. I initially thought that I'd use it only a couple of times during our stay, but ended up using it almost every day. The creche is a spacious, air conditioned room, which is kitted out with lots of soft play toys, paints, colouring in books, train sets etc. It has toilet and changing facilities, as well as a sleep room for kids who need a nap. The fully trained staff, bar none, were absolutely excellent. My daughter doesn't attend nursery yet, so it was the first time we'd left her alone with "strangers." She was a bit teary eyed when we first left her, but the staff were great at distracting her and getting her playing. By the end of our stay, she was asking to go to the creche to play.
The creche is open from 10am - noon, 1pm -3pm and then there's an evening slot as well. We chose the 1pm time, as it kept her out of the worst of the sun and gave my wife and I a chance to relax.
There's a charge of 15 euros per day for this though, perhaps because the girls are all fully trained nursery staff.

There is a sign outside the hotel which shows a supermarket situated 250 metres along the main road towards Cala Millor, so I went there first to get water etc. It's a fair hike, especially if your carrying big bottles of water or coke on a hot day, and I didn't think the "Bip" supermarket was up to much anyway.
If you leave the hotel and head straight down to the beach you'll find a small Spar supermarket, which has all the usual provisions you'll need. It's certainly a lot closer than the other one.
If there's anything you can't find, then if you keep walking, once you've passed the harbour you'll notice there are other, bigger Spars to choose from.
The harbour area is where all the restaurants are situated and there's something to suit everbodys taste and budget if you just look around.

If you come out the hotel and turn left onto the Cala Millor road, there's a stop for the "train" about 400 yards along the road, which will take you through to Cala Millor. The train runs at 10mins past the hour from this stop and is 3 euros for an adult (return). The beach at Cala Millor is large and sandy, ideal if you're a hard core sunbather, but it got a little too hot for our kids and we just spent half a day there.

If you're self catering, you can still eat in the restaurant by buying a voucher at reception. At dinner time it's 12 euros for an adult, half price for kids. Our 2yr old went free. There's a wide choice of salads, hot food and a kids buffet, all well laid out and tasty.

The kids disco is between 8pm - 9pm, after which there's some act on stage for another couple of hours, either acrobats, magicians or tribute bands. None will make Las Vegas, but they were all good and got the audience involved.
The reps also put on a show once a week or so.

The hotel manager was always in attendance around the pool or at reception, checking things over and making himself available for guests to discuss things with.

The Bonaire prides itself in holding the Number 1 slot and I am in no doubt that this has been achieved by the hardworking staff, who seem dedicated to making sure everybody has a good time.

Hope this is of some use to somebody.

Things didn't start well in the Bonaire when we were given a bit of a shabby room with a very odd balcony/ terrace which didn't have any view due to adjoining walls and roofs. We also found our kitchen area had ants, not what you would expect from a 4 star hotel. The next problem was that at around 10.00pm the noise from the on site entertainment in the bar was overbearing, as our room was located directly above it.
When we asked to move, the receptionist was most helpful and gave me the choice of 2 rooms. Our new room was much nicer and seemed generally cleaner and tidier. The balcony overlooked the coast, there were no ants and it was in a seperate block to the bar, so even when the enterntainment was in full swing there was no noise.
We stayed half board and the food at the Bonaire was always very good, although some nights the selection was noticeably better.
The hotel is located very close to the seafront and within easy reach of the larger adjoining resort of Cala Millor. The grounds are extensive with an impressive pool area and outside bar, there are also good sports facillities and an indoor pool / jacuzzi and sauna.
On the whole a nice hotel, good food, good location, great facilities and helpful staff.

First time at the Bonaire, what can we say but Wow!!!!! An absolutely fantastic holiday!
Hotel tremendous, all the staff v friendly, Thomsons reps v helpful, entertainment reps were fantastic, LJ Cool deserves a special mention. An absolute star in the making! So very funny, she had us all in fits of laughter. Hope she will be there next year as we will
be definately going back.
The Bonaire is a most beautiful hotel only a five minute walk to the harbour were you
have the most wonderful choice of restaurants looking out over the Med. Our 4 year old daughter was mesmerised by the whole experience!!
A trip to Pirates is a must! A bit pricey but an experience you will never forget. All in
all the trip to the Bonaire was THE best holiday we have ever had and one that we hope
to repeat for years to come.

We booked this hotel based purely on the reviews on Trip Advisor.com. We have just returned from a week's holiday there with our 5 year old son and can say that we agree with all that has been said previously. If you want to see a 360 degree photo of the place, go to the website [--]. Choose the hotel from the drop down list and click on Virtual Tour. Very informative.

Cala Bona is a quiet resort, but the more lively resorts of Sa Coma and Cala Millor are a stone's throw away if you want a bit more action. Cala Bona itself is just lovely and mainly consists of a harbour surrounded by restaurants. We ate every day either at Smithy's or Janet and John's. These both sound very English and "burger and chips" but in actual fact both places had an extensive menu and I could not fault the food. The surroundings are also fab with a beautiful view of the harbour and the mountains. Fab. Staff at John and Jane's were lovely - really polite and helpful, but not in your face. Average price of a main course was bout 9 Euros but very good value for money.

The beach at Cala Millor is beautiful and is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel which we really enjoyed. However, I can understand that when it gets really hot, the walk can seem longer especially when carrying towels etc but well worth it.

The hotel itself was lovely and the staff very helpful and friendly. The rooms were spotlessly clean and I think the maids came in about 5 times during our stay. If you have young children or want a quiet room I would strongly suggest to ask for a room overlooking the gardens rather than the pool. The entertainments goes on until about 11pm every night and if you want some sleep or have young children then this could be a problem. We asked for a quiet room and ended up above the hotel reception which was fine. A bit of noise from the small road but earplugs soon solved that.

The kids clubs were great, but my only moan is that you have to turn up in person at 5.30pm to sign your child in for the following day's session. This was a real pain on the days we were sight seeing cos we found it a drag having to get back for this. There are 3 clubs daily. 10am - 12noon (free) which you have to pre-book as mentioned above. However the 3.30pm-5.30pm (free) drop off club doesn't need to be booked and we found this easier to use. The 7.30-9.30 sessions (3 Euros) was also really handy if you wanted to go and have an adult meal with no hassle of children. Just be warned that if you go to the Rep's welcome meeting, they do not cover these details and they certainly don't warn you that you have to pre-book. However, it is worth attending the meeting as you are given a registration form to be completed if you use the kids club.

We found the Rep's meeting a waste of time. They didn't really tell us much useful info, they just tried to plug the excursions - all of which were quite pricey so we hired a car and did them independently.

The evening entertainment was above average. They have kids entertainment outside by the pool from 8-9pm and then some sort of tribute act or acrobats for the adults. All sounds rather cheesey, but in actual fact we really enjoyed them and they were very professional. The children have a small play area and a small softplay area to use while the grown ups are watching the show and there are table tennis tables and pool tables as well - all totally free.

All in all we were very impressed with the hotel and it deserves its number one status in Cala Bona. We will go again next year. Absolutely fab for families and to be honest, even if we didn't have our son I would like to go back. After all, you don't have to stay for the entertainment and kids stuff - the hotel is lovely for a base for grown ups. I must admit, we went out of season so in July and August with teenagers and older kids around, the place might take on a rowdier feel, but our week was just fab and I wish I was there right now!!
