“Fab holiday”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

Having just returned from a 7 day stay at the BQ Apolo hotel in Can Pastilla, I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone!!
The rooms were lovely and clean, yes they are smaller but it really doesn't matter, we stayed in room 605 overlooking the sea; in my opinion the best room :-) huge bathroom and arrived to find complimentary toiletries!
Lovely pool terrace which is quiet and peaceful with a welcoming pool.
Breakfast catered for everyone and had a huge variety; the snacks available at the bar are also lovely and served by friendly staff!
The only negative of the holiday for us was the evening meal...on occasions it was fab but we had a few nights where we felt that it wasn't catering for the English, with that said we would still come back to this hotel tomorrow given the chance!
Set in the lovely location of can pastilla and near to amenities!
An absolutely fab holiday, we look forward to returning next year.

We stayed at BQ Apolo for 10 nights in July 2014. The reception was friendly, the staff at the breakfast were busy catering to tens and tens of guests, so don't expect many courtesies or welcoming smiles. The rooms are quite ok although the small fridge in our room was way too small. We stayed at room 508 with a balcony overlooking the sea and the big hotel in the opposite side. The cleaning service was good, the beds relatively comfortable but small ... as were the rooms themselves. We struggled with the space, the furniture and our two suitcases. For such small rooms less clutter would make a difference. The balcony was a nice feature just for enjoying the sun and the sunsets. We like watching airplanes so we witnessed tens and tens of landings and a few take offs so that was an added bonus for us. The noise from the airplanes is there but is not so bad. One detail that we did not like about our room was the toilletries offered. They were all cheap, drying detergent-like washes made in China. Spain is famous for their soaps and fragrances so I cannot imagine how cheap the owners of this hotel must be to offer to their guests those awful toilletries. Our suggestion is to bring your own washes; we used the toilletries only to wash our legs to scrub the sun block off from our skin. One final remark about the bathrooms in our room: the design has been not that clever and the result is that it is very difficult to take a shower and not have a pool of water on the floor of the anyway small bathroom. We tried various ways of showering and the side effect of a water pool on the floor seemed unavoidable. Trust us it sounds like stupid but when you deal with this every day you start to hate it.
The breakfast takes place in the basement with a small patio outside. I wish the patio was larger and better used. The three buffets guaranteed variety but in our 11 days stay there, the variety was an illusion as the food offered was the same almost every morning, totally repetitive with very small variations (melon instead of water mellon, or bananas instead of peaches, etc.). The three buffets, we think, were for English, German and Spanish breakfast. So one could get their beans-eggs-bacon, and someone else their muesli, cheese and ham sandwich, and finally one could get their pastries and fruits. No it wasn't bad as a selection but I promise you that for 11 mornings in a row it was rather tiring because one tends to stick to what they like and select carefully, so at the end we ate the same few things every morning. For alcohol lovers, there was cava every morning! We had an incident with the breakfast staff mocking us (gay couple in our mid 40s) one morning because I touched the elbow of my partner and the receptionist didn't even apologize to us when we reported it. This is Spain after all (legalized same-sex marriage since mid 2000), but still this hotel is very much family oriented and we would certainly not include it in the category of gay friendly. We guess that this will not affect most of you but anyway.

We didn't once use the pool since we prefer the sea. There are two main options for sea lovers. On the right hand side of the hotel just before the limestone quarry park there is a rocky small beach that we preferred because the sea looked clearer although this side suffered from constant winds (from pleasant breeze to strong winds). Caution is needed with your belongings at any time AND at the beach! We witnessed a robbery in frond of our eyes with little respond from Spaniards sunbathing and no police involvement since the tourists-victims had only been robbed of a backpack with snacks and a dress. On the left of the hotel you will find the tourist strip (we found it rather ugly) with the crowded sandy beach.

We don’t drive. The bus ride to Palma de Mallorca, which is the place to be instead of the ugly tourist trap of Can Pastilla, takes 35-55 minutes depending on the time of the day and the day of the week. You can take both 15 and 31 buses to town and on your way back. 15 is better but in any case in late evenings and night time the ride might take as long as one hour. It happened to us twice in 10 nights and we were quite unhappy but with a crowded bus one shouldn't expect much less than that. Our suggestion is this: there are some ok restaurants to eat in Can Pastilla, but overall this resort is quite horrible to be at. This is why we recommend daily trips to Palma de Mallorca to get advantage of the beauty and variety of options it offers. We alternatively may hire a bike from the hotel or the bike rentals and cycle to Palma. We didn’t do that because we were told that the ride could take easily 50 minutes in the hot sun.

The entertainment during some evenings was hardly enjoyable; few guests attended, the music was at times pretty bad to listen to, probably because this hotel doesn't pay well enough to get good musicians. We remember one evening in particular that we could not stand the music (it was that bad) coming from the terrace on the ground floor below our balcony, so we just left out room to wonder in Can Pastilla. The free WiFi service at the lobby is ok, if you don't need to be connected in your room. But be aware that when you see many guests connected the chances are that you may not be able to connect. The connection gets weak and then impossible until some guests leave.
We paid 1300€ for two persons for 10 nights and all and all BQ Apolo doesn't deserve 4 but 3 stars as it is ok but just that. We would not come back especially because of Can Pastilla and the at times long commutes to Palma.

Room Tip: High up and with sea view.

We chose this hotel because of its location and we have stayed with the BQ brand before. I must say do not take any notice of the poor past reviews as it really is a very beautiful hotel. We stayed for 5 nights.

Room

We opted for a sea view room and were not disappointed. We arrived early, asked for a high floor and had to wait till early afternoon to check in but wow what a room on the 6th floor, well worth the wait. It had a walk in shower, lovely balcony with amazing views. It had a fridge and hairdryer. No kettle so you need to take your own.

The breakfast we found to be really nice. A good selection of cerials, bread, ham, cheese and some hot food too.

Out and About

Having been to Majorca several times before, we went to Puerto de Soller for a day out on the bus from Palma. You can go to so may places from the main bus station. Very cheap buses. We also went into Palma city at night by bus regular bus service, €1.50 each, takes 30 mins. A must for a first time visitor. Go to the old town. Traditional bars and restaurants.

The Resort

Can Pastilla is a predominantly German and Spanish resort. No egg and chip places which made a nice change from places like Palma Nova and Magaluf. All the German and Spanish people we met were really nice and friendly so don't be put off staying here.

Airport

Don't make the mistake of getting a rip off taxi from the airport where they charge you double the meter price €15.95 set fee. We got the bus back as it seemed everybody else did €3 each. 2 stops from this hotel. A 5 min walk to the bus stop.

Food and Drink

Well you are pretty spoilt for choice, lots of fish restaurants and spanish food.

This is also one of the cheapest if not the cheapest resort on Majorca. Food and drink very good value.

Beach

There are 2 beaches a small one near the hotel and long stretch of almost white sandy beach in the main resort. Plenty of room for everyone.

Location

Due to it's close proximity to the airport you do get some aircraft noise. We just took a pair of earplugs each and enjoyed some evenings on the balcony watching the take offs and landings. If you're a plane spotter this place would be ideal.

We wouldn't hesitate staying anywhere else but the BQ Apolo and thanks to all the great staff that work there for making our stay so enjoyable.

I booked this hotel as a late booking and judging by the reviews beforehand was hoping for a good stay, well i got more than that, from the first greeting by a very helpful and friendly receptionist, the bar staff to the cleaners and all staff at breakfast it was superb, a very well run hotel and very clean all around the building, our room was cleaned to an excellent standard every day of our 5 night (wished it could have been longer) stay. The air con worked a treat, the little accessories i.e shampoo etc put out for the stay were excellent. Breakfast was superb with absolutely loads of choice for all nationalities, couldn't fault it. The drinks in the bar were very reasonably priced and of good standard. we loved the pool and the loungers were excellent quality. Our room had as requested a balcony with a stunning sea view couldn't of asked for better! All in all great hotel, fairly priced, clean and efficient will definately return with pleasure, thanks to all at the APOLO.

Room Tip: just choose a sea view room, view the ships in the bay and the aircraft taking off and landing it co...

Stayed here first week of July. Booked a double seaview room on a high floor. Actual room features - twin beds, limited storage (12 hangers, 1 drawer, no shelves), extra duvets and pillows, full shower. We had room 608 with amazing views of the bay and over towards Palma. Yes, Can Pastilla is very close to the airport runway and you can hear the planes throughout the day, but we heard nothing during the night and it was quite something to see them come in to land. And the plus side is it's only 3 euros each on the airport bus which stops at the top of the road. Restaurant - very flexible dining times but the food is catered towards the Europeans (ie the non-Brits). It is repetitive but there is something to suit most palettes and the staff are very efficient and friendly. The pool is clean and a good size and the pool area is pleasant with good quality loungers. Snacks are available between midday and 4pm on the terrace tables. We took the coastal walk to Palma which is a good 5 miles and stopped at some great bars along the way. Well worth the effort and if you're not up to walking you could always rent a bike, some skates or a segway. Overall a good quality, good value, clean, four star hotel on the edge of Can Pastilla.

Room Tip: Suggest 608 but beware the balcony rail is quite low.

This typical 1960's style hotel block has recently been renovated to a good standard. The reception area is attractive and modern and the Lounge and bar areas function well. The hotel seems disabled person friendly with ramps and lifts. The bedrooms albeit small by modern day standards are very clean and nicely decorated. The shower room serves its purpose and there are complimentary amenities and toiletries. We had a Palma facing room on the top floor, which offered lovely views and could be a plane spotters delight as a regular stream of departing aircraft offered something extra to watch! The breakfast room is downstairs but is light and airy with a good selection to tempt the morning palate. The pool area is very clean (there is an indoor pool as well which we didn't use). Massages are on offer, but for the bashful, maybe screening from public view would attract more clients? Close to restaurants, bars and a very safe sandy beach and bay area. Would we stay again? Definitely!

Room Tip: Palma views get the sun late afternoon!
