I'd only generally heard horror stories about the threat of trouble at the hotel and its surroundings, but I can honestly say that as far as our four-night trip in May 2014 went, there was no reason to be concerned.
If you're expecting a family friendly resort, forget it, but if you want a hotel that's ideally suited to younger groups with a willingness to enjoy themselves (but not to excess or stupidity), this is an ideal choice.
The rooms were well maintained with everything seeming clean and functional. The ceiling fans were excellent and kept the rooms nice and cool. They were virtually silent too, so you could keep them on at night without being disturbed, meaning that the only disruption to a good night's sleep was the occasional drunk screaming down the corridor - which was the least we expected in Magaluf in all honesty.
The pool is a great vibrant location and seems to have been newly refurbished quite recently. We went out of season so we didn't get to see any live acts, but the mix of music played at poolside throughout the day (from about 11am to 11pm) was great; a decent mix of indie and chilled dance.
The hotel staff were pleasant and efficient, although it's fair to assume that you may have to wait a while to check in if you arrive on an airport bus because several dozen people all arriving at once in waves throughout the day do tend to swamp the available staff.
If I have to look for negatives, I'd probably be a bit wary of some of the corridors being very dark at all times of the day - good for keeping them cool, but slightly un-nerving with the lack of light - and the lifts could be pretty temperamental, but that was about it as far as the hotel went. There were reports of cleaners and/or security staff stealing money from rooms while we were there, but I didn't actually meet anyone who could verify this, and I presume it may just have been a rumour started by people who believe the negative reviews they read before they set off.
At all times of day and night, the short section of road between the hotel and the rest of the resort is regularly frequented by the 'lucky lucky men' (and they're joined at night by prostitutes from a brothel that discretely operates from the block opposite), but unless you're passing at the absolute dead of night (which hardly exists due to the constant activity), there will always be plenty of people about, so as long as you're wary, they shouldn't (hopefully) pose a problem.
