“Much better than expected. A great place for a cheap price.”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

This is a very honest review, I've never written one before but felt I should to give this complex the justice it deserves. Me and my boyfriend booked this as a last minute, cheap holiday because we were desperate for a week away. For £350 per person for a week all inclusive, we thought it was a bargain and was assured by my parents that if it was a Riu hotel, it would live up to a certain standard. After reading reviews and looking at the pictures I had mixed feelings, but I needn't have had. When we arrived we saw that the complex was extremely large, probably about 2 miles from one end to the other, and up hill too. We were firstly allocated room 370, which although it was extremely clean (as are all the rooms) which is a good 15/20 minute walk up hill. We asked to be changed but due to the hotel being fully booked (lots and lots of Spanish people come just for the weekend and we arrived on a Saturday, so do not be put off if you arrive at the weekend, the pool and restaurant will seem busy but is much more chilled when they've gone home come Monday) we could not be moved until the following day, to room 92. We then even moved to room 12, right behind the pool the day after that, so we were even closer to everything. We were pretty upset at being so far away when we arrived, but to give the Reception staff their dues, we were given a complimentary bottle of cava and flowers in our room when we finally settled on the Monday. So learn from this and e-mail the hotel, or get the travel agents to do so, and ask for a room 0-100 to save your legs. A lot of people we spoke to had done this, and their wishes were accommodated. The rooms are basic, no kettle or fridge which a few people had issues with, but it didn't bother us at all. We bought in the little on-site shop (which was very reasonably priced selling lilos and magazines, sweets and souveniers etc) a large 5 litre bottle of water that we had in the room for the night time and brushing our teeth, and it was only 2.50E. There is also no AC, but there is a ceiling fan which was sufficient - we never felt hot at night. The rooms were always spotlessly clean and towels were changed every day. There was also lots of drawer space too if you could bother unpacking. The pool was great, on the small side for a complex of this size but we got sunbeds around it every single day, even after waking up late and not getting round there until 10am. The only gripe about sunbeds was that they were a little tightly packed, but this didn't bother us too much, we were in and out of the pool the whole time. A man came and checked the pool everyday, taking samples, but I didn't know what for. It was clean, and there was a kids bit too. The beach was lovely and picturesque, but as other reviews have stated you have to pay for the sunbeds, but they are not expensive at 4.20E for a sunbed and 4E for the parasol. You could easily have a day down there. There was a bit of seaweed, but it was the sea so I don't know how people can complain about that! It was cleaned on a Friday (we think) and there was much less seaweed after that. There is the odd jellyfish, but just watch your step. The food is great for a 3 star hotel, you certainly wouldn't go hungry. There was so much variety we never got bored and had something different every day. At breakfast there was hot food (eggs, bacon and sausages on alternate days, tomatoes etc), toast with all different jams or spreads, pastries, pancakes, churros (which are lush), yoghurts, cereals and fruits. For lunch you could go to the restaurant where they did a full spread just like the dinner service (but they never did the same food at lunch that they did at dinner; or you could go to the snack bar near the beach where they did hot-dogs, burgers, pizza and cheese and ham toasties, with salad and ice creams and fruits. At dinner in the restaurant (which I'd like to add the only dress code was that men wore t-shirts which pleased my boyfriend as he didn't have to wear trousers) you chose a sitting, either 7-730 pm or 8.30-9pm (which is the time you sit down). We chose the later one, and there was no issue with lack of food which you might expect. You were also allocated a table for dinner which you used every night, which was nice as you didn't have to worry about losing your table if you both got up at the same time. (At breakfast and lunch we made sure to leave a full drink on our table or my boyfriend's hat and our table was never taken - it's never that busy in there anyway) There is a great variety of food at dinner, a hot cooking station which had at least two meats and a fish dish and veg and some kind of potatoes as well as pasta with two sauces. There was also a Spanish counter with did specialities like roasted pork etc. There was a massive salad bar which also had things like cod fritters or mussels which we had as a starter with the salad. The deserts were better than most other hotels, there was fruit and ice cream but the cakes (and most nights they had profiteroles) were good. They also had a 'special dessert' counter which was cooking fruit like bananas or peaches in syrup and you could have it with brandy and ice cream. The drinks in there were also good, wine, beer, soft drinks, juices and ice tea all on tap and one night they were serving cava. They also had a tray of a green aperitif which you could have had too. The bars throughout the day are good, but the pool bar doesn't open until 11am, which is a bit of a wait for a drink if you have breakfast early (it opens at 8am). We bought a few bottles of water from vending machines (only 1.50E) and filled them up at breakfast so that we could have a drink before the bar opened. The drink selection though, was brilliant. Fruit juice, water, soft drinks and tea/coffees were all serve you self. The bar offered slush puppies in 4 flavours (strawberry, cola, orange and lemon) which are great when you're hot. Sangria and mojitos were also available as were about 6 cocktails (which were very juicy but none the less tasted great), and wines and any spirit you could think of as well as beer obviously. The pool bar is open until 7pm, and the beach bar (where continental breakfast is served 10.30-12.30, and the burgers and pizzas etc I mentioned are served 12.30-5.30) is open for drinks between 10.30-6pm. At 6 the lobby bar, which is up the steps next to the restaurant, opens for business. The views from there are great and you can have a drink before dinner over looking the beach (quite hard to find a seat outside though, as most people have this idea). The lobby bar is where the evening show is from 10-11pm. Although it was quite cheesy (just miming well known songs etc) the staff put a lot of effort in and after a few cava's (which is available from every bar!!) I found it quite funny. They do loads for kids including a little mini-disco before the show, and throughout the day we noticed a full kids entertainment itinerary. As for the entertainment in the day, the possibilities are endless. The staff are not pushy at all, but we found ourselves getting involved in quite a few activities. Water-polo, aqua-gym, shooting, ping pong just to name a few, but there was loads more you could have done and the staff are lovely and speak about 6 different languages each!! There is also a mini-golf course, ping pong tables and pool tables which you could use for a 5E deposit pp payable to reception for the golf clubs or ping pong bats - pool was 1.50E per go. You could not be bored or hungry at this complex, but if you was you could take a wander into the little town. It's about a 20 minute walk into the town from the beach, over some rocks (which is an unsteady climb but I did it fine in flip-flops) and then over another beach and up through another hotel. The town is just what you expected, with little souvenir shops and restaurants and bars. You couldn't do the walk at night as there is no lights over the rocks but we found out it would only be 10E in a taxi each way, if you fancied a change of scenery.

Going to this hotel we really didn't know what to expect and were pleasantly surprised and would not hesitate in going back there for a cheap week. If all you want is a cheap week in the sun with good food and drinks, this is the perfect place to go. If you are a good walker (because of the size of the complex and the restaurant being up about 40 steps) then you will be fine. The Thomson pictures do not do it justice and it is much nicer in person. Its by no means a luxury complex, but we had a great time and came back with tans and full bellies!

Room Tip: E-mail the hotel ahead and ask for a room 0-100 unless you fancy an up-hill walk.

Visited Riu Tropicana for a quick week away in May this year and it was lovely. The staff are fantastic always smiling and they made our holiday extra special, especially the bar staff. The rooms are cleaned every day with fresh towels and bedding which is always a bonus. Only downside was choice of food was very poor, it was always fish or pasta but the quality was lovely. The hotel does advertise free wifi though and you have to pay for it which is a downside for some. There was always things going off in the day such as volleyball and table tennis and their is a kids club on site which is brilliant. The entertainment at night though not so fantastic. Overall a good holiday though and I would definitely go again.

We have just returned from 1 week away with our grandson and can honestly say it was the poorest hotel and complex we have ever stayed at. The chalet style rooms are in need of an update and we found ourselves a full half mile from the main complex. There is a mini bus but it only hold 9 people and more often than not the staff are taking up seats. The main building is very tired with broken furniture, lighting all over. The dining facilities require 2 sittings at night and the food is very poor. This is definitely, all inclusive at the bottom of the scale. The entertainment staff however, were fantastic and put huge amounts of effort in. They were just let down by a poor infrastructure. The beach advertised in the brochures has the potential to be stunning but it was not maintained and wading through 10 metres of debris to get in the sea was not much fun. Accepting that it is only a 3 sun hotel the companies advertising it need to stop fibbing and tell the truth. Had we known the state of everything then we would have gone elsewhere. We booked through Thompson and the rep (only came a few times) was next to useless and had no knowledge of the area.

Room Tip: As near to the complex as possible. Not good for disabled people.

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Riu Tropicana a pretty, but large Complex which has bungalows some of which can be situated a long way from the main facilities, rooms could do with upgrading but were always kept clean and towels changed daily. As previously stated by other reviewers no hair dryer, tea making facilities, or fridge in the rooms, also you need to take your own beach towels as there are none provided, top tip in the warm weather if you do not wish to get the mini bus and are situated at the top of the complex make sure to take a drink with you from the pool bar. Food at the restaurant and the snack bar was good and the staff were always helpful, although the choice of food was a little repetitive and there could have been a larger choice of main courses for vegetarians, we found it always to be fresh and replenished frequently, Breakfast and Lunch is a choose your own table option, the evening meal is in 2 sittings which you have a choice of times and you keep to the same table number which is allocated when you first enter the restaurant.
The entertainment staff were also very friendly during the day with the option to join in with the daytime entertainment programme, The riu club entertainers were all very good with the children and although we did not use the club in the day we heard very good reviews about it. The children really came to life in the evening whilst being encouraged by the staff to join in even the shy ones as my grandaughter was on the first evening, this rapidly changed by the end of the week with more than one or two of the parents joining in and singing along to the songs, for this we send them a big thank you. Good shows for the adults in the evening also, if you are looking for a peaceful location, good food, and clean facilities then this is the place for you, should you wish to venture into the town you go over the rocks to a walkway although this can be a little tricky with a pushchair, there is a mini train which does not go very frequently but at a cost of a few euros pleased the children for the novelty factor if nothing else.
On the last day of our stay the adjoining beach was being geared up for the summer season with the addition of more sun loungers and a wooded walkway to the steps of the rocks please note this is not for the exclusive use of the hotel and be prepared to walk through a lot of seaweed on the beach on most days to reach the sea, not sure if this was only due to the bad weather which we experienced on a few days. Would return again.

Room Tip: Very much in demand are bungalows situated near to the facilities, send an email to the hotel they w...

Myself, my partner and our 2 year old son have just returned from the Riu Tropicana after a week all inclusive and overall had a brill time.

The grounds are pretty, had a few lovely walks around whilst getting our toddler to sleep in his buggy!! Bungalows are simple but clean, no fridge in the rooms though! If you have children I would suggest emailing the resort first and request a room between 1-100 as the resort is massive and having bungalow number 300 might not be ideal for people with young children or who are less able. I emailed the hotel beforehand and was given bungalow 1 :) perfect!! And we were offered champagne on arrival, even more perfect :)!!!
No towel service, which is unusual and meant we had to buy towels there at €11 each, which was a bit annoying.
All inclusive food was nice enough but somewhat repetitive, we enjoyed the live cooking and could always find something to eat. Some lovely fresh fruit at breakfast. Staff were great in the restaurant tho, couldn't do enough for you. We had nice lunch at the beach bar everyday (burgers, hot dogs, toasties, salad ect). Cocktails were lovely, good selection or alcohol, the bar staff are amazing! Really friendly and had a great laugh with them all. The entertainment was ok, not much going On during the day and night shows were funny - but we have seen better. But they were great with our son, really made an effort with him everyday - got him up dancing!

The pool is basic, nice pool bar though playing a bit of music...but we much preferred the big beautiful beach with the clear water!
If you want to walk into the town it's a 10 mins walk over the rocks and through Hotel America (next hotel along) where you will find shops bars and restaurants, would recommend The Travellers Inn. Or you can get the little train into town but it's €5 each way, we walked every time and that's with one of us carrying a pushchair so it's pretty simple.

Weather was lovely and hot and had a nice relaxing time, would return!!

We got an excellent deal through TUI Germany for an all inclusive stay. Bear in mind that it's 3 stars. It's slightly outdated but perfectly adequate. Nice selection of food, no bugs, long walk to the bungalows but very welcome after a big meal, no towel service at the pool so bring your own. Wifi in lobby for €15 a week.
