“Cala D'or Playa -yes, Cala D'or -no.”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

Pleasantly surprised with these apartments, we booked a cheap deal via Jet2 Holidays (Jet2 -couldn't fault them, flights on time and hassle free transfers).

For the amount we paid I didn't have high expectations but these apartments were fantastic. I emailed beforehand and requested 2 apartments next to each other for myself and other family -this request was granted and we were located in block B on the second floor (The block only has 3 floors and is low rise so steps were not a problem but there is an efficient lift -great for the pushchair/shopping etc).
I would say block B would be quieter than block A as some of the rooms in block A seem to overlook the pool/stage area. Although I have to say the apartments were very quiet at night time, guests are advised by signs placed in all communal areas to keep the noise down and the majority of people respect this -although our stay was in September so not sure if this is the case in busier times.

These apartments are very much a place for families with young kids, my daughter thoroughly enjoyed herself and there was plenty to keep her occupied with the splash park, play area, bouncy castle and the animation team. A special mention for the animation team as they work very hard day and night to keep all guests entertained, the kids loved them and they have all the time in the world for them -my daughter was delighted with their dancing and especially loved the choco choco latte song! Well done guys.

Our rooms were 126 and 127 -both apartments were spotlessly clean and comfortable. We did not have to pay any additional money for the air con (I think it depends which operator you book through as to whether it's included) the air con works great but as the norm all doors must be closed and the key card in the slot. You do have to pay extra for wifi but this was expected and I think we paid about 24 euros for the week (although wifi is free in the majority of the resorts restaurants -ask for the code they will give you it).

A bonus with these apartments is the balconies are really spacious and got the sun on them in the afternoon which was great for me to catch a few more rays while the little one was napping.
The rooms were cleaned, towels replaced and beds made daily, and the cleaning staff are really friendly. In fact all the staff we came across are friendly, everyone has time for a hello and make a fuss of the children.

All areas of the pool and grounds were also very clean. We were self catering but did eat lunch a few times in the pool cafe and food was very nice and reasonably priced -grilled chicken sandwich very tasty and they also do decent coffee.
We stayed in early September and never had a problem finding a sunbed, extra beds are stacked up so you if you can't find a spot you can always get a bed and make your own space.

The apartments are also in a good location, a few mins walk into the centre and a further 5 mins to the square of restaurants.

We would go back to these apartments in a flash but not Cala D'or -although fine for a weeks stay the resort has a very much Brits abroad feel to it and we found it a bit tacky for our taste. Non the less you can get a decent meal but if you are looking for some authentic Mallorcan charm then Cala D'or is not for you.
The restaurants all seem to try and hedge their bets and offer a vast majority of cuisines from Mexican, Thai, Italian, Chinese and Indian all on one menu -slightly odd but hey ho keeps everyone happy I suppose (shout out to Indiana Johns Restaurant as I had an amazing Thai green curry there).

The marina is slightly more upmarket but not much to do after your meal.

I would certainly recommend these apartments to people but just to be aware the resort smacks slightly of Benidorm (minus the mobility scooters!).

We were greeted with a bottle of water at 3am in the morning, receptionists were all lovely. Our apartment was fantastic, looked almost brand new and a good size for our family of 4. I have visited this place 15 years ago but the whole place had been extended and refurbished to a good standard. The only let down was we couldn't get a sunbed after 7am!! This forced us to the local beach which is lovely but unfortunately in August, it was too crowded before 2pm. This is my 16th visit to Cala D'or and the whole town is still lovely, more restaurants have opened but the cost of a meal has risen unfortunately, All the staff were fantastic, including the maids who all made the effort to chat to you. Apartments were cleaned to a high standard and towels replaced when you wanted. We were self catering which I think is the better option as the restaurant for breakfast is quite small and cramped, Entertainment was good when they had it but most people ventured into the town which is a 2 minute walk. Shame as they were entertaining a handful of people every night. Swimming pool was always crowded with children just entertaining themselves in the jacuzzi (adults only). But overall its a great place for self catering and a good base for exploring Cala D'or and the island.

Room Tip: We were in the new block C, room 320 which had a lovely garden view. The whole place is quite after...

Stayed for the 2 m&s time this may. Booked directly with the hotel and they will pick you up from the airport. All very easy.

Rooms are clean, maids are lovely. Entertainment staff are fab, they love the kids and keep the occupied all day with painting, game, drawing etc! No extra costs involved. Evening entertainment is hit or miss.

Good at the bar is great value for money especially if u didn't want to go out . Worth a try.

Pool is great and the kids love the splash area. Beaches very close and stunning.

Have to try the tropical gardens for night time entertainment, tribute acts, drinks reasonable.

Great restaurants are, Indiana johns, Texas steak house, barloventa, difference!

Myself and my family have been visiting these apartments now for several years and really enjoy our stays each year . The apartments are in a fantastic location with everything just a short walk away . Rooms are of a decent size , they are clean and everything is provided in them to make a good self catering holiday. Food at the bar / restaurant is of good quality at decent prices . All staff are friendly especially the entertainment staff. Always plenty going on for the adults and children ( water aerobics is a must ) . The little waterpark is brill and was enjoyed by everyone , the pool is also lovely although a lot of children were coming down with ear infections , I no this has been a problem every year as my daughter caught one a few years ago so this year I took a swimming head band with me and this prevented any infection occurring . Lastly we enjoyed it so much that the day after we got home we booked to go back for next year as many do .

Room Tip: Block b first or second floor

Our party consisted of two adults & 3 children aged 15, 7 & 3 years old (all girls) and our holiday was from 22/08 till 04/09.

We booked directly with the hotel & found correspondence quick & co-operative. Upon confirming our booking we were required to pay 20% with the balance being payed the day before we travelled.

As with our previous holiday we booked a private transfer with JANERBUS, which cost €210, including child seats. Travel time from the airport took about 35-40mins.
We arrived at the apartments at midday and the reception was quiet and we received prompt & polite service. However, we were told that because our eldest daughter was 15 she was classed as an adult and we were requested to pay an additional fee. Fortunately, I had a copy of our booking which clearly stated the children's ages & the cost and to be fair they agreed, without fuss, to honour the booking.

Prior to our arrival we had requested a room in Block B on either the 2nd or 3rd floor. Our room was on the 2nd floor of block B facing out onto the adjacent apartments & garden area, so we were very happy. Of the 116 apartments in the complex, I counted about 20 which had pool views. So I feel you need to be realistic when when placing your requests. I have seen the photos of the basement apartments & feel that if these should be offered at a reduced rate to all the others.

Ours was a 'standard' apartment and we found it to be clean & well kept, although it did require a bit of a makeover. As there were five of us, we did find that we had limited storage space. One large wardrobe in the bedroom (plenty of hangers), two bedside tables & a dressing table. We placed the extra bed in the bedroom and whilst it was a little cramped, we found the space quite manageable.

The living area was adequate and my daughter didn't complain about sofa bed, I won't go into the details as you can view all this on the website. One thing I will say is that although we were half board I think it will be a struggle if you were self catering as the hob & sink area is quite cramped. There was also no drain board and you had to rely on an absorbent mat under the rack.

As mentioned, we stayed half board and whilst we found the food to be edible, there was limited choice and often we struggled with getting the kids to eat and you often found the food to have dried up under the heat lamps.

We never had any issues with any of the staff during our stay. A small hardworking team who were always happy to please and we would like to thank Rudy, Iñaki, Claudia, Andrea & Melany for making it such a pleasant stay. As mentioned in other reviews the prices are pretty high but we never found them to be extortionate. We had read about a lot of kids getting ear infections from the pool & took precautions. Whilst we were there we heard further stories of several kids with ear infections but never once seen any maintenance guys checking the quality of the pool water. I have rated overall cleanliness as 'average' & this is purely down to the pool. All other communal areas & the apartments were kept very clean.

Our small children loved the kids club & the Animación team. Once again, many thanks to Magda, Jessi, Edwin & Maximo. However, a note for the team, some of sketches in the 'comedy' show we found to be too sexually provocative considering the young captive audience and we felt they were totally inappropriate.

I'm afraid we were not blown away by the resort. In recent years our holidays have been to the North of the island, Puerto Pollensa & the Port of Alcudia, both of which have huge stretches of beaches . We only visited the beaches at Cala Esmerelda, Cala Gran & Cala D'or and whilst they very scenic they we were small & very busy. One thing I would like to point out to the elderly or those who have a disability. If you exit the apartment from the rear, the road which leads into the town is quite hilly & the pavements are in need of repair.

All in all, we loved the apartments but more than likely will not return because we were not that keen on the resort, however, never say never and once again, many thanks to all the staff at The Cala D'or Playa Apartments

We met my daughter, son in law and the grandchildren for a week of their 2 week stay. Although this is not our usual type of holiday to say we had a great time is an under statement. Fantastic for the children, close to the beach, shops and restaurants. The children enjoyed the entertainment however not so great for the adults.
Upon arrival at 02.30 am we asked the receptionist if there was any where we could get water and milk for a cuppa and they provided us with both at no charge. We requested a room near to our family which we received and got an apartment that had been updated. The resort is clean and staff are friendly and helpful.
Plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas so no problem if you fancy a lay in.

Room Tip: Block B 123

We had a lovely time staying here. A good sized pool and there seemed to be enough sun beds if you get up early to reserve them!
There could have been a bit more storage space for clothes but the room was a decent size. Our room had a shady balcony for most of the day but that wasn't a problem for us. Good location for esmerelda beach which was beautiful and town centre which had loads of restaurants and bars.
