“Was like a family run hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2014 via mobile

We arrived on Christmas Day and lest New Year's Day , the staff was extremely friendly and kind, we got a room for a family of five but it was opposite the restraunt in the annex and found cockroaches in the bathroom from the food storage but the food was excellent and it was like a Michelin star buffet , fantastic place for children except the kids club was run by a Germanic company so wasn't welcomed for English children ( bit bad really) the pool was lovely and the entertainment at night varied , only €6.50 in to corralejo but €1.40 pp on bus. Really worth the trip

Having stayed in Riu Hotels before we were slightly disappointed as this is like a poor relation - clean and tidy but needing a little TLC. The location is wonderful and contrary to some of the reviews the food is acceptable and plentiful. The in house entertainment left a lot to be desired as it was mostly very badly mimed - however the twice weekly entertainment brought in was excellent.

We stayed @ this hotel between the 4th of December 2013 to the 11th of December 2013. Yes the hotel decor is a little tired in places but the cleanliness, staff, food & bar service is exceptional. I've stayed in a few Riu's now & you get what you pay for. I've paid more for the one in Lanzarote which I didn't think was as good as this one food & drink wise but the one in Lanzarote is in a better location.

I will be returning at the same time next year if the price is the same for a week away in the sunshine you carn't go wrong.

Room Tip: To make the most of the sun you need to be in a room that looks over the pool

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2013

We stayed at this hotel dec 11th 2013 to dec 25th 2013

Transfer time 30 mins

Checked in at reception & told to go to restaurant while they sorted out rooms, there is only 1 reception area for hotel & annexe so gets very busy at times

As we are Riu diamond card holders we were upgraded to a suite (foc) on the top floor
Large bathroom, large bedroom & large sitting room with a sofa which would convert to a double bed
Bedroom & sitting both opened onto balcony which had magnificent views to the north to Riu tres isles, isle of lobos & lanzarote on fine days, but no sun at all on balcony, got 2 bottles of champagne, chocs, plant & sweets as welcome gifts

Hotel is built at right angles to the sea so north facing rooms get no sun at all south facing rooms overlook the pool & get whatever sun there is

We were nearly at end of corridor - suite 745 other suite on our floor was 742 opposite us - there were 2 single rooms right at the end (between the 2 suites) which had full sea views, the rooms looked quite spacious 744 & 743, so there was no passing traffic, nice & quiet - I would imagine that rooms on other floors would be numbered the same but not completely sure

Rooms on 7th floor – south overlooking the pool area, sun all day 712 – 743 – North facing rooms 701 -711 & 744 – 759- lifts are in the middle of the long corridor so quietest rooms are at ends of corridors ie 743 & 744 and 711 & 712 – rooms nearest lifts could be noisy ie 701 / 727 / 728 / 759 - rooms run in numerical order
I would suggest for quietest rooms ask for a high floor numbers 728 to 759 as these are furthest away from the terraced area which apparently is very noisy late at night, it was bad enough when we were there as friends were right above it & asked to be moved and I would imagine it will be noisier during the warmer weather as only the smokers sat outside while we were there, email the hotel before you go with any requests

Wifi at left of reception area where reps desks & info boards are also a small library with very few English books – check on thurs & Sundays after uk flights go on weds & sats – lots of people using electronic equipment so very noisy most of the time with people shouting into their equipment

Restaurants buffet – open sitting at hotel & annexe – you can use either – drinks on tap including water, no problems getting tables

WATER – this hotel is encouraging guests to reuse their empty water bottles & refilling them at the water taps provided as an effort to save the environment so they do NOT provide bottled water, it is available in the shop near reception for 1.5 euros for 1.5 ltres – I refilled my bottle for a couple of days & then realised how silly that was as people are drinking directly out of their bottles & then insert the water nozzle inside their bottle & transmit any germs they might have to everyone else refilling their bottles – even the waitresses fill their water jugs from these taps so I would advise everyone NOT TO REFILL YOUR BOTTLES OR GET WATER WITH YOUR MEAL FROM THE WAITRESSES, the reason I am saying this is because on day 5 of my holiday I was really ill with a flu type of bug, I didn’t leave my suite for 2 days & then only for short periods of time, I contracted this horrendous cough & sat up on sofa for 3 nights as it was so bad, have been to docs on return from holiday to be told I have a chest infection & if it doesn’t clear after the antibiotics have finished he will send me for a chest xray, he also gave me an inhaler in the hope that this might help with my problem but am writing this on dec 10th and still have this dreadful cough – the only good thing is that I have lost 7 LBS

Speciality restaurants – hotel canarian – mon, tues, weds – 2 sittings 6pm & 8pm – book day before from 8am at reception, annexe asian thurs. fri, sat 2 sittings – menus on reception counter (I was ill night we were going to canarian) – hubby went all still buffet – he had entrecote steak – 1 piece great the other like shoe leather

Pool bars open at 10 30am at hotel & annexe - continental breakfast & some hot food till noon then more hot food & salads drinks - on tap soft, tea, coffee, wines, beers & juices plus a bar for other drinks hotel pool bar closes at 5 30pm but pool bar at annexe is open until 10 30pm

There are also soft drinks, coffee, tea etc available on covered sun terrace outside the show lounge (no smoking), there is a bar but not open at this time of year, I would imagine it will be pleasant to sit there when weather is warmer

ANNEXE – the only entertainment is on a thurs 9 30pm karaoke (room numbers are 4 digits) most people come into hotel at night
HOTEL entertainment – most nights shows in the show lounge & 4 nights live music in the small bar through the card room behind a curtain, this is the only place to sit reasonably quietly at night when there is only piped music, the 4 nights when there is live music it is taken over by the germans & is very very loud

Hotel Pool area, sunbeds canvas always some available & parasols, also a sandy area beyond the pool with fixed palm parasols, pool towels provided some pathetic, most sheltered place to sunbathe to the right of the towel hut, take some strong clothes pegs to stop your towel from blowing away 4 per sunbed
Annexe pool area looked very busy, & not many spare sunbeds & lot of children

Weather – not too good, gales & sand storms when we arrived, ferries were cancelled for 3 days before we went, still gale force winds & sand storms for our 1st 2 days then wind dropped a bit but still windy & not much sun, the weather was totally inconsistent throughout our 2 week stay, you never knew what it would be like from 1 day to the next – only had 5 decent days, 3 days ok (cloud & sun) the rest were very poor

Wheelchair access – there are lots of stairs within the hotel due to the different levels throughout
Lifts in reception area to all rooms & down to -1 level – main restaurant & speciality restaurant, no lift access to pool area or main bar & show lounge although there is a stair lift to main bar & show lounge, to access the hotel pool area you would have to go out the main entrance down the ramp go down the path towards the beach & get to the pool area from there, the pool bar does have a ramp to it

Staff – couldn’t fault any of them they were all sooooooo helpful

Guests – our first week quite a lot of guests – not many children – our second week lots more guests & LOTS of children, I think the hotel & annexe must have been nearly 100% full so would not go as late as we did – probably a week earlier

Corralejo – 5 kms – taxi outside hotel 6E, bus stop 7 min walk 1.40E – share a taxi
Seemed a nice place lots of shops, bars, restaurants nice harbour area

Trips didn’t do any because of weather

Medicines – TAKE ALL YOU NEED AS SHOPS & SUPERMARKETS DON’T SELL ANY MEDICATIONS - you have to go to pharmacy in Corralejo

Doctor – 60E for a consultation – need to go to Corralejo for any medication prescribed

Flight outbound only 2/3rds full lots of empty seats. Inbound even better only 36 passengers in total so off plane quickly & luggage waiting for us – landed 6pm at home 7pm including 25 mins taxi ride

Contact me if any queries

We have just arrived back from Christmas at the RIU and I really can't fault the place.

We arrived and were put in the annexe building (I really can't understand why people complain about the walk to the hotel on here! It takes about 2 minutes!). Our room was huge had a lovely balcony and a long path up to our door. We ended up taking our balcony chairs to the front door as we got the sun there everyday. We also alternated using the annexe resteraunt and the hotel resteraunt but found the annexe one was much quieter.

The food in general was fantastic! Loads of choice and very tasty. The mandarin food was probably some of the best I have had in an al a carte but they do not serve it to you it is still a buffet. There ate chefs cooking in front of you.

The entertainment in the day was a winner and despite the fact we were normally the only English people the team always spoke English, German and French. The evening entertainment was also pretty good.

Dan the Thompson rep was an absolute legend and really helped us out when we needed him.

The only thing I would mention as a negative is that we always go away at Christmas and the Gala dinner and celebrations have always been on Christmas Eve. Therefore, we booked to go home on Christmas Day but at this hotel the celebrations are on the evening of Christmas Day so we missed out a little. My advice go home Boxing Day!

A great trip!

Back again for a week of relaxation, which is exactly what we got.Great views, great rooms friendly staff, fab weather, exciting waves, just paradise. My one and only gripe would be that the food could be improved on, otherwise this place gets my vote everytime, which is exactly why we keep returning.

Room Tip: If you can choose sea/swimming pool view
