“overall - not the dream stay expected”
Reviewed 1 December 2013

Having just come from a perfect stay at an Agro-tourism Finca with charming hosts, spotless accommodation and attention to detail, our much-awaited and long-planned stay at Ca'n Reus in October was a real disappointment. We had not booked on the basis of the fame or personalities of the owners, purely on the desire to stay somewhere exquisite in this lovely village - and with real regret, Ca'n Reus fell short of expectation given the price charged.
I have communicated with the niche booking website used about the short-comings that were not dependant on the owner's being there . Above all the outside areas need to be cleansed of cats that lie on the sun-loungers, the soft furnishings on the terrace - and much of the outside furniture needs replacing urgently, The sitting area by the pool was rather unkempt .
We had booked the Suite - the view from the Suite and the 2 upstairs rooms are stunning; but the furniture in the Suite was more junk shop than chic. We had to heave suitcases up and down the steep stairs as no help was offered by the staff.
Overall, if you are checking reviews with a view to booking, be aware that the rooms on the street side will have no view - but that is the nature of the narrow streets in the village and is clearly detailed on the Hotel website, and that the Garden room and room under the kitchen will come with some lack of privacy and noise. The top floor rooms and the Suite offer stunning views - but be prepared to lug some suitcases ; not for the less mobile !
Hopefully some attention and expenditure on the outside furnishings and to the Suite ( really needs some TLC and investment) will happen over winter ..

There's no better hiking than this mountainous section of Mallorca. Hikes range from the truly epic to manageable by most fit walkers. Regardless, the views are without doubt world class. And this little one of a kind hotel is the perfect place to rest up afterwards. The owners will point you in the right direction depending on your desired level of effort (if you are lucky Sue will join you on your walk). The hotel and village are romantic and camera worthy in the extreme - save some time to walk around the village. The hotel is 'old style' and it can be a trek carrying your bags up three flights, but it's worth it. We loved it.

Room Tip: Ask to face the mountain/gardens

Fornalutx is a very beautiful village with stunning views. Ca'n Reus was our first stop on a walking holiday in Northern Majorca and it ticked all the boxes. Individual, quirky, small and oozing TLC. Our room was on the top floor (plenty of muscle needed to heft the cases up there) and overlooked the narrow street below. It was absolutely charming. The bathroom was Ok but the shower head had a mind of its own. It kept leaping off its mounting every time the water pressure changed. The room was very clean and nicely furnished, bedding towels etc were of good quality. Wifi reception was excellent.

Breakfast was out of this world and the girls in the kitchen are to be congratulated on producing such a superb display of food each morning. Not only did the food look good, it tasted good. An incredible selection of freshly prepared fruits, fresh OJ, meats, cheeses, breads - Nectar! We stayed in four different hotels on this trip and this was way and above the best breakfast provided. No low quality industrial catering pack food here. It was so refreshing to find somewhere that had gone to so much effort. Trying local foods and wine is one of our holiday pleasures and we are so often disappointed with being presented with poor quality food.
We did not meet the owners Sue and Nick who were away. We arrived during the fiesta and other guests passed on the warnings they had been given about bad behaviour and personal safety. However, we did not witness anything like that. Maybe it all went on after we were safely tucked up in bed. From our viewpoint the fiesta looked to be very much a family
occasion. The only inconvenience for us being that the bars and restaurants closed very early on the Saturday evening.
We loved our stay at Ca'n Reus and would love to return some day.

Have to agree with a recent review on Nick's lecture on the horrors of the fiesta. I understand he has to be careful but it was very alarming to be told tales of vomit running down the streets, cars having to be moved so they would be damaged (not very reassuring if you have hired one) and drunken young men trying to break in, so to put any valuables in the safe. Maybe the Guardia Civil were exaggerating but we visitors had to take what Nick said at face value. Nothing actually happened as far as all the guests could tell but Nick of course had left (for work) though he gave the impression he wouldn't have stayed anyway, leaving his young staff to look after security. No BBQ that week because of the fiesta - also could have been told this in advance. It would be helpful NOT to alarm your guests quite so much and to have been told at the time of booking that fiesta week is a little different to a normal week in this beautiful and quiet village. Otherwise a lovely stay with very helpful young women keeping it all going. We loved the pool and breakfasts.

Have stayed in this delightful hotel on a number of occasions and each time it just gets better. The rooms all have their own character and if you want one with a view, it is worth paying the extra to wake up and see the morning sun shining across the valley on the stunning mountains. The hosts, Sue and Nick are charming and very helpful, without being too obtrusive. Sue in particular likes walking and is happy to suggest walks suitable to your ability.

The breakfasts are a tasty mix of Majorcan and continental food and with as much as you want to eat, there really is no need for lunch. The views from the terrace as you sit down to your fresh orange juice and fruit are fabulous. Nick’s weekly BBQ is a must – well done Nick! And with their charming team of girls who have been there from the start to help make the place run smoothly , this is surely an accolade to Sue and Nick.

To add to the hotels excellent location, Fornalutx is in one of the most beautiful villages in Majorca with some lovely buildings and side streets. It never seems to get too crowded. The village also has several very good restaurants with excellent quality of food. Soller and Porto Soller, only a 15 minute drive away, are both interesting and delightful.

In summing up this hotel, I would say it is ideal for anyone who appreciates the character and warmth of small hotels with charm and quality. The perfect place to chill out and relax.

Keep up the good work Sue and Nick.

A lovely village in a stunning position. The hotel, however, in spite of a lovely breakfast and a very comfortable bedroom, l'ofre, with a spectacular view to the mountains, left a bit to be desired. The garden furniture was falling to pieces, wheels collapsed if you tried to move the sunbeds. The mattresses were filthy and umbrellas broken. Rubbish, broken chairs, furniture etc., was on view. The owner, Nick, appeared occasionally, but we got the impression he didn't like the general public!! We were all lectured one morning at breakfast as to how to protect his property for the night of the village fiesta. Warned about the riotous behaviour of the youngsters, as he announced his departure to London!! The girls who had to run the place in his absence were lovely, friendly and efficient. It would be so easy to make this place excellent.

Room Tip: Got to be a room with a view of the mountains. Top floor the best.

Hello

We are sorry that your stay with us was unsatisfactory.

In light of your review we have freshly laundered all the garden furniture coverings. We also inspected all garden furniture and fittings for damage. A wheel was found to be broken and was immediately repaired.

We were unable to find any other damage to the furniture however, and we would be grateful if you could email us at info@canreushotel.com with more information.

The umbrellas seem to be working fine. They are articulated umbrellas, which mean they are supposed to rest at an angle to make it easy to change the direction that gets shade. This does give them a 'drunken' appearance at times.

We are sorry that Nick rubbed you the wrong way. The Guarda Civil visited our house that morning and warned him about potential trouble connected to the festivities. We have a duty of care to keep all our guests (and our business) safe from harm.

Thank you for reading.

The location, the traditional building and the attentive but relaxed local staff tell make this hotel. We did not meet the English owners, but judging by some of the other reviews on here we did not miss much. If you have young children we would advise against visiting - ours are 6 & 11 and the pool was smaller than we imagined and all the seating and sun beds in the garden area were very close, which probably explains the 'no jumping in' rule. The English neighbour was also less than pleasant about our children having fun in the pool - there seems to be some history here! We would also NOT recommend the self catering accommodation next to the hotel - this is actually the hotel owners' house although this was less than clear in the description. The lack of air con / too much clutter / cleaning & upkeep issues / 4 floors of accommodation etc made this very difficult with a young family. That aside: the hotel rooms are air conditioned & extremely clean, breakfast was lovely & varied, the views are breathtaking, the village gorgeous and the staff are charming.
