Just got back from a two week stay, that was our fourth time there. It is the most loveliest hotel ever, its great to meet up with people year after year and always the same staff who are smashing. Everything about it is fantastic. All booked for next year, cant wait

Room Tip: All rooms are sea view

We stayed at the Son Matias 8th July to 15th July 2014. We had read lots of the reviews and it is clear that there’s something about this hotel that makes people want to keep returning. I hope this review will help others who have not been before.

We arrived at 11:30 and welcomed by the man at the reception, he said our room was not ready (official check-in is 14:00) and that we should come back in about an hour so we took our cases to the store room, took out the swimwear etc that we needed, changed in the toilets and returned to reception to get some towels (12 Euro deposit per towel plus 1 Euro charge each time you wanted one replaced). We were informed that our room was now ready (11:45), so we collected our cases and went to our room on the 9th floor – wow, what a view! All the receptionists we spoke to during our stay were very helpful and polite, however we never needed to complain about anything which is always the crucial test.

Wifi is free, you need to ask at reception for a username and password for each of your devices. The signal is strong throughout the hotel but the speed is very low most of the time.

The room was a reasonable size, not big, and thanks to the re-furbishment all the furniture and fittings were in near pristine condition. There were not enough drawers or shelves and the hanging space was not high enough for even knee length dresses let alone full length dresses that many ladies wore in the evening. The TV was a bit small and the sound quality was very poor but there was a good selection of English channels. You could only just get an iPad in the safe so putting other items in as well was awkward, it cost 20 Euros to hire the safe for a week plus 6 Euros deposit for the key (the key had the room number on it so if you lost the key the contents of the safe could be at risk). The free to use fridge was supplied empty apart from a litre of UHT milk which lasted us the week and two bottles of water. Tea, coffee and sugar were supplied with the kettle and mugs. Cleaning of our room was acceptable but far from perfect, toiletries were replenished as necessary. The cleaning standard of the hotel in general was very good.

The pool area was “compact”, there were around 130 sunbeds and 8 of the giant circular beds. By 7:45 each morning the queue for the pool area started to form and by 9:00, when the doors were opened, 50 to 60 people would swarm in and bag their favourite places. We turned up every day a couple of minutes before 9:00 and always got a place we were happy with. By 11:00 there were usually still 10-20 sunbeds still available though some were in the shade for much of the day so would not suit sun-worshippers. The pool bar offered a reasonable selection of hot and cold snacks and drinks – all reasonably priced. Most days the pool bar was run by the delightful young lady Jero, she produced the food to order (for the main bar as well as the pool bar) with very little help. At the busy time around 1:30 she expertly managed her time between the food preparation and the serving without getting flustered and always had a smile for her customers.

Food – the restaurant provided a good choice of well prepared food ever day both breakfast and dinner. Waiters attentive at dinner time but less so at breakfast when dirty plates would sometimes not be cleared from our table for quite some time.

Drinks were reasonably priced for a 4 star hotel – local beer 2 Euro half pint, 3 Euro for pint of shandy, Gin & Tonic 4.30, Baileys 4.30. House wine in the restaurant was on special offer all week at 8.10 Euro a bottle.

This is the first hotel we have experienced that operates a “can’t leave your sunbed empty too long” system. On the hour (most hours) during the day, if your sunbed is not occupied, a sticker is put on it with the time, if an hour later the sticker is still there then the towels are removed. Most people would like to see a system that stops people reserving sunbeds first thing in the morning and not using them until several hours later but this system seemed to be a bit over zealous which led to a few disgruntled guests.

The entertainments team of Kelly and Jess did an excellent job both during the day and the evening with games and quizzes and introducing the evening entertainment. Unfortunately, due to the restricted space around the pool, the games had to take place indoors which I felt detracted from people joining spontaneously once they saw others taking part, which I have often seen at other hotels.

The evening entertainment acts varied for ok to brilliant, during our week there were –

A male singer (forgotten his name) – ok but went overboard with trying to get audience participation.
Neil Diamond tribute – ok/good.
Il Duo - two Spanish male singers providing a good selection of classical and current songs – very good (if only they didn’t play so much with their microphone stands).
Claudia – singer – ok.
George (Claudia’s partner) – singer/comedian – BRILLIANT !!!!!
The Four Tops tribute act – same night as the World Cup Final so we can’t comment.
Paul Martin – singer – ok.

Why do so many people keep coming back to this hotel? I think because all the staff work as a team to provide a happy atmosphere in good surrounding with good food, good service, good entertainment.

The major fly in the ointment for us was the location of the hotel – Palmanova appears to be merging with Magaluf (and the hotel is the Magaluf side of Palmanova) with rowdy elements singing and shouting on the beach and promenade throughout the night with no chance of light sleepers getting a decent night’s sleep. There’s very little to do outside the hotel unless you want what’s in Magaluf or enjoy looking at the dozens of tacky souvenir and cheap clothing shops. However Palma is a 3.20 Euro bus ride away with the bus stop right outside the hotel, (a folder at reception has the bus times). The Soller train is also a good day out.

As mentioned in other reviews, the age of guests is very heavily weighted towards the 50+, we would have preferred a more level age spread despite being (young) 64 year olds ourselves.

Star employees – Jero in the Pool Bar, closely followed by Kelly and Jess.

The hotel is great but we won’t be returning – ONLY because it’s in Palmanova!

Room Tip: Fantastic view from the high floors

I normally write a full and honest review so I'm not going to change my ways now! Where do I start? Probably the same place I end.
I cannot fault this hotel, it's an adults only and the age range is probably from 35-40 upwards, not a problem, you find that when the clientele is mature there is more respect for other guests and surroundings. The hotel is bright, clean, spacious and well maintained. The staff are faultless, the food is fantastic, something for everyone, it is well cooked, presented and always hot. The deserts are too die for strawberries dipped in hot chocolate my fav! The rooms are cleaned everyday towels changed every day. Pool towel hire full return of deposit and only €1 per towel to change. The rooms have tea &coffee provided (enough for your stay, but not replenished) fridge TV are free or charge, you also get a carton of milk and bottle of water.
The only downside is the cost of a holiday at this hotel and to be fair that's down to thomson not the hotel. Would we go back? Without a shadow of a doubt (have to save up though!) would we recommend it most definitely

Room Tip: High floor 7 upwards are quietest and a fab view

This was our first visit to the Son Matias and on arrival we were really pleased with the hotel and location. The staff are excellent, rooms are clean and we could not fault the food as I believe there is something to suit everyone. However the situation with regards to the pool needs to change. My partner and I are early risers and would go for breakfast at 7.30ish, we could not believe that people were queuing to get their favourite spot when the gate to the pool did not open until 9.00am (way too late in my opinion). On the one day we did get a good spot in the sun we witnessed people placing their towels and then going for breakfast or walks, on some occasions placing towels for friends also. This resulted in us having to pay 13.5 euros a day for beds on the beach when we are not really beach lovers. I understand that some guests have been holidaying at this hotel for years, and a new system may upset them, but if new guests aren't happy with little things then they won't return, and new guests opinions should count if Son Matias wants them to be future returning guests. I think that if people have been for breakfast early they should be given a pass to enter the pool and not have to waste an hour or so of their holiday a day queuing (your room card gets swiped each time you go for a meal). For this reason only, I would not return to this hotel unless the pool policy changed.

The Hotel Son Matias is a wonderful Hotel. My husband and I stayed for 2 weeks in May and we both had a very enjoyable stay. The Hotel is very clean and the Rooms are bright with attractive furniture, comfortable beds and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a large balcony with a table and comfortable chairs and every room has a beautiful sea view. The Entertainment at night is very good with something to suit all tastes.Outside there is a good sized Pool, a Jacuzzi and comfortable sun loungers. The food is excellent in both quality and variety and the staff are very efficient and helpful. The Thompson Rep was especially helpful. The Son Matias is superbly situated with the Promenade right outside, which was ideal for me as I have mobility problems. We can wholeheartedly recommend this lovely Hotel and we have already booked again for next year!
