“Good, but not at end of season”
Reviewed 24 October 2013

I can only agree with some of the previous comments, We arrived just as Block B, and the Flower Power Restaurant closed for the winter. Then, half way through the week they closed Block C and the Surf Restaurant. So, suddenly we were one of the few Brits in a sea of German families, some of who were, as reported, insufferably rude.
The rooms were very well kept and the grounds were in good condition too. We were in Block A (first floor) . The weather was exceptionally good for the time of year.
The food was of reasonable quality, but very repetitive and oriented to the Germans. As compensation for the loss of the other two restaurants they mad the The 50's style American diner free, but we weren't impressed either.

If you eat at t restaurant, and sit outside, then look out for the feral cats!

The staff were nice, and did respond when required, i.e. when the room was uncleaned at 15.30 etc.

All in all, we would recommend for families more than couples. Don't miss the Caves of Drach, just go early.

Room Tip: Rooms in Block A are quieter on the Front of the Resort, as otherwise they overlook the main pool an...

We have just walked in though the door and I just had to get on here and write a review. Couldn't recommend this hotel highly enough. We went with 4 boys varying in age 16, 13, 3 & 1 and everything was covered. We went at the end of the season and it was all pretty quiet with plenty of sunbeds and food to go round. There were 100 English to 500 Germans but everyone was friendly and polite. The staff couldnt do enough for us, the entertainment crew were hysterical and the restaurant staff deserve a huge mention as they were so friendly and kind. The food is very good and there is a huge choice (all labelled when we were there). We have stayed at all inclusive and half board resorts before and this surpassed any that we have been to. You could eat yourself into a food coma if you so wished. Ice creams were available all day too as was coffee, tea and cold drinks. I liked the coffee in the Nescafé machine previous reviewer, agreed on the nestle one tho, haha. Football was good for the older kids and me, as was archery and darts. The Sprite pad and water park were fun for the little ones. The accommodation we stayed in at block b was dated but quiet, spacious and clean. (I think they are due to update this in 2014). I think we went at a good time because it was relatively empty I imagine it gets super busy in the peak season. Would definitely go back again and will be telling friends and family about it too.

The Cala Mandia resort is the perfect location for families with children (and adults) who want a busy holiday but with the opportunity to relax too. The teen club, run by the hotel, was the ideal opportunity for our kids to mix in with kids of other nationalities to play football, table tennis, shoot, play darts, etc.. there were activities morning and late afternoon (3pm til sometimes after 6 once the Dads joined in the football!!) and the Sport and Daily program for the grown ups incorporated all sorts for fitness freaks to pool lovers - and believe me, if you saw the selection of desserts you would understand why I did Zumba, aerobics and legs, bums and tums on my "relaxing" holiday!!! There is even a spa which is located one floor up from the pool and they offer fantastic massages - very worthwhile..as well as manicuers, pedicures etc
The hotel is clean and I mean everywhere.. - other than one day when the ladies toilets had obviously been visited by some young unaccompanied swimmers - the hotel was immaculate. The food is buffet style for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the choice is great. Salad selection to die for, big choice of cooked meats and fresh fish every day and fruits and desserts to make the mouth water. The only thing I had a complaint about was the coffee as the machine (despite being Nescafe) did not make good coffee - please treat yourselves to some new filter machines this winter and have jugs refilling the whole time and your resort will be perfect!
The evening entertainment is provided by the hotel team who have been busy all day doing mini maxi and teen clubs as well as the grown up programmes too. They then don costumes and sing, dance, tell jokes, force you to do congas ( hey we loved it) and basically worked their socks off for 12hours PLUS per day - they were always smiling, always had time to talk to you and were so fantastic with our kids they were crying when we left - that's the staff and the kids ;-)
We had our rooms in A block and I personally think that I would want there again. If you have younger children - from 0 to 8 - you would be better to be in C block as the Insi club is based there and the splash pool is there too, but ask for B block if you are without children or want a nice quiet room at night. We were lucky as our rooms overlooked the side road - no view really but quiet all night and cooler too.
What can I say other than Thank You First Choice for putting together a fabulous Leisure resort all inclusive holiday that pleased us and our 15(he had his birthday there and the entertainers sang to him) 13 and 12 year old children and that is not an easy thing to do! WE WILL BE BACK!!

Room Tip: A block rooms would probably be noisy in the height of the summer unless you have a room at the fron...

The accommodation was spacious, modern and clean. The resort was clean and very family orientated - lots of paddling pools for toddlers and a couple of parks. The food was lovely, but not labelled very clearly. The gym wasn't as fancy as the resort deserves - unattended, not air conditioned and some broken equipment.

Bikes are free to hire (with baby seat if required), and Porto Cristo is 3miles away, pretty much all in 'sectioned off' bike lanes. There is also an hourly land train leading to a lovely beach. It is quite tight for space with no pushchair space (unless it folds up quite small), and costs extra - but a nice day out. It is possible to order a packed lunch from the resort for free

Went here for a break with my daughter and 2 and three quarters year old grandson in June . This hotel was par excellence in every way possible. and an ideal place for children. The only fault was that my grandson could not go to children's club because the age range was babies to 3 years and because there mostly babies in that had to be looked after and carried There was nothing for him to join for fun. he was totally bore on the two half hours that he tried. This age range is too big a gap for children who want to run around and join in the singing and dancing that the older children were participating in.
Only fault there are no lifts in blocks and children in pushchairs like us have to be carried up stairs

Room Tip: Block C and B are the best areas to go

We arrived home from one weeks holiday on Saturday 19th October 2013 just the two of us and no children and we were All Inclusive. The weather was exceptional. The hotel is very clean. We were allocated a one bedroom apartment with a lounge and kitchenette, the balcony was off the lounge facing the road and shops and at the very end of the row, it was very quiet which suited us. Some people complained about suite cases moving back and forth in the night, but we did not get that because we were at the end of the row. There was a television in the lounge and in the bedroom and you could watch all the UK programs which was brilliant, also my husband could watch the early morning motor racing in the lounge without disturbing my sleep. However I was informed we would have a bath robe and slippers but we were told these were not part of our package, however the Thomson rep Diane arranged to have some put in our room so that was corrected quite quickly. There was no complimentary bottle of Water in the fridge and again Diane the Rep got a bottle put in our room. Although we had an Apartment with a kitchen there was no kettle, tea or coffee. We had to pay 20 Euro deposit for a kettle and we collected tea and coffee from the bar area daily.

We were happy with the food, there was plenty of fresh fruit every day.

At Breakfast you could have a glass of champagne if you wished which was nice. all area of the dinning room were very clean and modern. Don't get the wine from the dispenser in the dinning room its much nicer from the bar which comes from a bottle. The bars have all named alcohol which is very impressive.

This hotel caters mainly for families and the facilities are very good for children, so if you don't like children it may not be for you.

The staff are very friendly and attentive

We had a fantastic holiday

Here are the highlights;
The Adult pool and Bar area which gave us space away from the families when we wanted quiet time.
Separate bedroom and dining room in the apartment
Televisions with UK channels

Clean and well kept areas throughout the hotel
Hotel is on a main bus route and also has a little train that will take you into Porta Cristo
We got the 9.35 am bus from out side the hotel to The Caves of Drac which is only a few minutes ride away and arrive at the caves at 9.45 am, Therefore we were first in the queue and on the first tour of the caves at 10.00 am, which was brilliant, again Diane the Rep advised us to do this, and we missed all the tour buses and coaches that arrived later and massive queues.

The issues we had are:

No bath robe and slippers in our room
No tea/coffee making facilities

For one pool towel you will need to pay 20 Euro deposits and for 2 towels 40 Euro and they are a bit worn. ( We bought two brand new ones from a shop opposite for 6 euros each
For a kettle its another 20 Euro Deposit
for use of a Bike it is another 20 Euro deposit per bike
You do get the deposits back when you check out and return the items, but then you are stuck with lots of Euro's when you are about to depart, this is probably only an issue for the British.
I think that a 5 Euro deposit would be enough.

At the adult bar I wanted a glass of Soda with lime juice and was told that lime juice was for the cocktails only and therefore I couldn't have the lime juice.

All of the above are only little things that could easily be corrected by the hotel at very little cost

Car Hire;

Be careful as there is a Sun Car Representative in the foyer of this hotel and we hired a Fiesta Diesel car for a day, when we went to collect it, they did not have one available so they offered us a Citroen C3 which had a lot of dents and scratches and bald tyres, we refused it and then we were offered a Ford Focus petrol, we were not happy, but they did give us a discount on the fuel, but I would not recommend this company to you.

Room Tip: choose Block A

I'm sure that this should be a great hotel. We visited in early October though, travelling independently and taking advantage of the discounts on offer for booking direct with the hotel for late season. All the UK package holdays to resort had more or less finished for the season, so I would estimate that it was at least 75% German occupied, which is fine - excepting that some of them really are insufferably rude (as we know they're only good at short-term winning). The rooms were very well kept and the grounds were in good condition too. We were in Block C (ground floor) which is great for kids as it's near all the activities. The weather was exceptionally good for the time of year. Food - the food was of reasonable quality, but in my opinion very repetitive - so at the end of our 11 days I was sort of walking around the buffet in a daze wondering what on earth to eat. I believe that the food was very oriented to our German cousins, and I really didn't see one spicy dish in the whole time we were there. The Surf bar is a good alternative in the evening, but it was only open on some evenings whilst we were there. The 50's style American diner was the worst experience of all - simply a chicken breast from the buffet stuck in a bun with some salad - the service was dire and we had to pay extra for the privelidge! Kids - The Insotel kids club was available to us, and mostly open but was largely deserted whilst we were there. Our daughter was eligible for the baby club, which we put her in one day. However, it was small, she was the only child present and she became bored after one hour. WE had the impression that things were gettting very end of season, with some facilities not beingb opened all the time, staff numbers reducing, selection at meal times (particularly at the Surf Bar) becoming more limited.
