“Good Time at Viva Tropic”
Reviewed 11 July 2012

Had a 10 night stay recently at the Viva Tropic in a one bed superior pool view apartment. Although quite small, the apartment was very clean and served its purpose. Pull out sofa bed not the most comfortable but we got by.
The comlex itself is great for kids, we had a 3 and a 7 year old and both had a ball. The pirate pool with all the slides was great. Beside that pool was a playground, with a bouncy castle and crazy golf course, so if needing a break from the pirate pool there was the answer.
The main pool was split into two, with a slope leading down to the deeper part of the pool at one end, and a step at the other. Entrtainment was provided daily at the pool by the superb entertainment crew the tropic employs.
Usual problem with towels occupying sunbeds first thing, and it's a shame the mgmt. do not do something about it even though they mention on their welcome sheet they do.
Entertainment at night for kids was good, check out the characters at http://www.bufoworld.com, however, the show advertised as the adults show, although good most nights was really for the older kids in your party as opposed to adults.
Location of the Tropic was brilliant with regards to going to the marina, and all the restaurants around it. Couple to note were Bodega Des Ports at the far side of the marina, and on the Alcudiamar pier itself a restaurant called Bistro Mar. Not the cheapest, but food very good.
Around the corner from the Viva Tropic on the main road, there was an Italian called Don Vito which we ate in a couple of nights and found to be very good (we only tried the pizza not pasta, but as pizza's go, couldn't complain). Did not eat in the Tropic itself.
Overall a great trip for the kids, and if the kids are happy then so are mammy and daddy :-) Would recommend to a family with young kids, but if in a one bed apartment, expect it to be small and compact.

Room Tip: We had a room in block 3 on the first floor overlooking the stage, which meant the kids could catch...

Just back from 10 days at the viva tropic as a family of four travelling with a 2 year old and 4 year old. We have mixed feelings about this hotel. On arrival, like other reviewers we had to wait over 2 hours for our room to be ready. This wasn't great having just travelled a long way and with two young children not being able to get in our room and get changed etc. We had requested a ground floor apartment but were given a room very high up on 5th floor. This made me very nervous having young children that high up and the only other choice was a 3rd floor room but at a cost of 100 euros as had a pool view. Opted for the 5th floor as we felt we had already paid a premium for the hotel as it was. Spent the holiday quite nervous being so high. Room was fine size wise but bed situation was poor. Twin beds for myself and husband, real disappointment, asked for double bed but were told no. Took turns with our 4 year old between uncomfortable hard twin beds or even more uncomfortable sofa bed or prison bed as husband called it! Bathroom lovely. Beach nearby is stunning and perfect for little ones therefore totally relaxing for us parents as could let them go out for quite some distance on their own as it's so shallow. Lovely. Hotel pools were nice, pirate pool fab for kids, other pool ok but would have been better as a wade in pool better than a step down for the little ones. Nearly all guests were german which we didn't really mind but would have been nice if a few more English to chat to. No chavs at all though ;-) Didn't use kids club as we have never used as a family. But have to say the entertainment were absolutely lovely and genuinely caring with the kids during the kids evening show (which was such a hit with our two especially Katty the big pink cat!) Our two got up on stage one night dressed as Moogs and had a lovely time! However the staff in the restaurant were totally different and at times quite grumpy and unfriendly towards the kids which you don't expect in Majorca as they are usually quite the opposite. A word of warning, I was quite ill with food poisoning (from a salad eaten at the a la carte restaurant on site) and had to call doctor out at a cost of 100 euros. When I didn't get better, my husband rang to ask to speak to the doctor and before we knew it he had arrived at the room again even though we hadn't asked for a visit, this time a cost of 120 euros! We felt he made out I worse than I was and there was an element of scare mongering going on as he then said I had to go to hospital! Due to our two little ones we decided against his 'advice' and I went on to get better the next couple days. When my husband went to pay the doctors bill down at reception, he said there were plenty of other bills there too... And the following evening we heard a very upset mother crying saying the doctor had said she must take her ill baby to hospital. Made us wonder... All in all some good points, some not so. A great location and a fabulous beach but would not go back to this hotel.

I'm just back from a week's stay at Viva Tropic. Our party had 2 rooms, 1 bedroom apartment and a studio. The apartment was nice and roomy, bathroom was nice, although there was a sewage smell that we were very aware of, but after telling reception it was dealt with that day. The studio was compact but manageable. My only criticism was that one of the beds in the studio had ripped sheets and for a supposedly 4 star hotel we thought this was unacceptable. Oh another disappointment was the TV channels, all geared for German visitors, no kids channels.

However all in all it's a very nice hotel. Great pools, clean, we didn't get a chance to try the restaurant in the hotel as they didn't start serving until 6.30pm for evening meals and we had a hungry 2 year old always ready for something to eat at 6! A little on the expensive side compared to other hotels we’ve stayed in with the same quality/standard, but all in all really pleased with the hotel and would probably go back.
Friendly staff (most of them), supermarket staff were lovely and the fresh baked smell of bread in the morning was very inviting. Supermarket a little on the pricy side for water, but only a few minutes walk to another supermarket for cheaper, but very convenient having the supermarket onsite.

The restaurants we did try out with the hotel were all nice, however the service/quality food from the Brunel Inn (just a 5 minute walk from hotel) was excellent. Totally recommend a visit to the Brunel Inn whilst you are in Alcudia. John is a hoot, my 2 year old thought he was ace especially when he got his lolly pop at the end of his meals! Em is a fantastic cook, nice home cooked food and you know you’re getting the good stuff you can taste the difference in quality compared to other restaurants we tried. Will definitely be paying a visit to Brunel when we go back in September.

We have just got back from a weeks holiday at the viva tropic hotel port alcudia. (22-29 june).Overall we had a great time but a few things made it less than perfect. We booked the holiday with thomas cook and we will not be using them ever again. We had a 6.30am flight but were delayed and did not fly until 8.45am. The excuse was due to staff issues and the pilot had done too many hours so had to be replaced!!!!-not a problem with the plane which would have been acceptable. On boarding , all of the passengers were bussed over to the aeroplane steps at the same time and left waiting on the ground to board. It was absolutely pouring with rain and very cold so 10 mins later everybody was soaked wet through! Really bad organisation! Our flight was ok and when we landed it was 26 degrees in palma. The bus transfer was ok as the air conditioning worked well. The transfer time was an hour as our hotel was first drop off. On entering the hotel the reception area was lovely- bright and modern with leather sofas, huge palm plants etc. We were travelling as a family of five and had requested two one bedroom apartments with pool view on self catering basis. When checking in we were told that one of the rooms was of better standard than the other and we were puzzled by this comment. When asked why we were told it was all down to availability. On entering the rooms i can see why the comment was made. Our room was fine. It was spacious and spotlessly clean, good air conditioning and lots of wardrobe space. The bathroom was lovely- marble tiled throughout with a huge walk in shower with a waterfall head. The bedroom was of adequate size for three beds which was ideal for us(husband, wife and 7 year old son). However on opening the curtains we discovered we were at the back of the hotel, directly above the hotel supermarket and reception area. Our view was of the surrounding estate- no pool view. Our parents were in the room next door. On entering their room i have to say that i was shocked. Their view was in fact an enormous tree which blocked the entire viewing space on the balcony. The room was dark as the natural daylight was struggling to get through!(see photo). Their room was spotlessly clean but the decor was dated , the bedroom was a lot smaller and the bathroom had a shower over the bath. They were angry and upset with this room. I have to say that we payed a lot of money to stay here and chose this hotel after staying in the viva palmanova last year. When my parents went back down to reception to complain they were told that nothing could be done as these were the rooms that had been requested!!! My father even offered to pay more for a better room but was told "NO, as then somebody else will have to stay in your room and the hotel is full anyway". I thought that this was disgusting and i have to say that the attitudes from all staff members on the reception desk was appauling. They really didnt care. The room numbers by the way were 1120 and 1118. So dont stay in these rooms. After a few conversations with other hotel guests i think that maybe all the self catering rooms are on the back of the hotel. Thomas cook do not inform you of this when you book your holiday. You think that you will be getting a pool view and the price you pay certainly reflects this. We all feel ripped off! My mother has health issues and cannot walk far and sitting on the hotel balcony, relaxing is a major part of her holiday. She was unable to do this as it was so dark and gloomy in her room. My parents therefore spent the entire holiday away from the hotel. They also stayed at the viva palmanova last year and swear they will never stay at a viva hotel again. Myself, my husband and our son had a great holiday as we do not spend time on the balcony. We spent our mornings on the beach, which was wonderfull. The sand was soft, powdery and white. The shallow sea was warm, calm and crystal clear. We ate lunch in various beach restaurants in the port area. The port area was lovely. The afternoons we spent in the hotel pools. The pools are very clean and the hotel grounds are immaculate. There are lots of activities for kids. The main attraction is the pirate ship pool. There are numerous sports to play and mini golf. There is also a kids club which we never use. The entertainment at night is very poor and geared up for german people. The hotel was full of germans anyway. We ate out every night and the restaurants in the area were great. We went to the 'carabella steak house', 'dakota tex mex' and a chinese right on the beach front. There is a bar called 'Brunel inn' just around the corner from our hotel. It is run by a british couple(john and em) from Brisol. The food is fantastic here and the banter even better. They made our stay most enjoyable. My parents spent a lot of time in here. We did a day trip to puerto pollenca which was really lovely. We would like to stay there one year. We also went to cap de formentor. This is right at the top of the mountains. It is really beautifull and offers views to die for. We went in a taxi from pollenca and it cost 45 euros for a return journey(3 of us). The roads leading up were a bit scary but the taxi driver drove very safely and was very friendly.
Overall we had a great holiday. Our room situation didnt spoil it for us as we were out all of the time. However, we had paid for a pool view and were not able to move.My parents had a good holiday as they were also out all of the time. We didnt spend any money at all in the hotel on principle. We ate out all of the time and used the local supermarkets for any provisions needed. My parents room was terrible and i feel that it should not be used for guests-maybe as a storage room! My parents paid the same price as us for the holiday. I feel they should have paid less. After staying at the viva palmanova last year we were looking forward to coming to this hotel. However i cannot believe the difference in standards. This is all down to the 'dont care' attitudes of the staff who were very rude and unhelpfull. We would not stay in this hotel again because of this. This is a shame as the actual hotel is lovely. I welcome a reply from the viva hotel team.

Room Tip: Rooms above the reception area and hotel supermarket are on the opposite side to the pool. Some have...

Just back from Viva Tropic, Alcudia. First time in Alcudia. A great place for families and couples also as there is very nice over 18's pool which is a Spa pool with Jacuzzis and very comfortable sun loungers. The hotel boasts a very impressive reception and the staff are courteous and helpful, they even supply you with a little map of the surrounding area which was a great help. The hotel has its own supermarket which is very convenient for lunch things and the newspaper. Although, pay a visit to Eroski (about 5 minute walk) as it is a proper supermarket with very reasonably priced foods and has excellent choice. There is also a gym and an indoor pool. Our room was a studio which had twin beds pushed together, a table and chairs, kitchenette and fantastic modern bathroom with walk in shower. We had a couple of problems in the bathroom with the shower but the technician was very quick to resolve this after we reported it. As we were self catering, we didn't eat in the hotel but they do have an extensive and reasonably priced menu for the snack bar. The grounds of the hotel are very well kept and maintained. The A/C in the room is a must as it was 30 degrees plus when we were there. The A/C has 3 settings which I found helpful for during the night. There seemed to be very few british travellers at this hotel, mostly Scandanavian. Location to the beach is about a 5 minute walk and there are an abundance of shops i.e Spar, around the area. Also restaurants/bars within 5 mins walk. Car hire is also available through the hotel and is quite reasonably priced. Viva Tropic is an excellent hotel with excellent facilities and in a very good location. Would highly recommend it and would stay again.

We are just back from a two week break at the Viva Tropic Hotel port Alcudia. Overall we had a great stay with a few little niggles, but no where is perfect I suppose.

On Arrival 12. 30 in the afternoon we were informed our room was not ready. This was ok as it was so early and we were immediately offered a , ourtesy room for our luggage which was very secure. However we did not get into our room until nearly 5pm, which really ruined our first day(We had specifically booked an early morning flight so we would not miss a full day of holidays travelling).

The reception area is extremely bright and modern, with lovely relaxing furniture and plants around it. A very nice first impression. This is also where the internet terminals are available and quite reasonable priced at 2 euro for 24 mins use .. The hotel supermarket is also here so handy to use. The shop was expensive with some items and reasonable for others. Water is double the price. 2 mins to any of the shops and water was 99 cent for 5 litre as opposed to 2 euro on hotel supermarket. They baked lovely fresh rolls each morning which was handy if like us you were self catering. Check in was quick and the manager toni had our garden apartment that we had requested before we arrived available. It was in an excellent location to the pool.

The hotel grounds are kept immaculate and the two main pools were great. There is table tennis free of charge and pool table which
is 2 euro a game. There were plenty of sunbeds available, and we never joined in the usual morning rush mainly due to the fact that we had our own sunbeds and umberella

We were in block 2 on ground level/garden apt. The location of this was just so perfect(Room 2006). Turn left when you come out and you are at the main pool area restaurant and games area. Turn right out of apt and 20 seconds to kids club, crazy golf and kids pool with playground beside it.

We stayed in viva majorca village last year , and would have to say that the beds this year were far more comfortable , although the bedroom was way smaller. The door hit off the end of the beds it was so close. Thought storage was poor as well with no dressing table which I missed. TV was huge let down. No channels for the kids!! Handy when getting ready to go out or for mid afternoon break from sun. We were self catering so the kitchen while small was sufficient for our needs. Had kettle toaster and microwave. We really only needed breakfast as we ate out at night. There was a great walk in shower which was very powerful. Top marks for bathroom , but viva village had a great set up last year with two sinks outside of bathroom which was handy when everyone was trying to get ready at same time. All in all I would have to say that the apt was great but maybe a bit on the small side. The best part of my holiday was having our own sunbeds and umberella right outside with our own garden. Fantastic as I used to get up before the rest of the gang for a peaceful rest or read of a book. Also great to dry off after a swim in the pool , or relaxing glas of wine before our nightly trip into town.

The kids facilities here were fantastic. My eight year old loved the freedom he had here. As a big football fanatic he adored the multi sports court where he played organised footaball at 4 pm every day. The pitch was in a great location as we could see it from the pirate pool here our four year old spent hours every day, if we werent on the beach! We did nt use the kids club for the four year old as it did not seem as secure as last years holiday where you had to sign the kids in and out. This year the kids just joined in casually as they wanted. Although this did not suit with my four yr old, it was actually perfect for the eight yr old as he joined whatever activity he wanted at any given time. We played crazy golf most days as well. THE PIRATE POOL. Wow this was such a godsend. Its perfect for kids up to the age of about 11 I would say. BIg water slides and a bucket that tipped over every couple of mins. The kids and the adults alike could have hrs of fun here with the family. We certainly loved it. It is located as I said next to sports court, and playground with bouncy castle , trampoline etc was icing on the cake. There is an over 18 s relaxation pool here but we only got to use it once each.

The location of the hotel is about a five min walk to the beach. The beach is beautiful, with lovely soft white sand with shallow water, so very safe for swimming. There are little beach restaurants dotted every couple of hundred yards on the beach, which were handy for a drink or ice cream for kids, but beware these are very expensive.

Shopping wise if you are self catering there are loads of places. The Eroski supermarket is a little under ten mins walk from hotel. Turn right when leaving hotel and keep walking you cant miss it. 5 mins beyond this is the big roundabout with Lidl and burger king situated here. Ten more mins and you are in the new town or strip / Bellevue area as it is known. Loads of restaurants, and places to eat, but we found it very commercial, and our choice would by far be the other end of town in the actual port area(Turn left instead of right out of hotel). We loved the port(but this of course is subjective and depending on what you like on holiday) area. The beach had lovely playground which blended perfectly with the prom, and there was bunjee trampline and lots of stuff for the kids. The restaurants here were far more upmarket(reflected in the price as a result) but they were lovely. We ate tex mex , chinese , and Indian, and all meals were of high standard. There is a fantastic bridge built over the prom here, where there are fantastic view of the marina and the fantastic leisure boats and Yachts that are moored here.

To sum up we loved our holiday , and Alcudia will hold a special place for us in our memories

The Hotel tropic, while we loved the accomodation , was definitely geared towards germans. We never stayed for entertainment as a result. We tried the dinner in the restaurant , and maybe we just picked a bad night , but it did nt suit us at all. The manager on the door, was like a bouncer, in case someone managed to sneak in and grab a free meal...!! WE thought the choice very poor and unlike last year where you served urself beer and wine, you had to give your order to waiter this year. Overall a very stuffy atmosphere, no holiday feel. The food quality was fine so no complaints there, but we did nt visit again.

Restaurants that we ate in included: The Brunel inn for brekkie great. The Kasmir indian, and a must do visit is Carabela(but get there early as it packs up quicly)

A visit to pirate show a must. Also we took a pony and cart down to the port(just for photo opportunity) and the kids loved it.

All in all another lovely holiday in Alcudia.

Room Tip: The garde n room(2006) well worth the extra 210 euro for own sun beds and umberellas

I stayed here in June 2012 with my mother and sister. Altough we didnt have any small children with us, we would definitely recommend it for families that do. The hotel itself was beautiful, rooms were very comfortable and modern (a particularly comfortable bed). The staff were fun and friendly. It was mostly Nordic families with a few British and Irish too. 5 minutes walk from the lovely beach. We would recommend going half-board as it was great value, with a great selection for breakfast and dinner.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a pool view.
