We stayed at the Pladja d Or from the 7/07/12 to the 14/07/12.We had a lovely time, the standards were high and the food was good, especially when you consider the cost of staying at this hotel, its staff are very friendly, and it was generally very social.Only downside was some of the guests anti social and selfish behaviour, the worst example of this was idiots coming down at 7.00 in the morning and plonking their towel down on a sunbed, and then not actually using it until midday, and then for half an hour before lunch!!If people had not behaved in this stupid fashion then there would have plenty of sunbeds for everyone! As it was there were lots of empty sunbeds with towels on for most of the day!Lovely beach within 2 mins. walk, easy access. The beds are very comfortable and firm, and not the usual soft unsupportive type found in lots of UK hotels. There were the usual moans from those who had been on the cruise, they would complain about anything and everything,I feel they had spent too much time at the captains table, and had lost all sense of reality!!!Generally an extremely friendly hotel ,this was our 5th visit and it really made a nice break from the rain etc.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.

this hotel is on the Thomson site as 4 T which iT most definately is not , the basic rooms are a little tired but kept clean, the TV is an antique and will never survive any digital switchover two channels ! we had a army of ants and were told by reception it was time of the year , they did fumigate the room but the little insects returned and as we only had one night left we just stuck it out , EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE ON THE MARCH OVER THE BED . The food is very basic and the staff start clearing away the food 30-40 mins before the restaurant closes which is bizzare , we ate out three nights on an 7 night stay, the new entertainment team try the hardest , but we were very unimpressed with the whole experience , which was made worse by the price we paid , beds were also hard
the sunbeds queue starts at 8am in the lounge area , I counted thirty waiting to be unleashed on the poolside beds on our last day, a little tip there is an extensive garden area to the rear of the concert room take your sundbeds if you can get some where very few venture ( secret garden )

Room Tip: look elsewhere

Can we say at the outset that this is a 3 star hotel and a very good one. It is not advertised as a 4 star hotel. People who say it is not up to the usual standard for a 4 star Hotel are best ignored. We, like many retired people are well travelled and you get what you pay for at the end of the day. This hotel is very good value for money. We stayed at the Hotel Platja Dor for one week from 19th July, 2012 and were more than pleased. First holiday we have had at an Adults Only hotel and it was bliss. We have grandchildren ourselves but not all children and teenagers are well behaved. Large proportion of guests were 30 years and upwards. Consequently, no blaring music around the pool and elsewhere. Staff very friendly. Two helpful English receptionists at the front desk. Rooms very clean and comfortable.Cleaned and towels changed every day. Nice balcony with table and chairs. Plenty of sunbeds around the pool and on the lawned areas if you want a quiet read. Food very good. Dining room supervised by the Maitre D - Rafael, who ensured tables were cleared quickly and food on the buffet was replaced as soon as the trays were empty. Pity that some of the Brits, young and old, ignored the notices asking guests to wear long trousers in the dining room for dinner, arriving in shorts and vests showing off their ghastly tattoos. They just don't get it that some people find this offensive. Its enough to put you off your food, Perhaps they can't read. Other nationalities comply with the request and don't find it a problem. The hotel was full and the staff coped very well. Bar staff were excellent, no queues for drinks. Entertainment in the evening was mediocre except for the excellent Ancona group of four tenors from South Africa who were superb. We bought their CD and have played it several times since our return. Three minutes walk to the superb beach opposite the hotel through the pine trees. White sand and beautiful blue sea. The water was warm, very shallow and safe for swimming. The hotel is not in the centre of Alcudia but just along the bay. Regular buses pass the front of the hotel every 15 minutes if you want to explore further afield.
Speaking to other guests many return every year to this hotel which speaks for itself. Anyone thinking of travelling alone need have no worries, it is very friendly and welcoming. We shall certainly visit Hotel Platja Dor again.

Room Tip: You can request a room at the front which has a sea view but we were on the first floor at the back...

We have just got back yesterday from this holiday and before we went was a bit dubious of some of the reviews on here. Need not have worried, the hotel was great, the beds, towels, room tided every day. Very clean everywhere else. Meals there was a good choice , if there was something you didn't like or could not eat, there was a way round to choose something else on offer. Bar staff, waiters and head waiter very friendly also the lifeguard. My partner needed a grab bar for the bath and a step up , we was offered a change of room for the following day with a walk-in shower or to get some disabled aids, within 24 hours we had a grab bar fitted and a step. Just what he needed.
I can't understand why a lot of people in the hotel was moaning, they moaned about just everything, in fact one woman had a whole catalogue of complaints which in my opinon was totally unjustified. If you wanted all those things why didn't she go to a 5 star hotel and pay 5 star hotel prices.
Only criticism was the entertainment. The actual acts that was on stage were very good, i.e. the the tribute to Witney Huston, The 4 singers on sunday , the 70's rock group and the very funny act on thursday, taking off many celebrities. But the 2 girls from Germany, was something else, my partner has politely named them Mork and mindy. They were extreemly unprofessional, in fact worse than amatuer. From the first time on monday evening to daytime activities, to weds and friday evening. I have never seen a full room of an audience empty so quickly as on thursday evening after the very funny comedy act, it was like someone had shouted FIRE!
I personally had a loudspeaker planted behind my sunlounger one morning and was woken up after a restless night with a quiz.
Our suggestion for improving of this hotel would be to get rid of these 2 girls and the daytime activities which not many people seemed to be interested in as we are all adults and should be able to entertain/amuse ourselves during the day and put on professional acts in the evening. Apart from this I think the hotel is far better that a 5 star hotel that I have been to in the past.

Room Tip: although it didn't keep us awake , our room was right over the bar and outside sitting area, if...

Stayed here for 1 week 18th to 25th July.

I find some recent reviews weird to say the least, I am not sure I stayed in the same hotel.

This is definitely NOT a 4 star, 4 crown, 4 anything hotel. The furnishings in the public areas are in desperate need of updating. The building which is used as the entertainment room, the one that looks like a World War 2 bunker with windows, would look a lot better if it was painted. There is no waiter service anywhere, and as already been said many times no towels are supplied at the pool. All the drinks are cheap local brands, although you can pay extra for proprietary brands.
We never saw any management around ever! unless they were the gentlemen who seemed to be acting as receptionists.

There is a hotel requirement for men to wear trousers in the dining room, but many interpreted this as long shorts, plus I do not want to sit next to men ( some tables are very close together) wearing sleeveless vests with their arms covered in tattoos. Management should be policing this but nothing was ever done.

Rooms are ok if somewhat small and there is no drawer space, again, as said before beds are uncomfortably hard. The rooms that get the sun in the morning have a restricted view of the beach, through trees which are across the other side of a quiet cul de sac road but in some cases they overlook a building site The rooms overlooking the pool get the sun in the afternoon but we found it to be too hot to sit on the balcony before 7pm.Beyond the pool there is a very pretty high hedge but behind the hedge is a very noisy main road.
My choice would be beach side .

Yes, we are as bad as the Germans with regard to putting towels on sun beds, with the queue forming about 7.45am awaiting the maids finishing cleaning, but most days you could still find a bed in the garden if not by the pool, also there is ample outside seating both in the shade and the sun.

More than 90% of the guests were British but the ages were certainly not so senior as has been suggested, there was a good cross section from all age groups.

In the dining room the food varied in quality from average to good, the so called show cooking was merely a chef cooking either a meat or fish dish. There was sufficient choice to find something to suit most people. The menu was English. Many of the fish dishes were very good, as were some of the meat dishes, pasta not so good, an attempt at Paella was appalling – lukewarm, with little content apart from rice. Salads were pretty basic with little change each day. There was never any queuing, the room was a perfectly normal temperature, and there was no pushing in or any rudeness as has been suggested before. If you required a drink you helped yourself, both to soft drinks from a dispenser and also to wine and beer from a fridge. The staff were there purely to remove dirty plates from the table.

All drinks in the hotel were served from one bar by a very enthusiastic group of bar staff, whose ambition in life was to have no queues, No one had to wait more than a couple of minutes for a drink. It is a pity that they did not have a cocktail menu to offer, but they were quite happy to put whatever you wanted in the glass.

For us the big pluses were, no children and for whatever reason no animation team, although two young ladies arrived on our last day and made a half hearted attempt to get people in the pool for aerobics. They failed miserably!! To have no loud music was a wonderful.

The evening entertainment was mixed, one or two of the professional acts were very good, others were mediocre.

You may be surprised that overall we enjoyed our stay, the weather being a major factor, I would not want to be here if it rained.,
It was hot, the drinks were cold, there were no children, no animation team and I could read my book in peace and quiet. Would we go back ? Probably not
Why, one wonders, is it that the management never reply to these comments ?
Do they care what we think? I don’t think so

Finally Palma Airport is a nightmare. The staff are rude and unhelpful. The distances to walk are immense .The departure lounges have inadequate seating . If you have walking problems request assistance otherwise you may never make it !!

Just got back from a week at the Hotel and have to say that most of the reviews on here are very unjustified. The food was fantastic - cooked to perfection, good variety, plenty of choice and plenty of healthy options. If you can't find something you don't like in there, you aren't hungry - simple as that. The soup was amazing, do give it a try if you do decide to stay there. The restaurant staff were lovely- always smiling and doing their best to clear tables and keep everyone happy. The bar staff were great, very fast service and the queues went down fast. There's also a pool-side drinks dispenser by the pool if you fancy a soft drink which is also great. My room was very comfortable. On arrival, we went to our room and the first thing I did was touch the mattress, and it felt very hard- but once you're in and cuddled up it's not bad at all, I had no problems sleeping at all, I could have slept in all day. The corridor was quite loud on a couple of nights because my room was near the lift and people were coming up from the bar quite rowdy, mainly a certain group of German guests, but all was good apart from that. The sunbeds went quite fast in a morning due to people reserving them with towels so we only got to go round the pool twice during the week that we stayed there which was quite annoying, although they began to free up as the day went on but I'd just go down early to secure some sunbeds. The annoying thing is, people reserved them and then came down hours later when other people could have used them. The entertainment was putrid, not going to lie. We were offered a game of table tennis which was free to use anyway whenever we wanted by the pool and a game of darts which was also free to use by the pool whenever, which was embarrassing. The evening entertainment wasn't much better really, there was a show on every night as far as I know, only got chance to see two. One was a rock band which were rather good and the other was some guys dressed in a horse suit prancing about to cotton-eyed Joe and another guy thrusting his crotch to the audience in union jack boxers... it was cringe worthy. The Thomson reps seemed nice girls, they were always there when guests needed them. Great location too, just a 10 minute walk to the nearby shops and restaurants, literally a 30 second walk to the beach which was beautiful - that's where we went when there were no sunbeds available. You can take drinks from the bar in the hotel out onto the beach in plastic cups which is great and it's a great stretch of beach for a long walk. Taxis and frequent bus services operate just round the corner from the hotel which take you to the port or old town, both very cheap. The taxi fare costs near enough the same as bus fare if there's 4 or more of you which is obviously much more convenient than buses. Bus fare is about €1.50 per person and taxis to the port are about €6.50. If you're into fishing there's a huge lagoon only minutes away from the hotel teeming with fish. I also never heard the notorious 'barking dogs' and my room faced the beach where they are supposed to be so whether the owners have moved them indoors or not i'm not sure. All in all, a great holiday and I would recommend the hotel to anyone. Great staff, great rooms, great food and great value.
