“Nice Family Base”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

This was our 4th stay in Cala D'or (spanning 22 years) and 1st time in Cala D'or Playa. We had 8 nights in Maricel Apartments in Port Pollensa before arriving here so we were hoping the apartments would be as good. We were on the second floor and had a poor view, the rooms were spacious and ample for 3 but storage might be limited for 4 in an apartment. The over the bath shower was pretty poor due to the lack of pressure. The rooms weren't cleaned daily despite what people state (3 out of 9 days not cleaned). It had kitchen facilities but we always eat out and just use the fridge (which we had to have changed but this was done within 2 minutes of calling reception). The reception staff were v nice and helpful and always answered any queries. The bar staff were also friendly but the vast majority took their own drink round pool due to the prices at bar. The activities for my lad (14) were fairly good and he joined in the shooting, waterpolo, football etc. The location is fairly central and takes 10-15 minutes to the square. The 2 x beaches are easily accessed via the back gate of the apartments (left to Ferrera and right to Cala Gran), and we liked the Cala Gran beach as it was red hot when we were there and the breeze was lovely. There's a nice bar at the Cala Gran Beach and also a handy hints is to take a cool bag for drinks! We ate out in all the nice restaurants on a night in the square and the Marina (favourites - Aquarius, Zocola & S'Ancora at the Marina and Don Leone, Gusto's (pizzas) in the square). We love Cala D'or, it's lovely for couples/families and will be back in the future and would possibly stay in the Cala D'or Playa Apartments again.

Room Tip: get a refurbished room with a shower room

Just back from a 12 night stay at these apartments. Travelled with my husband and children age 6 & 7. I booked this hotel on previous reviews saying how wonderful everything is here. We as a family were sadly disappointed. My children were bored here during the day. The entertainment during the is terrible! T-shirt painting all day for 2 of the days! I'm sorry but how the hotel can class this as entertainment is beyond me. The rest of the time it was pure awful, never on time and terrible activities. What on earth do the four entertainment staff actually do??? One of them could hardly speak any English, not very good when the complex was mainly English!! We resorted to throwing coins into the pool for them to get to pass a bit of time. I've never been on holiday before and the kids asked if they can go to the room to watch TV! They don't even watch much TV at home. Bored is not the word! We found kids messing around in the hotel, obviously cause they had nothing better to do. People who think this hotel is amazing obviously don't know any better! Everyone we spoke to had children who had ear infections!
The only positive we got from this hotel was the beautiful room and the beautiful grounds! Such a shame as this hotel could be wonderful if they changed a few things. I would not recommended this hotel to anyone and definitely won't be back. Maybe we've been spoilt with our previous choices of hotel!

Because the pool did not get cleaned twice in our 10 days and there were a lot of ear infections. Whether this was linked I don't know ? The animation team looked disinterested to me (except ceaser) and the fact their English was very poor did not help. Overall though dont let me put you off we met some very nice people (staff and guests Including many north of Watford ) and we had a great time and def would return.

This is the 4th time we have come here since1999 when our kids were smallies. Now with a 6 year old we decided to return to the tried & tested for entertainment, kiddies club etc. we were not disappointed in any way, from checking in to leaving this was a great place to stay. The pool is perfect for all ages & sizes. Also it was great to see that the Cala D'Or playa has progressed to buffet breakfast , half or full board , air conditioned rooms & a huge improvement on the apartment itself. Thanks for a great experience .

Room Tip: We ask for block B rooms 22 to 25, all ground floor facing pool or garden, very safe.

We are just back from our first trip to this hotel. I had read the reviews and wasnt disappointed. I found it a little hard at first to find my bearings as regards the best supermarket etc.. Hadnt realised how close the supermarket at the roundabout was and how much cheaper it was than the other one. Apartment was lovely, overlooking a garden. Nice cool balcony. Lovely fluffy white towels. big shower. All in all well pleased with everything.

Just a couple of things I wanted to share, hence the quick review:

The sunbeds with umbrellas were going very early in the morning. We needed one yesterday as we would be out in the sun with the baby until collection time and were down at the pool at 7.30 a.m and got the last one. I was glad to be going at that stage. getting crazy.

There was a couple of kids and an adult complaining of ear infections. If you are going, make sure to pick up those little silicone things for the kids ears. (the ones you mould) might save you a trip to the doctor!!. Also, there were a couple of tummy upsets too. My own daughter fell ill just before we came home as did my son who felt queazy. I hadnt packed motilium. A trip to the doctor I think I heard was €63 if you didnt have your E111 (or its equivlalent). Make sure it is in date or renewed.

Just one final thing- there were tiny little insects now and again and were inclined to get into food if left around (they managed to do so into the babys formula milk and so it had to be thrown out- yugh) so again, its a hot country, these things are to be expected - just keep everything in sealed jiffy bags.

All in all, a great holiday, would definitely recommend the apartments, and the staff, both at the reception and the bar. the entertainers were great, and yes, I will go back sometime. Its not the cheapest of holidays as food even in the supermarket is not that cheap. I hope that the above info helps, this review is after all for the benefit of others.

Oh, finally, take the choo choo.... outside the back gate, times from reception, the stop is number 11. There are 12, and it goes around and around the same streets a couple of times, down by the marina and also passes the big Eroski - so you can even jump off there and get a taxi back.

Room Tip: Block B. Overlooks the garden. nice and quiet. Not too hot either.

This was out 3rd visit and it did not disappoint! The apartmens and complex as always was very clean and well maintained. We had a newly refurbished room which was lovely - the new shower rooms are fab and everything in the apartment is brand new ths year. We had to wait for our room on arrival for just less than a couple of hours but did not mind as the cleaner was in there the whole time - they seem to give the apartmens a good deep clean when previous occupants move out. The bookings team really do there best to try and allocate your requested room and I know some people have moaned that this is not true but you have to appreciate its peak season the apartments are full and almost everyone has a room request! Our requested top floor room in the sun was not available and I was a little disappointed at first but the room they gave us in block b garden facing was perfect and the shaded balcony was heaven in the heat wave we had!
There are plenty of sunbeds and managed to get them most days when going to the pool after lunch. However as always same bodies on same sunbeds day in day out but if that's what you like then fine but it is annoying when they are left unattended with towels on whilst people go off out! One day a row of beds were left empty for hours whilst they went out on the boat trip - shame on you - you know who you are!!
The animacion team have grown this year and they have built a new outdoor stage - they seemed to do a great job with the kids. If I have to find one fault then I would say no need for water polo everyday. The men get a bit over excited and competitive and it's not always safe for little ones in the pool!
The apartments are in a quiet residential area in nice gardens away from any noisy bars. For the price you pay they are extremely good value when you compare prices to other properties in the area. You can take the short walk into town two ways where you will find lots of restraunts. Highly recommend this year Aquamarinia - very good value and nice food. Old favorites are Indiana johns and La Sivina.
No hesitation in going back to these apartments - missing them already.
Would advise people to book direct - no problems whatsoever. I feel you get the best service and prices. The hotel organize transfers for you, our taxi driver was waiting for us when we came through baggage collection and we were checking in 50 mins later :)
Bottom line - fantastic 3 star accomodation - a gem for the price you pay

Room Tip: Block b seemed quieter than the main complex - new refurbed rooms are lovely Book direct!

Wa booked with Thompson apart from no tickets arriving they sorted it ok all went well.First time for 18 years since we have been in August so we were a bit apprehensive. The apartments were very good, dish cleaners, tea towels were unexpectedly supplied. There were plenty of dishes, fridge freezer, combi microwave and hob. The rooms were comfortable although there were 2 of us in a 4 bed apartment and there isn't a lot of wardrobe space. We were room 115 ,it was quiet overlooking an adjoining resort and a bit of garden. The maid cleaned most days. The pool area was noisy with kids enjoying themselves. There is a water feature which is a great idea came on every hour and you could go in it and cool off. Kiddies pool ,whirlpool and main pool was clean .the pool area was very busy and sun beds soon went ,but around 9ish staff came round and removed towels with no occupants great idea. The restaurant was ok seemed to cater for the kids, but we went to the Spanish night it was good value and enjoyable.A large beer cost 3.50 euros .The entertainment staff were very busy and friendly ,working with the kids a lot. Some guests booked direct said it was cheaper and air con was supplied free.Overall plenty of amenities ,friendly, staff, good location, about 5 mins walk to 2 beaches and 5/10 mins to restaurants and comfortable. The local small shops were more expensive,if you walked outside, straight up the road to a small roundabout, you find a supermarket that the locals use ,at least half the cost .

Room Tip: Avoid the pool area,we were in a block that seemed slightly outside room 115.
