“Great Holiday”
Reviewed 17 February 2014

Had a lovely holiday in June as we love Thomsons Gold.Hotels, well situated as we like to go for walks and have the choice to go and visit other tavernas.Room was spotless, food as ever in a
Thomson Gold Hotel excellent.
Two only complaints if you like to lie on a sunbed around the pool it can be very cramped so we found that the sunbeds on the grass area were very spacious and the nearby beach is quite small but clean
Great place, if like us you want a chilled out holiday in a quiet location.

I travelled to the Hotel Rocamarina with my girlfriend for a week in July 2013. We booked the hotel fairly last minute through Thomson and were on a fairly tight budget, so expectations were low, but the hotel met all our needs and exceeded our expectations.

We did not pay any extra for sea/pool view, and found our room to be on the 2nd floor on the opposite side to the pool. Whilst there wasn’t much of a view (a road, trees, and the shops in the distance), it was still pleasant to sit out on the balcony, which was of a good size with two chairs and a table, and relax in the evenings. Rooms were spacious and well equipped, and the only issue we had was with our air conditioning which was temperamental and didn’t work on occasions – however this was due to a fault affecting the whole system and was repaired quickly by the hotel.

The pool was much larger than it looks on photos, and even in the height of summer we had no problem getting sun loungers by the pool, even late in the morning. On the odd occasion we couldn’t get a lounger get a lounger, we were able to get them either on the raised balcony area, or over in the garden. On the whole sitting round the pool was relaxing during the day, mainly due to the Thomson Gold meaning there were no kids. The only issues we found were when music was played around the pool, which was often loud and distracting when trying to read, or when activities were going on. However, these were only for short periods, and some activities we joined in with such as pool volleyball and the daily quiz. The entertainment staffs from Thomson were extremely friendly and enthusiastic, whilst at the same time not being in your face trying to get you to join in if you didn’t want to.

The location of the hotel is very good, a 2 minute walk from the beach, although this is very small and loungers and umbrellas cost extra and on a couple of occasions we noticed small jellyfish in the water. The small town with numerous restaurants, bars, and supermarkets is 2 minutes away too. From the Hotel it is also easy to get out on a inexpensive day trip, as a large daytrip boat stops just by the beach. We went out to Parc Natural Mondrago for the day for a change of scene and to visit the spectacular cove and beach there, which cost about 15-20 euros each, and is well worth doing.

The food at the hotel was very good, and for what we paid we couldn’t have asked for more. My girlfriend can’t eat gluten and they were extremely accommodating of this, bringing her gluten free bread during breakfast and dinner, without us evening having to ask by the end. The food is of good quality – not exceptional, but well above what we expected from the price we paid. We were especially impressed by the grill where your meat is cooked in front of you, and there was always good variation of food and we were never left hungry! The wine in the restaurant was also reasonably priced, and if you did not finish the bottle they held it for you until the next night. You keep the same table for your whole stay, and if this is inside you can go at any time which we did, or in two sittings if you opt to eat outside. There is the option to share tables with other guests if you are sociable which we saw many people did, however we opted for a table for 2 which was no problem at all.

A minor concern for my girlfriend and I before we went was that we were 21, and reviews generally said that the guests at the hotel were of an older crowd. Whilst this was generally the case, there were other young couples and families at the hotel, so we didn’t feel like the only young people there. All the other guests at the hotel were so frienedly, especially one couple who let us use their room to shower the evening we were departing for a night flight and had checked out of our room early! The only down side to an slightly older crowd was that evenings shows and singers and activities were catered towards an older audiences. In the evening we usually went out in the evening to the bar opposite the hotel, which the hotel owns, for a quiet drink, into the town to one of the livelier karaoke bars, walked down to the beach, or to the old fort about a 5-10 minutes’ walk away which is highly recommended. One evening there was also a large evening market in the town, selling various crafts, jewellery, bags and gifts, which we enjoyed going to, though we only stumbled across this as it was winding down as the hotel hadn’t advertised it at all. Unfortunately the main marina is a long walk, about an hour’s round trip all the way round, and part of the way along an unlit pathway, which meant that it is not somewhere you can easily walk to in the evening.

Overall the hotel was perfect for our holiday. It was extremely relaxing, and for the price we paid, to get a hotel of this quality, service, and cleanliness with good food half-board was a minor miracle. I am not surprised that so many people we spoke to at the hotel kept coming back year after year!

We have stayed at The Rocamarina at least 10x.Our reasons for doing so are simple.
The Hotel is Excellent, run by a Family and a Large Staff who could not be more helpfull.
The accomodation is spotless, the Food is to die for and of a great variety.
The Entertainment is Professional, not like some hotels. The Location is peaceful but not isolated.
We shall be returning for our 2x annual R&R in 2014.

1st time here, on rec. of our friends who had been in July, & whom accompanied us this time (no, they weren't our carers!); 3-10 Oct, lovely hotel, friendly, helpful, courteous & efficient staff; room (221) was very pleasant, spacious, good shower with solid shower screen (better than those shower curtains which just wrap themselves round you!); room was on ground floor which was actually not a problem reall, garden outlook at opposite side to pool, got sun late afternoon, which was pleasant to sit in; dining facilities were fine, once you got used to the system, made 'friends' with maitre'd Juan, who looked after us well, changing our table & sitting (there are 2 sittings) to fit in with our busy evening schedule one night; we asked for & were allocated a table outside overlooking pool (the weather was still warm enough to sit out most evenings), handy for the evening entertainment which used the outdoor stage (go 2nd sitting & get this type of table to ensure a good position for the rest of the evening); weather cooled a little last 2 x nights & some rain, entertainment was brought inside, which meant things became a little cramped & not quite sufficient seating for everyone, so 2nd sitting diners had very little chance to get a table inside...not really a great problem but slightly annoying. Most coped with this.
Food was good, albeit predictable, varied, something for all tastes, puddings were superb, waiters/waitresses very attentive & polite, lovely Polish girl who spoke many languages, put us to shame really! Thompson staff/reps busy & helpful, entertainment was varied & reasonable standard, no complaints really, comedian was superb; hotel was very clean, rooms were cleaned & tidied every day, spotless, thank you house-keeping team, very efficient & always a cheery greeting in the corridor. This hotel is well run & has a lovely atmosphere, most guests were friendly too & not clicky (unlike our previous holiday earlier in July at similar type Thompson Los Gigantes Hotel, Tenerife);
Have I said Rocamarina had a lovely atmosphere, oh yes, well I'll say it again...!
Not a criticism but we were the youngest here (we are early 50's) although the age range is usually broader than just >60yrs, we were informed...we had to laugh at the 9am race for the best sun beds, which was amusing to say the least, some impressive 'sprints' by seniors to achieve the ultimate goal - we English do this so well, sadly (embarrassingly well, actually), why, oh why, oh why, do you need to do this? I noted beds with towels on unused throughout the day - it really is pathetic! Varied locations for catching the sun within the hotel grounds, loved the decking sun area above the pool, which seemed popular & very quiet, if you wished to chill & relax you could, if you wanted to play games, etc, you could (we didn't ....enough of that at home). If you want outside bars & places to eat there are plenty, locally & in cala'dor & porto petra. Weather (early Oct) was still nice & warm, actually unusually high humidity 1st 2 x days, some rain on 2 x evenings, quite a bit of cloud most days, which was not unexpected for this time of the year, really. We enjoyed exploring the countryside, picking fresh almonds & figs.
Hotel is handy for local beach & is only a short, pleasant stroll around the bay away from Cala D'or. Would we go back? Most certainly, but probably in June/July to ensure better/hotter weather.
