“Wont go back”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

Just come back from a lovely week away here the hotel was clean and most of the staff friendly. however I was disappointed by the lack of respect for the English or anyone that isn't German to be honest! The Germans were treated better than anyone else and because of this thought it was ok to be rude to you as soon as they see you are English. I don't have a problem with Germans as a whole but this put a dampener on my holiday as I was sick of being walked in to and pushed out of the way and basically treat like the ants running around my room. Cala d'Or is a lovely place and I will go back, but to a different hotel. one thing I will say good was the young man that worked in the photo shop on site and took my amazing pictures on the beach was a credit to the hotel and should be recognised for this.

Room Tip: Don't stay by the stage area

From Palma Airport our transfer to this hotel was 1hr 40 mins because of other drop offs and we also sat outside Palma for 1hr awaiting two passengers who never turned up. Anyway we arrived at the resort quite late at night and was given a picnic box with some sandwiches, two bottles of water and two pieces of fruit as the dining room was closed. We were given a different colour of "all inclusive" band to the party which had arrived at the same time because they were German. The apartment was clean and a good size. There was no entertainment that night so we had a couple of drinks and off to bed. Found out the next day that we were not actually in Cala d'or but Cala Egos and that Cala D'or was a 6 euro each way taxi ride away as the bus service was quite poor. The next couple of days were very warm but entertainment in the resort was not great for adults but the kids seemed to be having a great time.
There was a bad thunderstom halfway through our week when we had no power, trees came down and some flash flooding. When the storm passed and we could assess the damage I was surprised that nobody had been hurt as at least 4/5 trees had been uprooted in the complex. The staff worked tirelessly to clear the debris to get the restaurant back up and running. A tree was in the middle of the outside eating area. The food in the restaurant was not very good and not always as warm as it should have been. The staff managed to get the place back to "normality" within a couple of days. However, the Cala Egos/Cala D'or resorts restaurants, bars and shops all closed on 31 October and the place became a ghost town.
We never had a conversation with anyone else at the complex except the girl in reception and the bar staff. I would not go back to this hotel as it was closing for the season the day after our return home, and as previously reported it seemed to cater predominantly for the German contingent.

After we had booked this hotel we read the reviews (mmmmm maybe before next time?)...We usually take reviews with a pinch of salt as one man's trash is another's treasure etc. We read about the place being over run with Germans and found this to be true. We didnt think this would be a problem as we are normally happy to get along with anyone. The Germans and their children were arrogant and rude, their lack of manners were embarrassing to witness at times. The staff were dismissive when there was a problem with our studio room ( totally unsuitable for a family with teenagers....too small and shabby in parts) we were informed by many that they spoke no English but later found this to be untrue. The Germans had different colour wrist bands and given 5 star treatment and we felt like poor relatives in comparison. All entertainment was in German including the kids club and was rubbish. The food was fresh and varied with fish, cheese and delicious veal. Lots of salads and tasty breads. The desserts were disappointing at best with blancmange style slop of various colours. The ice cream and fresh fruit saved the day for us.A fair choice of drinks at the bar and even slush for the kids. Snacks available were hamburgers, fries, hot dogs and toasted sandwiches by the pool. Picnics could be ordered if travelling out the next day.
The resort of Cala Eagos was small and quiet with a few shops and restaurants, car hire and a lovely sandy beach. There was a little train into Cala D'or which was a larger resort with many shops etc. You can walk to Cala D'or by road in about 40 mins or shortcut by the marina for around 25.Trips seemed expensive, starting at around 45 euros each person. We hired a car for 100 euros for 3 days and went round the island. I wish we'd hired the car for the whole week and saved the transfer money. We went to the Dragon Caves in Porto Cristo. (14 euros each)....Fascinating caves with a short classical concert and even shorter boat ride.....
One day we drove through the mountains and the views were spectacular. We spent a day at Palmanova on the beach and it was fabulous. We went to the market at Inca (THURS) and found lots of stalls selling things like leather bags, scalves, wooden goods, shoes, fresh fruit and veg, towels and even budgies!
We might return to Cala Eagos and Majorca some day but not this hotel. Not the worst hotel that we have stayed at and the biggest shame is that with better staff training and updating this review would have been vastly improved.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view and unless your children are very young don't go for a tiny studio room like...

Great hotel/apartments...clean and spacious...grounds/pools/food/drink, could personally all be 4* and above...for the price its the best weve stayed in during school holiday time...
As for European members, who cares...
We were all polite to each other and friendly...if there were any ignorance from our European conterparts im sure there were loud and obnoxious brits there too,to overide them..
As for the staff, we cannot praise them enough...during our stay there was, what I can only describe as a small hurricane in which eleven trees were snap in half..either onto buildings into pools or onto pathways...the staff all rallied together to make sure ALL the guests were safe and secure before starting the biggest and quickest clean up ive ever witnessed...storm started Tuesday late afternoon by Wednesday night all back to normal.....all in all a fabulous place and hotel....maybe next time go earlier in the year to guarantee good weather....

It would be an injustice to the hotel to leave the previous review headlining over the winter until next season. Unfortunate if the room didn't meet their requirements, but the last review is a million miles away from my experience in August.

Staff - Professional, helpful and attentive and always service with a smile.

Food - On a par (if not better) than 4* hotels that I have stayed in (overseas & in UK).

Drinks - Plentiful, generous measures & draught San Miguel ...... on the money.

Location - 60 seconds to gorgeous (albeit small) beach & 2 mins to Cala Egos.

Rooms - Everything you need, including large balcony & very clean (no air con - not a disaster).

Atmosphere - Friendly & relaxed

Guests - Mostly German with mixed other Europeans - xenophobes stay away, everyone else will enjoy.

Wristbands - I will put this bone of contention to bed. The hotel & staff do not differentiate between nationalities. German guests who book through Club Calimera (German tour operator) receive a blue Club Calimera band, simple as that, advertising at its best. Everyone receives the same high level of service.

Sunbeds - Plenty, even with the Germans in high season. Brits were the worste towel protagonists anyway.

Pools - 3 - Splashpool which my 2 girls (age 3 & 7) loved. Large pool (deep) & small kids pool. All were clean & uncrowded.

Myself, wife & kids loved this hotel & have already booked again (unusual for me) for the first 2 weeks next August. Amazing value!!!!!!

Club Calimera, thanks for a great family holiday (same room again 4010 would be much apprecited).

Firstly, this makes me very sad and mad to have to write this review as I normally have an amazing experience of hospitality abroad, when I read previous reviews good/bad I figured we would give the hotel a chance as I've been to hotels before that have had a few bad reviews and they've been great, little did I know how bad a decision this would be this time...

So, when we arrived we were rudely directed by the reception staff to our room/dungeon, we were told any questions or info we needed would be provided in the room, (this was not provided) I felt physically sick when we saw what we were supposed to stay in for the next 10days, there was not even a window in the 'room' (beware of block 3 ) ..my mum also arrived at same time for 4 days and luckily even though we requested a room beside us she was given a room at opposite end of the complex to us which was a slightly better 1 bedroom apartment... I went to complain at reception about our room situation and I was basically given the cold shoulder and brushed off with a language barrier, I eventually got them to agree to giving us mums room for the rest of stay so we could have some fresh air circulating the room for our 4yr old...

So the next day we saw what we had read about on tripadvisor...the Germans, we have nothing personal against them but the majority at this hotel where completely rude and greedy...they did get catered for in every shape form and way, from arrival they got special treatment-directions to another hotel that they could use there all inclusive bands in, there kids got a club calmeria backpack with goodies, a guest service rep walked around the pool daily checking up with them and giving them leaflets/vouchers etc for trips/excursions, the kids club was all in German,nw hitch was a bit frustrating for my daughter who kept trying it out, but came back after 30mins because no1 understood her.... what I must say positively is that the entertainment staff deserved credit as they where amazing day and night with the kids and adults (if you where German)

The pool side and pool water could really be doing with a good clean, not once when we were there was it hosed down and cleaned, rooms where not much better we had to go for 4 days In a row without any maids service, we had to keep going to get towels changed ourselves. And when we wanted to keep our room on our last day for late checkout we were told for 7days to 'come back tomorrow..' To eventually get turned down as last minute booking meant hotel was fully booked which I very much doubt in October and Looking around the hotel this was very much untrue.

The kids pool is a good feature on paper and in photos and our daughter enjoyed it when she wasn't cutting her little feet on the rough floor surface of it because it's so badly eroded/damaged ...there was also a quiet area pool which everyone was welcome to lay at, it was nice in afternoon when the little one was on her nap time with big cushioned 4post beds (more comfy than the rooms) to lay on, this is the one area we met another English speaking family, which we could recognise due to there purple coloured wrist bands.

Please also be warned the complex is extremely poorly lit in the evening which is an awful hazard to get to your room or around the pool area to the bar. And we heard every noise, doors slamming, people stamping up and down stairs, people up from 7am shouting, a Memebr of staff out every morning with a leaf blower at 7am (not my Idea of a relaxing holiday)...There is also a restaurant to stay clear of near hotel Napolis, it is cockroach invested :-( very very unpleasant experience.

The food in the restaurant was ok, nothing very exciting to report about, snacks at the poolside consisted of pizza, chips, toastie, and burger, please be warned for children there is no icecream available until 4pm if your kid wants it's before then u must pay for it and even at that there's a mad rush for it as there is just a limited amount at 4.

One good feature of the hotel is its location close to a beautiful beach, literally across the road and it's absolutely gorgeous...

I figured a holiday is what you make it and we deserved our family holiday as does everyone that has saved all year for it, but this hotel just kept putting a dampner on it, I don't understand why they sell or accept English speaking customers to this hotel knowing they discriminate against us and treat us very poorly, never been so disappointed before like this, so please please think twice before booking this hotel.
