We have just returned from a weeks holiday at the Gran Sol. The hotel room we had was lovely looking over the sea. The bar staff at lunch time and evening were absolutely fantastic they are a real credit to Gran Sol. The food at lunch time was also amazing we ate there every lunch and thought it was excellent value for money especially as you get a generous portion. The breakfast was also very good and the lady chef did such a good job all by herself. We had only bed and breakfast so it was nice to be so close to all the different bars and restaurants within two minutes walk. The only negative comments really are we didnt have to expect to pay for the safe in the room as it isnt a cheap hotel to stay in and think this should be included. The pool is lovely however as it is a small hotel when the hotel is fully booked there are not enough beds around the pool and people were getting up at 6am to put towels on the bed this wouldnt be too much of a problem if the beach was nice but like other reviewers have said the beach is very dirty and is ok if you dont want to move from your sun bed all day, also I do think the hotel should think about giving their guests free sun beds on the beach by doing a deal with the beach as you had to pay for beds on the beach and also pay for an umbrella again perhaps if the beach was lovely you wouldnt mind. We very rarely go back to the same place but we did think this hotel was beautiful and will definately go back to this hotel if we was to return to Cala Bona.

Just returned from two week holiday in June at this hotel and we were not disappointed. We agree with all previous reviewers regarding the staff, quality of food, standard of cleanliness etc. We were disappointed with the resort; the beach was really only for sun-bathing as the waters edge was covered in sea-weed and there were rocks in the water. Consequently not many people swam. However, the hotel pool was nice. The bar staff were always available for drinks etc and were very friendly. Turning left out the front door took you to Cala Millor, and turning right took you into Cala Bona and the marina, only a very short walk. However there is a very busy cycle path from Cala Millor to Cala Bona which was painted red and during the day some cyclists use it as a race track and you have to be constantly aware of where you are walking as there is no kerb to remind you of the cycle path. Bit dangerous for children. . Many guests laid out towels as early as 6.30 am to get an ideal spot for sun-bathing. Agree with another reviewer who suggested the dining tables were too close together. Be aware that men are required to wear long trousers for evening dining in the restaurant. There was entertainment two nights a week. The adjacent hotels had more entertainment if that's what you want. We really enjoyed our holiday at this hotel and will return.

Room Tip: We had room 315 3rd floor on corner overlooking beach and pool. Sun in the morning. Lovely views.

Upon arrival in the early hours after a 3.5 to 4 hour delay due to an air traffic control strike from the French, we were greeted by a most helpful night porter/duty manager. He efficiently checked us in and then explained that he had kept the restaurant open and that he had prepared a cold buffet supper for us. We took our cases to our room and went straight back down to the restaurant to find a great selection of cheeses, meats, prawns, bread and drinks waiting for us. This was most welcoming and really appreciated by the two of us.
Back up to our room to quietly unpack we met the first of our niggles.
The were no drawers in the room. Yes, well shelved cupboards and a wardrobe with awkward to remove hangers, but not the almost 100% required drawers which should be in every hotel room in the world.
Keeping on the room niggles the mirror was in the passage to the bathroom where 2 people need to be moving past each other all the time, there was no more smaller mirrors anywhere apart from the bathroom. A handy place would obviously be somewhere in the main part of the room.
A most odd thing was the tea bags were not wrapped in paper, not quite the most hygienic thing to come across, very odd.
The hotel is probably the cleanest we have been in for years, excellent work from this team , very well done. The rooms, the common areas etc. all immaculate.
As previous reviews the location is fantastic with marvellous views over the sea and so handy for the marina and quiet nightlife the resort has to offer.
As previous reviews again , the staff on the main are very friendly with a smile and a passing of the day each time you met any of them.
As previous reviews again, the breakfasts were great, fresh and tasty with a huge choice of everything. I disagree that it needs re arranging as a previous reviewer mentions, it is probably simpler for the reviewer to organise themselves better at breakfast time.
Lunchtime snacks were good value and very tasty although not consistent. ( tuna salad ordered on two occasions were brought with hugely differing amounts of chuna , one nice and acceptable one a liittle mean )
The biggest niggle was the dining room set up. Tables are far too close to one another when all you really want to do on holiday is have a meal with your partner, not a total pair of strangers if you get them on either side of you. Very off putting. Breakfasts were not too bad for this, but evening meal time was terrible for me, trousers must be worn and a slightly high temperature was always evident.
Not having the choice to eat outside is also a major downside to an acclaimed Thomson 5t hotel.
The pool area is small with not much space for all residents to have a bit of privacy. It is however located beautifully.
I have to sign off by saying this is really lovely hotel, in a prime position with excellent standards in most areas although for the reasons mentioned above it is never a 5t standard in our opinion.

We stayed at Gran Sol for 2 weeks in June with our 6 month old daughter and parents and loved it.

Pros

The staff (especially Miguel, Sissi and Maria in the restaurant) - all fantastic, friendly and efficient. The showered our daughter with attention which she loved.

The hotel - spotless and there was usually at least one cleaner visible at all times doing some real cleaning. It's a smaller hotel so is nice and peaceful and you can get to know other guests (if you like).

The room - spacious and very clean. Good aircon and balcony was a lovely sun trap for sun downers.

The food - for a buffet restaurant I don't think they could have made a better effort for breakfast or dinner. The variety was impressive and the food always fresh - a lot of it made to order. A nice touch was the restaurant keeping any unfinished wine for you so that you could enjoy it the next night.

Location - close enough to the other bars and restaurants without them being a nuisance.

Minor Cons

Safe - after paying near enough £3000 for the stay I felt it was very greedy of them to charge an extra 28 Euro to use the safe.

Lunch - we had one meal at lunch time and the food wasn't very inspiring so ventured out for the rest of the holiday.

Noise - we had a street facing room and the noise late at night (past 11pm) could still be heard quite easily.

Beds - only single beds pushed together were available in the street facing rooms. These beds weren't very comfortable and felt quite budget. As mentioned by previous reviewers these beds slid away from the wall when leaning against the headboard.

Parking - there's no parking at the hotel (it's in the pedestrianized area) but there is limited parking (about 8 spaces) at the sister hotel 200 yards away.

Beach - the one in front of the hotel isn't up to much. It's got sand and lovely water but access to the sea is over some rocks. However there is an amazing Blue Flag beach about 15 minutes walk away in Cala Millor.

Sun loungers - if I'm being very picky it would be nice if the mattresses were setup on the sun loungers around the pool in the morning instead of the guests having to do it.

Overall

Something I didn't know before visiting is that Cala Bona (in general) seems to be popular (and geared up for) the older generation i.e. 55 and over. Nothing wrong with that and it's great for a family holiday (and prices are great) but for singletons the night life might leave a bit to be desired.

It's a great small "boutique" hotel (tastefully decorated and covered in marble so not sure how someone could call it "tacky") and I'm not sure moving it to a different area or clearing the rocks is an option.

I would definitely recommend it and more than likely stay in it again.

Room Tip: 216 - balcony was a lovely sun trap for sun downers.

Just got back from staying at this small hotel! This was our third time there and may I say it didn't disappoint. Very clean, friendly hotel with lovely breakfast choice. We had b & b so can't rate the evening meal! There was always room by the pool whatever time you turned up! Our bedroom was at the back near the street and of course a sea view is always better but no noise at night. Very happy and will go back again!

This small hotel is wonderful.

The staff without exception are fantastic, warm and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. We asked about Mallorcan dishes on the menu as it was largely British food and the following evening Maria and Miguel and the restaurant staff had arranged for some superb local dishes which were a delight.

We paid extra for a junior suite (only four in the hotel) and it is so worth it. We had the ground floor suite (which we have had before) which is fabulous as it has a patio with sunbeds and parasol (handy for when it is busy around the pool) with a gorgeous outlook over the lawn and beach to the sea - literally a stone's throw. Housekeeping is excellent with clean towels everyday and sheets changed regularly. Pool towels are also provided along with thoughtful touches like fresh fruit and flowers and lots of toiletries.

Would highly recommend this clean and quiet hotel - we had two evenings with low key entertainment which were very good (a guitarist and a singing duet). Other evenings were spent walking along the promenade either towards Cala Bona harbour or Cala Millor, both busier and good for people watching.

If you want a lively resort with lots of shopping, Cala Bona will not be for you but there are plenty of day trips available and the local bus service is great (even better when you take the time to learn a little Spanish although not necessary).

We arrived home last night and have already booked for next year to secure a suite at our favourite hotel.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for a junior suite as you get a separate lounge area and sea view with balcony or...
